England Discussion

Think the trio in the middle should function better tonight than with Mount, who lacks creativity, in the forward role.

No idea why he won’t play Foden centrally though. I would prefer him behind Kane and genuine pace (Saka and Rashford) either side.

Foden could then go either way. Feel he’s wasted in a wider role unless he’s given licence to roam a la David Silva

There was no need to add Henderson in the middle. Bellingham and Rice would have been fine with Foden ahead. Then Saka on the right. But Southgate doesn’t want to play Foden in the centre.

His own manager at club level has said Foden isn’t quite ready to play in midfield. Unless you mean as a 10 behind the strikers?

It has nothing to do with that. Foden excels in free role. If you want him as a 10 then he wouldn’t be able to play with Bellingham if Southgate wants Jude as a B2B for the sake of team balance and being vulnerable on the counter.

So do you play to individual strengths or select best 11 no matter what? Either way I don’t believe 4-3-3 suits this team, we have already shoehorned Mount to CM with terrible results. The 11 he has picked are not exactly the quickest and that’s a concern really.

It's a very workmanlike middle three, should give us a solid base and plenty of running but it lacks creativity.

Rice sitting with Bellingham and Henderson playing further forward should produce a good high press though think we will see a lot of long balls to moore from Wales, we will have to be alive to that but it might suit us.

Yeah I’d play him as a 10 with license to roam and link things up.

If Mount was to play he would be more useful as a 6 next to Rice. B2B etc.

Rice can easily do the holding job against Wales whilst Bellingham doing the box to box role leaving Foden as the 10. Of course you may have to amend against tougher opponents but against Wales it should be a no brainier.

Could Mount not be a decent B2B 6? Paired with Rice

Exactly this. It’s Wales FFS! We should be playing positive from the start not inviting pressure.

Yes as a 10 behind Kane. You might have to change for France but against Wales he could play there.

Yeah that could work. Wales are likely to sit back. His creativity could be key to winning the game. Kane needs to try and stay in the box more though. He’s roaming way too much, almost getting in the way of other players in their areas of the pitch.

Diamond midfield with foden at the top of it would have been good to see with kane and rashford as a partnership

Kanes a fantastic player but him liking to play as a false 9 does create issues in that hole.

I guess that’s why Spurs don’t have any creative 10s

Don’t dislike that team. Henderson in for Mount rather than Bellingham is less concerning and probably is more reflective of a team we might play in later rounds.

Mount is pretty much an English Oscar. He is better as a pressing 10. Even though he believes he is an 8 which is quite laughable. He is just horribly out of form, last season his goals return wasn’t bad for a team that was so shite. 1 in 3 for goals and assists in the league which was better than Foden the media darling in a better team.

Obviously it might not work against the big teams, but England look so much better when pressing higher.

Better than the golden generation in terms of team balance IMO

Surely Rashford has to start the Ro16 game? Should get through as long as they approach it like they are the bigger and better team. The problem comes when Southgate starts getting scared.

As a non English fan I think it’s due to the fall in quality of international football that bluffs this a little.
The Golden generation (for a time) could have had Owen as a 9, Rooney as a 10. Carrick and Scholes in midfield. Beckham right, Cole lb, Rio and Terry CBs, Neville RB. Hargreaves’s was a sensational CDM for a while but was never quite integrated into the side.
That’s incredible balance but was badly mismanaged.
Even then I think this team is off through the middle. Rice and Jude haven’t quite clicked and England have a Kane problem. It’s not as balanced as it’s made out

It's not his club position, I'm happy with him in the left.

Rashford surely has to start v Senegal? Sterling is a favourite of Southgate but surely he can’t possibly leave Rashford after tonight?

Midfield plays too slowly and will struggle to break down the better teams.

100% mismanaged, but also as you said "could have had" Sven managed to push Scholes out on the left trying to have Lampard and Gerrard in the center.

Scholes could control a game and he should have been first pick, maybe Gerrard and Scholes with a CDM behind them would have been the best.

When Scholes retired in after Euro 2004 I think it was, England just dropped off for me.

This team just has a better balance for me and before the tournament I thought "England, no chance under Southgate" but honestly I can see a semi final at least.

Scholes could control a game if the players with him were willing to play in a way to allow it. England at the time had Beckham, then latterly Gerrard pinging the ball 60 yards every second pass turning Scholes into a guy chasing scraps. Total, dumb waste because of a lack of strong leadership in controlling Beckham.

I doubt they're beating France if both reach the quarterfinals.
