This is probably controversial but for me he's the greatest polymath of our time, maybe even the biggest since da Vinci, I'm serious.
His companies and projects are so vastly different that it's unbelievable for me how a single person can have expertise in so many different fields. And it's not just his knowledge it's his attitude to just try everything he wants to try, no matter how unrealistic it may seem.
Just look at what he has done (of course not alone, and he didn't even found all of these companies, but he played a big, big part in all of them):
- He revolutionized the way we pay in the digital age with PayPal
- He built Tesla and started the whole e-mobility movement and revolutionized an industry with a number of established billion dollar companies that all laughed about Tesla in the beginning
- You want to go completely carbon neutral? Well let us put a few of our SolarCity collectors on your roof (of course you can charge the Tesla in your garage with it)
- The state funded NASA cuts it's missions because they are too expensive? Well let's just found a private company named Space X that provides them with reusable rockets and make their missions less expensive
- Let's ensure everyone in the world will have access to the internet in some years with our own Starlink satellites
And then there are some other projects that didn't really take off yet but could also be insane in the future:
- Hyperloop could bring a new age to tourism and maybe make short flights completely unneccessary (maybe The Boring Company will play a part in this to create tunnels faster and cheaper than ever before)
- Neuralink is one of the most promising companies and projects in the field of brain-computer-interfaces
After PayPal he could've just decided to live a fancy and relaxed life. He would never have had to work again ever (is this correct grammar? I'm starting to hear the voice of my mad english teacher in my head...).
But he decided to put all the money into creating Space X and Tesla.

PS: He was also the co-founder of OpenAI (essentially providing the money at the beginning, and hiring some people before leaving) which is one of the coolest AI companies right there.

He founded X.com, a company that offered online banking solutions. They later merged with Confinity, the company that made PayPal. After the merger, Musk was CEO for 6 months before getting the boot. So that's a no on that one.
He bought an electric car manufacturer, paid to be named a founder and then drove out the actual founders. But credit to him, he's helped popularize electric cars and made.

Well I said the he of course didn't do everything on his own.
I read the book about Musk by Ashlee Vance. Even those who wanted him kicked out of PayPal don't deny that he and X.com played an important part.
And maybe you should read the story how he presented two of his lead engineers a manual and plan on how they could build their own rockets at Space X after they failed to acquire some from Russia. The knowledge how to build those rockets and some parts as well as where and how to get them was completely self-taught. The engineers said they couldn't believe what he came up with.

I wanted to say (english is not my first language) that it's very hard to compare polymaths of today to those of some centuries ago.
During da Vincis time the field of applied math (mostly IT today) and physic wasn't nearly as broad as it is today.
So I'd argue that being a polymath was "easier" 500 years ago and that for me today it qualifies for being a polymath even if you're "only" an expert on multiple fields of math and physic.

Not sure that this is accurate. He seems that he worked during his studies to be able to fund them). But he started his first company without any money, and later his father funded the company by 20K which was 10% or so of the second funding round.

The company was sold for over 300M with Musk and his brother getting over 10% of it.
He is not an expert in them though, except having been a good coder (and even then, there is nothing to suggest that he was anything more than 'good', unlike for example someone like Bill Gates who was brilliant at it).
He is not an expert in hardware, space flights, rockets or various IT topics.
He is a brilliant entrepreneur and seems to have a great vision, and then push for great products and market them brilliantly. But it is not like he is the technical guru behind them.
It was a 50-50 merge between his company and Peter Thiel's company. Elon was originally the CEO, but got replaced in favor of Thiel half a year later.

I think the most unique thing was that he did this in different companies, but when it comes to diversity, Larry Page and Sergey Brin did that too. And unlike Elon, they really had a strong computer science background, to be considered real experts there.
Google (search engine), GMail (the email provider), Youtube (buying it but then further developing it, probably similar to Tesla for Elon), Google Chrome (top browser and dethroning Internet Explorer), Google cloud (one of top three cloud services), Google AI (by far the leading AI institution in the world), DeepMind (coolest AI institution in the world, though Google just bought and funded it), Waymo (leading autonomous driving company), Calico (one of the leading genetics companies) etc etc. Just that they are all under Alphabet, but the likes of Google search engine, GMail, Youtube, chrome, cloud would have been hundred billion companies on their own, as would likely be Google AI. Waymo would not been far off, considering that less developed autonomous driving companies like Argo AI, Cruise or Aurora are worth 10B or more.
And well, e-payments, electric cars and space rockets are different to each other, but so are emails, search engines, AI, autonomous cars or genetics.
