Eliaquim Mangala

Just shat myself momentarily when I saw that "Man City sign Malaga..." And misread it as Mangala.

What's happened to this guy anyway? Before the end of the season this lad was being rated amongst the best CBs around and had interest all over Europe. Really cooled off, maybe due to the fact he didn't feature at the WCs?

How do those who see him play in Portugal/for France rate him compared to say Varane?

Where did you read it? I can't find any confirmation of the deal. It's almost certain, I think, but not confirmed yet. I think it cooled off because football people possibly know he's City bound already. Which means quiet agent, quiet player, little to speculate with. Mind, I'm not sure he's bound, just think it very likely to be the case.

I don't think he's one of the best CBs around yet. Still a lot of ironing to do. He has some impressive things in his game, but still lacks that consistency that defines top CBs. He shares some of those David Luiz traits (too rash, too adventurous, and caught off-guard or with a brain fart too often) in a smaller scale. You expect him to improve with experience, but the chance he won't makes him not worth the £32m I have seen touted for City's bid, in my opinion. Luiz was also supposed to improve and become a beast with time, and he only got worse. I'm still confident Mangala will have a lot more success.

Can't compare him with Varane, I saw very little non-Porto football this season so must have seen Varane play 4 or 5 times and paid little attention to him.

If we indeed sell him for €40m and substitute him with a <10m Martins Indi, as it seems to be the case, I don't think we'll be complaining much.

I think Mangala has better potential than Martins Indi from what i've seen of both but that's good business tbh.

Mangala for 40 million euros is pretty good business. Not sure he is the best partner for Kompany either.

Thought he wanted to go to Chelsea and that was the hold up.

Not sure he's worth 40 million Euros from what i've seen, but we will see if this goes ahead.

Benatia - Kompany on paper in the short term atleast would have been a better partnership though Mangala is younger.

Goal.com claim the deal is wrapped up but then go on to say they've got Benatia lined up as insurance.....

I thought City had a limit on their net transfer spend this summer?

Limit is £49 million

So they've really only got one big signing in them, think it would be pretty unwise to go for a raw prospect in the Portuguese league over someone like Benatia. I've not really seen anything from Mangala to suggest he'd be an upgrade on Nastasic.

Unless they sell Negredo, but given Aguero's injury issues that would be pretty dumb. No chance of getting a decent return for Jovetic.

I said in the newbs he was going to City and got ostracised.

ITK vindication.

So they will have 2 world class CBs as we chase who? Hummels? I dont mind losing out on players if others are in the bag. Hmmm

This the same Mangala that couldn't get past Sakho to play for France at the World Cup...... I'm not overly worried.

We bought Herrera who couldnt get past a whole host of Spaniards......who flopped

What's your point? How exactly can you compare us signing a midfielder that couldn't get in a team ahead of Xavi/Iniesta/Fabregas/Koke for the current World Champions with the most settled squad at the tournament to City signing a defender that couldn't get ahead of Sakho in the French team?

Sakho is a very good defender. So is Koscielny.

Herrera can be whatever he wants, I know that. I'm merely saying commenting on who or why regarding world cup selections is madness. paul Scholes did nothing in an English shirt which was fitting of the player he was. he was shunted out onto the left. As a result you could say as he was playing for England before Erikson came. No matter how you rationalise it. Scholes as a player and no one else should be judged on the international front IMO....

Fine, my opinion of Magala as a defender is he has a lot to learn. He's physically superb, very strong and very quick for a centre half but seems a bit headless chicken-like at times, can be very good but sometimes appears to lose his head and charge out of position looking for the ball. If you can coach positional discipline into him he'll be a good defender, until then I won't worry.

That's why we shouldn't sign Mangala. Otherwise we spent our money for 3 risky players. And also Mangala is still in young age. We have 3 young talent centre back Smalling, Jones and Keane. What's the point buying another young one. I rather us stick with them or buy the experience one. Mangala is just a similar type of centre back with Smalling. Which I think very good centre back since I rate Smalling. But I won't worry too much for next season because Mangala is still lacking experience, and we know that Sakho and Kosc got their place ahead while Mangala is just 4th choice. Though he can learn from Kompany. And time will tell if he can develop into great centre back or no.

Relax no world class sit on the bench as a 4th choice French 2014 centre back.

You could be describing Jones there, neither are the finished article yet but both have alot of potential.

People overstate starting for their national team, if anything clubs prob prefer if a player isn't flying around the world mid season risking injury.

From what I saw of him last season he's not better than Nastasic. It could just be I saw his poorest matches or something, but I certainly wouldnt be comfortable with United paying that fee for him

Herrera had busquets, martinez, fabregas, xavi, alonso and iniesta ahead of him. Mangala has Sakho ahead of him who's looked nothing special. What a fecking stupid comparison that was.

People talk about Shaw being over-priced, but I don't see what has Mangala done to get that price tag. For 30m, City could have probably got Benatia which would have a been better fit.

A lot of stories that we matched their bid and offered him a better contract but he wanted Champions League, don't know whether to believe that or not but if its true then it's the story of our Summer.

I agree, exactly why I'm glad we aren't in for him like was rumoured a few months back.

According to most reports I've read Benatia was their second choice and would've cost them 5-10 mllions less than Mangala. I presume getting the latter means Benatia is no longer in their plans.

Roma have asked for €30 million plus the Serbian defender (whose price tag is around €15M, therefore a total of €45M). via Di Marzio

We need an experienced player rather than someone like Mangala. I have no doubt he will develop into a top player but you could say the same about Evans, Jones & Smalling.

At this moment in time, we need someone who is experienced and can be a leader. Someone who will walk straight into the team and make an impact, this is most likely why we are linked with Vermalean.

If that's true I'm not surprised they went for Mangala instead.
