EFL Trophy 2023/24

90+5’

Another great play by Shoretire, Wheatley one-on-one with the keeper but slips just before he gets a chance to finish it.

Very impressed with how United have dealt with the physical side of the game tonight. Haven’t checked the second half but I believe we won the aerieal duels by 60/40 or something in the first half.

Stockport don’t deserve anything from this game and United very much did deserve all three points.

FT

SCFC 1(3)-1(5) United

McNeill + (top bins)
SCFC +

Shoretire + (dirty panenka)
SCFC +

Nolan + (same left top corner as McNeill)
SCFC - (Harrison saves with a dive to his left)

Williams + (low right corner)
SCFC +

Wheatley + (low right corner

Quality pens all around. Well done to Wheatley who missed one just a few days ago at the Otten Cup.

Still bitter about that ending but in terms of experience and development, this is not bad either.

Very much the better team in the second half, controlled it well and we were solid defensively. Equaliser with more or less the last kick of the game. Dealing with that and executing five brilliant penalties, well done boys.

How did Big Willy do?

A bit clumsy and uncomfortable in possession, especially in the first half. Bad touches, hesitant on the ball etc.

But a much better second half, him and Aljofree dealt with their strikers very well. Kambwala played a big part in the attack that led to our penalty.

It feels like he has the tools to be better and more proactive on the ball as you see glimpses of it every now and then. Perhaps being away from playing for so long has taken its toll.

You would have to imagine that being out for year(s) at such a crucial time of a players development would have a massive impact on his career.

Sucks, man. Injuries are the worst.

Awful result but sadly not suprising. Our defence is bad enough against PL2 teams, so an almost full-strength top L1 side was never going to end well.

Thankfully they played reserve strikers.

Player ratings from the match. Maxi Oyedele played well but the overall performance was so lazy. Players afraid to put a tackle in and couldn’t be bothered to run. It was just so easy at times for Bolton. Defensively we’re a shambles and it’s becoming a major concern at u21s level.

Aye, we'll be heading for some record goals conceded at that level if we're not careful.

Guess this helps explain why we went with the Evans/Reguillon loan deals instead of a short term promotion for one of the U21 defenders…
We've really struggled producing quality defenders for a very long time at youth level. Full back we've not been too bad at, Williams and Fernandez are decent enough and I still believe Laird would be a first-teamer if not for injuries. CBs is a different story though. 19 conceded in 6 games, 17 conceded in the last 3 is very concerning.

The injuries comment could be applied to Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi. Both have had big injuries in the very early stages of their career which would have hampered their development. They were pretty much nailed on in being first team squad players (Axel especially) at a point in time.

Can't understand why Mainoo is starting. He should be playing tomorrow

That has completely shattered any glimpse of excitement I had about tomorrow's game. He should be getting an hour tomorrow, ahead of potentially 90 mins at Fulham.
Yeah, was hopeful he’d be given the opportunity to grab a spot in the team. Hopefully he’ll just play 45 mins tonight and be on the bench tomorrow

He barely had a pre season before getting injured, you need to temper your expectations.

The likes of Casemiro, Mount and Mejbri will be getting minutes tomorrow.

1-0 United. Header was spilled from a corner- Kobbie lays it off and Shoretire curls in the opener

Mainoo is playing a weird left midfield position and then floating inside. He looks so classy whenever he gets on the ball though and just received the ball under pressure and pivoted beautifully to set up an attack. Never seen McT do that

1-1 against the run of play. Player ran through without challenge and smashed it in from 25 yards

2-1 Salford. Another cracker running through unchallenged from midfield and picking his spot. Shocking defensively from United (par for the course this season for the U21’s)

Mainoo still on, no way he will play tomorrow. really disappointed

What in the feck is that penalty decision. Utd down 4-3 in 94th minute

Agree, some management of expectations needed on here.No chance ETH would chance a young, inexperienced partially fit player.

appreciate the enthusiasm for youth but potential and youthful enthusiasm are not enough at Premier league level never mind UCL. Similar clamour for Garnacho previously who is nowhere near the required level still. Good impact player yes, regular starter no, long term world class player, I’m not convinced, yet he was put on a pedestal after a couple of substitute appearances.

patience required

Absolutely no reason why he couldn't have played 45 mins tomorrow night.
