Emre Can

I don't think he's very good but a loan til the end of the season for cover might be savvy, maybe with an option to buy if he does well.

I don't think we can turn him down if he fancies coming to us. That's how desperate we are and plus it's January so it's hard to get the top targets. But doesn't that show how far we've fallen that we're taking Liverpool's cast offs?

In fairness, when he left Liverpool he was definitely moving to a bigger club. They'd have had him stay if possible. That said, he wouldn't get into their current team.

He would improve our midfield options no end, however. He's proven he can do it in the league, and is in need of more regular football.

Sadly, given how we operate around transfers, I reckon this will end up being filed in the "makes too much sense to actually happen" file, alongside Bruno Fernandes.

This is a Glaston level post.
I've seen plenty of posters claim in full sincerity that McToMinay and Fred are as good, or better, than anything Liverpool have, as if midfield were not the major issue in your team's struggles.

Which is why I reckon anyone coming in and doing a better job than them would instantly be regarded as best in the league or close to it.

The potential upside with Can , besides being a decent to good upper half premiership midfielder, is that his ceiling is actually really high. If he gets all his shit together, he can be a top player. At 25, that could well happen at his next club.

This is different to your first post, but I agree with you.

He's not great but decent, and at 25 he's still have roam to improve. I won't mind getting him in. Will be a solid option there, not spectacular but solid, and of course better than having no body there.

For what its worth, he was the one leaving us. He turned down our contract offer to join Juventus. Was a step up at the time.

In Fabinho we've signed a significant upgrade, but I'd still say that Can is good enough that he would have been part of the midfield rotation here on fairly equal footing with the others if he had stayed.

He'll probably prefer to be a squad player at Juve though than come to us. No guarantee he starts for us every game when everyone is fit either.

I would take in a heart beat. Proven in the Premier League and as others have mentioned works well in a 2 man midfield which Ole seems to favour. If Juve wants to throw in a match fit Ramsey in for 6 months just as a nice thank you, would not be against that either.

I don’t really care that he played for Liverpool but I think he is just not a very good footballer.
Average but a good manager could use him to do a job.
Maybe a loan like some of you said.

I would welcome it very much. He probably needs a handfull of games to get up to speed, but I don't think it is realistic to find another player of similar level and in good match form in the January window.

He's an allround midfielder, and seems more suited to Solskjærs way of playing than Matic who is too static. I see a lot of similarities between Can and McTominay actually. Both have great physical attributes, has an eye for the odd goal, can contribute defensively. For what it is worth, Can has shown better technique and passing.

All considered, I think he's a very solid option in the difficult January market.

Not good enough for Liverpool. Not good enough for Juve. A massive step backwards if we get him. Way way overrated. I would rather we kept Fellaini than take this overpaid journeyman

Yes he is proven. As not good enough. A very average footballer

There is a serious level of delusion with regards to McTominay and Fred. Emre Can not our best midfielder? He walks in ahead of everybody apart from Pogba. As did/would Herrera, who has recently been a victim of the Caf’s rush to get excited over one or two half decent games.

It can’t be underestimated just how terrible our midfield options are at present. We’re in no position to snob away at players who have been playing regular football for Liverpool and Juventus for the best part of five seasons.

Although there is no guarantee that he is going to start for us if everyone is fit. It would be nice to having for cover for injuries even if it's only until the end of the season ans then but an upgrade in the summer.

Ramsey may be a good shout for the rest of the season if he can stay fit. Although he has 3 injuries already this season and when fit hasn't played many minutes, not sure if this is due to him trying to gain match fitness.

Ramsey is on huge wages and is always injured. Definitely don't want to go there.

He's decent, but he's not good enough to justify signing an ex-Liverpool player. I also don't like him and his injury record is not all that great. We've signed too many mediocre players because our alternatives were worse and I'd hate for us to go the same route again — he's not going to become a world-class midfielder, however talented he was when he was younger (although I'm not sure that he had it in him even at the very beginning). Maguire is the latest example — the arguments like "we need numbers" and "all of our options are worse" look silly right now.

We only have Fred and Matic fit.

I’d be all for it assuming we don’t get ripped off.

He’s a slow Liverpool reject. The kind of signing Liverpool used to make when they were failing to catch United.

I would rather see us keep & play Matic than sign a former Liverpool player. Hell, I'd wish Fellaini back on a Rooney-like contract before signing a former Liverpool player.

Is Rabiot getting games for Juventus? Why not him?

I'm afraid you need to accept potential world class players don't fancy us right now, at least not enough of them for it to be our only approach.

I'm sure we'll be a bit more pragmatic and sign the odd one to do a job so that we don't regress any further.

Oh the lovely revisionism. Liverpool signed him in 2014 summer, a season after they just about missed on title and United finished 7th. Also at that time, he was hailed as a great signing as a talented youngster.
Now I am not a big fan of Can and don't really care either way, but we are talking about January transfer window and United having only 2 fit CMs. We need bodies even if they are average/decent at best. In such case, loan is the best option. If we had Pogba and McT fit, there is no way we would have considered Can.

Well, we certainly attract a lot of players with great potential, even though the work permit is usually an issue with younger ones. I'm not talking about those who already broke through like Sancho, although we still have a chance with this one. I'm pretty sure that Haaland was an option for us, for example, and, if we're to believe the reports and (more so) the funny reaction from Raiola, we were the ones who pulled the plug on this one.

And also, Emre Can is not just below world class potential. He's a couple levels below and, considering the way that we "improve" all incoming players, I doubt that he'll suddenly become a great player for us. There are lots of players of his level around — and, even if the signing fee would be relatively low, he's earning 4 mil per year at Juventus & had some ridiculous signing on bonus as well, which is not really a "signing on" bonus, as it's spread throughout his years there, so we'd have to cover that as well. Is he worth it? Hell no.

Bar Pogba, every single CM we have is a cog in the wheel. We need some actual quality, imo.

But we don't have a lot of midfielders worthy of being the cog in a wheel. We need more players like Fred and McTominay who can put a shift in to control games and allow Rashford and Co. To flourish. Can fits that, and he isn't going to come in as a Pogba replacement. For a creative outlet we might need to wait until the summer, but to expand our midfield with more workers and better "engines", Can on a free is a very good starting point.

Ive been chuckling to myself those saying Freds been pretty good and speaking about signings as backup to Fred and Mctominay

He’s a pointless midfielder who’s not really good at anything in particular. Do we even have scouts?

He's a good player, would instantly be your best midfielder.

I'd predict that would make him overrated on here rather than reflect that your current midfielders aren't all that though.

He would not be our best midfielder. Fred, McTominay and Pogba are all better players. However, he would fit a spot that is much needed for added depth. I would rather call on Can to start a game than Matic...

Have you actually seen our last few games? Matic has been decent and still has something to offer as a squad player

Can hasn’t got the legs, and is slow, you’re really overrating him.

Biggest mistake of our club’s history was appointing Busby.
