Electricity off in all of Spain and parts of Portugal

Has anyone joked it's Real Madrid boycotting electricity over losing the copa final?

Apparently some Brit had to shout so loud because the thick Spanish waiter couldn't understand him that it caused an earthquake and knocked out the power.

Mes que un powercut

I live in the south of Spain and the electricity has just come back now. It was off between 12:30pm and 10:30pm. It's pretty shocking how difficult life is without electricity for just a few hours.

As previously mentioned all traffic lights were out so even crossing the road was like a game of frogger

Will be interesting to finally hear what has caused this.

Just imagine what a modern day Carrington event would do the world?

Quite worrying to think about it.

Florentino cutting the light so the committee doesn't sanction Rudiger so can play the rest of the league

REN said: “Due to extreme temperature variations in the interior of Spain, there were anomalous oscillations in the very high voltage lines (400 kV), a phenomenon known as ‘induced atmospheric vibration’. These oscillations caused synchronisation failures between the electrical systems, leading to successive disturbances across the interconnected European network.”

Really? Atmospheric vibration caused an outage in three countries?

It seems to be extremes of temperature - hot days and cold nights - stressing overhead power cables. Which is plausible. Weird it never happened before though.

EDIT: might just be temperature variations between different areas the cable is running over.

Apparently it's by design Pogue!

Engelaar said such a widespread failure was “extremely unusual”. However, there have been previous examples. In 2003 a problem with a hydroelectric power line between Italy and Switzerland caused a huge outage across Italy for about 12 hours. A 2006 German power overload caused outages as far away as Portugal and Morocco.

“Interconnection between countries is vital for sharing clean energy, but it also creates new pathways for failure to spread quickly,” Engelaar said.

However, Bruegel’s Zachmann said that interconnections also help to prevent problems from getting worse. The interconnector with France will make it “much easier to bring the electricity system back”. “Yes, problems spill over but at the same time the larger system acts as a buffer and prevents the crisis escalating,” he said.

feckin hell, only got power about an hour ago. I think this was the most boring day of my life.

It's a minor blip. couple of years ago I was without power for 3 days in 95F heat

I asume you live in a city? I am in the countryside and we only got power back at 4am. It was out for about 15 hours. Made for a chill day reading.

I had internet and electricity at work until 5 PM and the power came back at 10 PM so really the only difference from a normal day is that I ate dinner at the balcony to get some sunlight.

Absolutely terrible luck.

My mates wife is always giving out about how backwards Ireland is and how everything is better back home.

Usually I ask her why they can't drink the water from their taps, but this little episode will be very enjoyable for a while.

If you don't build any public transport, then nothing can go wrong.

Having a hard time believing this is some weather phenomenon

Obviously climate change is a thing and brings new different weather and extremes but in the world we live in right now it's just not what one finds most likely

If if was related to weather temperature, could they have seen it coming? I assume they have sensors and monitoring systems to follow temperature and how it could affect the grid.
