England at World Cup 2014

I think Barkley's best position is CM and not AM. It is better to have him driving through the opposition from deep, because that creates space for all other players in front of him and causes fear in the opposition. If you play him more advanced you don't have that driving force from midfield or the positive effects on the team it brings. If Rooney was playing bad and was dropped, it would be better to play Lallana as AM because he is better suited to that position. He lacks the dribbling ability of Barkley but he creates more and scores more. The dynamic and balance is better with Barkley CM and Lallana AM.

I'm taking bets from anyone who wants to place one on England winning the world cup. 20 Cafites seems to think they will.

Is this the last major tournament for the likes of Gerrard/Lampard? Hopefully it is...
Yes. Lampard is going to play in New York, and unless Gerrard does a Pirlo, which he wont, and still wants to play for England, which he wont, then this is his last Major tournament.

And even if he did drop deeper and show his qualities in other ways, England wouldn't know what to do with him.

So yes, this is it.

Rogers will turn him into a center back so he can make the next WC and extend his career into his 40s.

England Lineup v Italy

Hart
Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines
Henderson Wilshere
Sterling Barkley Welbeck
Sturridge

Best lineup (no injuries)

Hart
Johnson Jagielka Cahill Baines
Henderson Wilshere
Oxlade-Chamberlain Barkley Sterling
Sturridge
I was just thinking this. With Henderson, Wilshere and Barkley in midfield, you have 3 players who can pass, who are mobile, who can tackle, and who have stamina. 3 good all-rounders instead of 3 role players. Ox and Sterling provide thew width and pace and creativity on the flanks. The only question is can Sturridge lead the line by himself because I would have it as a 4-3-3 instead of Barkley off the front.

that's cracking banter mate, go have a celebratory wank.

@OllieHolt22: Sterling the stand-out in England training again today. He's got to be in the side against Italy. Form + sheer ability demand his inclusion

Scholes should have played at this world cup.

Does Sterling play in the #10 role often? I've always assumed he plays on the left or the right but I've been reading Rooney might be shunted out to the left to accommodate Sterling. I mean I've seen him down the middle on more occasions that one but I thought that was just due to him drifting inside and was more down to the movement and fluid system Liverpool have had drilled into them under Rodgers.

And now we're supposed to accept the opinion of Ollie fecking Holt? He's the most clueless gobshite in the country.

I see that the British Media have collectively decided that Sterling, Barkley and even "the Ox" should start ahead of either Rooney or Welbeck!

Watching Rooney in the friendlies was painful. Whatever he says, he is not fit enough to play, he was breathing out of his arse after about 20 minutes. He has lost 2-3 yards of pace - look what Barkley does now, very similar to a 23 year old Rooney, but unfortunately not a 28 year old one. He also couldn't trap a bag of cement in any of the games.....
As much as I like Rooney, its too much to expect he'll suddenly burst into life and I would start Barkley at 10. People say that Barkley loses the ball too much, but Rooney is even worse - his brain is 2 steps ahead of his body at the moment. If its not working you can always bring Rooney on after 60 minutes.

Despite the fact Italy and Uruguay have looked unspectacular in their recent friendlies as much as England, I still don't see England being able to overcome those two. I would still predict Italy to comfortably win 2-0 in the opening match and Uruguay will probably sneak it 1-0 or something. At best, I can only see England drawing one of those two opening matches. Quality just isn't there and there's far too many rotational players for me.

Hopefully we don't get some dreadfully disrespectful punditry on BBC/ITV prior to these matches, making England's opposition sound like a pub-team, as I'm still reeling from that nonsense prior to the Germany WC 2010 match.

I'd go for a midfield of Gerrard, Henderson and one of Barkley/Ox/Lallana, with Sturridge, Sterling and one of Welbeck/Rooney up front. If Rooney were match fit, it'd be an easy choice.

Pele questioned by English media and says something nice about England shocker.

With both the white Pele and the longsight Pele its ours to lose, with semis minimum target

Hodgson likes wide pace. I think this is the most likely front 6:

------Sturridge----------
------------Rooney------
Welbeck-------------Sterling
---Gerrard-Henderson--

STURRIDGE
OXLADE/LALLANA ROONEY STERLING
BARKLEY GERRARD
BAINES CAHILL SMALLING JOHNSON
HART

If we play 4-2-3-1 that is the best option.

I'll be shocked if it's anything other than that against England.

Beeb saying Welbeck limped off at training and may be a doubt against Italy.

We don't need anyone to man-mark Pirlo. In the Euros, it was Montolivo that kept getting Balotelli through on goal, not Pirlo, watch highlights if you don't believe me. Let Pirlo run the game, he will only be passing backwards and sideways. England will never have more possession than Italy anyway. At least with Montolivo out, Italy are less likely to break us down.

Sterling at 10 is a very wise move from Hodgson if he goes through with it. Will give Italy all sorts of problems.

Barkley should start for England
He really shouldn't. Gerrard and Wilshere(probably Henderson) and Lallana/Barkley as Cam. Left winger Sterling. Right wing Rooney and uptop Sturridge. Rooney and Sturridge changing around keeping defenders guessing. Thank God Hodgsons manager he is clueless but you'll make it through because of individual excellence of Wayne

Depends what his role against Italy was going to be. Rumours was that he was going to do a job on Pirlo, can't really expect Sterling to do that.
Man-marking is really pathetic. All it takes is one moment, one feck up etc

Sterling at no.10 behind Sturridge? Very inexperienced lineup as well as being prone to a bit of stupidity. Italy is a world class team. Pace wont affect them like it did the PL teams. Italy are experienced. They certainly wont leave huge spaces behind their midfield/defense for sterling and sturridge to exploit. And I doubt they would be as good or threatening in that case.
