England Cricket 2016 - Sri Lanka & Pakistan

Looks a very ordinary Srilanka side, especially the batting. I'd have thought this would be a great chance for the batting to pile on the runs. Even 250 odd would put great pressure on them I reckon.

Not watching the game. Who's this Shanaka guy? Spinner?

Seam bowling all-rounder.

Bowling like a true county cricket pro, mid-70s little bit of nip here and there, reasonably accurate, rewarded by getting the ball in the right areas with some very poor shots.

Losing your captain, vice captain and anchor before lunch and scoring a total of 16 runs (all from the bat of Cook) to a guy on debut is very poor

Still not sold on Hales, looks like easy food for top class fast-bowlers in this format of the game.

Turned into a decent little session for England that. If we can get to 270 odd its probably our day having lost the toss.

Really smart batting from YJB, batting far out of his crease and trying to play the ball late.

Still think 250 should be decent. Got a reasonable chance of getting that, now, unless we lose a couple of wickets early on. Then we're reliant on Broad - who's either David Gower or Phil Tufnell, depending on the day, Finn - who can't bat and is only above Anderson because he at least actually tries to... and then Jimmy - who can bat a little but refuses to, because trying to reverse sweep every ball is more fun.

What do people think about Eranga's action? That elbow looks a little suspect to me.

Took a little longer than expected. But thats an absolutely ridiculous shot.

Such a peculiar innings, until Bairstow came in he'd scored 80% of his runs in boundaries, something ridiculous like 40 runs off 10 boundaries and 10 runs off the other 110 balls. I don't think the focus on guys like Hales and Compton etc. is doing them any favours, such a huge contrast to the clarity that guys like Bairstow, Stokes and Root play with.

Have any England players actually been got out and not just played varying degrees of bad shots?

Compton, possibly, but thats it.

You have to consider the mitigating factors to be fair that he saw England slide from 49-0 to 80-5 and shut up shot, which is fair enough.

But regardless of that I think that, ironically, this knock raises more questions that it answers. Is he really better around the off-stump or do Sri Lanka just have less ability to exploit it than South Africa did? If he's not going to get a move on with it does he really the temperament of someone like Sam Robson to grind away without doing something daft? Does he actually trust his game enough to play in the way that got him into the side in Test cricket?

Pleased for Hales & Bairstow. Decent recovery from England, should end up with a competitive total now on that pitch.

England need to learn how to play safe after a wicket has gone, twice this innings 1 wicket has quickly turned into 3

Steven Finn with the 3rd highest score of the innings with 17.

This is a very good score given the position we got ourselves in.

Just opened this thread to moan about Broad opening rather than Finn. Switched tab to watch the next ball and Broad nicks one off.

Be back in five to moan about Anderson opening...

Very nice to get Mathews in this early.

BBC card has Herath to come in at eight. Are they really that light on batting?

Also, just realised Bairstow has three catches already. He'll be enjoying his day.

Gee when Broad gets his line and length right, few better things to watch in test cricket.

If we stay on for the rest of today I don't think Sri Lanka will survive it. Horrible conditions to bat in at the moment.

EDIT - *sigh*.

Really stupid not to review that. He's their best batsman by a country mile.

Shocking from Matthews. You're covering your off stump, chances are the impact is outside when it strikes you on the front foot.

That ball to Shanaka was an absolute joke.

Only thing that can save you there is not being good enough to get anywhere near it.

Its out, give it out, don't go upstairs for obvious decisions, and stop fecking around with 400 replays.

This will be over by tea tomorrow. Sri Lanka are shit. England should've batted again so we at least get another day of cricket

I don't think there's many teams anymore that can deal with the ball moving around like that sadly.
