England Cricket 2016 - Sri Lanka & Pakistan

Have we seen the best and worst night watchmen in test history in this match?

One thing to be said, the respect between both teams is great. Pakistan players congratulating Joe Root was a nice touch.

probably all chucked a load of money on him to get a double ton.

They've got some great team spirit. It's good to see...

Would be better if they could catch, though.

:lol::rolleyes:

Misbah will probably get a spirit of Cricket award next year. Runs this team well

Disappointing test as a competition considering the last match, but England have been clinical. I'd expect us to wrap this early on the 4th. Maybe tomorrow if we chose to follow on.

I think the only way we see a competitive test between these two is if Pakistan bat first and get 300+.

Went yesterday, what a perfect day too. Weather and for England in general.

England have had a v good start with 2 wickets this morning 1 for both Anderson and Broad

Unless something miraculous happens, this is a lost test match for us. Second innings, the middle order really has to do something to give us some confidence going forward.

120-8 by lunch.

 ffs!

As a Pakistan fan I'm disgusted by this performance. As a Warwickshire fan, I'm really happy for Woakes. He's finally showing consistency at the top level, been a great summer for him so far.

70-3 by tea :wenger:

I'd bat again for a few reasons. Firstly you don't need to score many more to put this game beyond anyone. Then you've managed to avoid Yasir in the fourth innings if by some miracle Pakistan get in front.

Most importantly though you're putting even more miles into the Pakistan bowlers legs who have already bowled a lot - and Yasir has been absolutely flogged - whilst ours sit with their feet up for a bit. Considering Anderson and Stokes have only just come back in that's probably more important than realised.

Lead of nearly 400 runs and England don't enforce the follow on. I guess they really want the likes of Hales, Vince and Ballance to play another knock - hope they don't live to regret the decision, they are still losing the series as things stand.

Good points though if I was Pakistan and it looked like headway wasn't being made I'd start bowling the part-timers

Double edged sword though, really, because even with all the tricks in the book England will make quicker progress towards their total with those bowlers bowling and i'm not sure Pakistan (bowlers aside maybe) want to be batting again.

Depends on the rain and of course at that point, I would imagine Pakistan would have given up any hope of saving the test. It's all about giving their frontline bowlers a rest which defeats the purpose of exhausting the Pakistani bowlers further.

Honestly I can't get my head wrapped round of not enforcing the follow on. Lead of nearly 400 runs, 5 man attack, only bowled 60 overs, overcast conditions - makes no sense beyond just giving Vince and ilk a knockabout. Just seems an unnecessary risk.

If the rain can see out the rest of the day AND there are heavy showers tomorrow like how the BBC predicts, maybe we can see out a draw. Would still require a monumental batting effort, so not getting too optimistic here.

Let's hope Hales is just having a look and England's 'aggressive' opener isn't playing for his average here hey?

The feckers can do all the pushups they want but you can't teach a donkey to catch.

Bizarre to not enforce the follow on. Pakistan won't really care how many we get and will just be grateful they are not batting again.

If weather becomes an issue we can declare immediately. I think Cook has made this decision for two reasons a) middle order can get some runs under their belt under no pressure at all and b) work the Pakistan bowlers and fielders into the ground. They'll be mentally and physically exhausted.

Take into account the effect of scoreboard pressure, Pakistan will be feeling dead and buried and may only need half a day to bowl out. Overcast conditions will only help that.

Amir's about the only player who can come out of this game with some credit.

There's a week's gap between this game & Edgbaston, plenty of time for both sides to recover physically but it will be the mental exhaustion that will be an issue for Pakistan.

Barring a miracle, we're going to lose this but someone needs to make a stand in the second innings.

Come to think of it, Vince should've come in instead of Root. Don't think Root or Cook will gain anything from batting here.

Have Pakistan got an all-rounder that they could bring in? I know that may weaken the already vulnerable batting further but it's a lot of overs for the 3 pace-men, regardless of Yasir bowling so much, in comparison to England who have so many bowling options. I guess the other option is that Hafeez will have to bowl a reasonable amount if his ban is overturned.
