Edinson Cavani - SIGNED for United

We are Manchester United , we shouldn`t be taking chances in the final hours of a transfer window.

We are not the Manchester United of 7 years ago - so i'll still take him even though it's a panic buy and a risk.
Let's not think we're still the same.

To be frank, Cavani as a squad option is miles better than Ighalo, it adds depth and quality. If Giroud works for Chelsea, why shouldn’t Edinson for us?

Agree with this. He is a far better option than Ighalo.

I think if we had already signed Sancho and Telles, people would have a different attitude towards this signing.

Will be nice to bring him off the bench when teams are sat back, as we often run out of ideas.

10 million Euros in agent fees. What the feck? Why would anyone pay this much?

He‘s a better option than Ighalo. Since he‘s not gonna be tied to us for too long, he‘s also not gonna be much of a financial burden. Hence, it‘s a no-brainer in our current situation. Nonetheless, he fills far from our most pressing needs.

Great player, 10 years too late. Same as with Henrik and Zlatan. Will be a useful addition but will always leave us wishing we had them in their prime.

Looks like he got Ed's one thought right. Let's not pretend that. Cavani is a striker who likes to get on the end of crosses, gets in the box, good job we have lots of good wingers who can put crosses in. Oh wait......

We can’t just always blame Ed when the player we buy is not what you want. Was Ighalo Ed’s signing too? Maybe Maguire was Ed’s signing.

Though clubs like United or City can get away with signing someone like Cavani at this stage to an extent financially (more so than say Arsenal or Spurs), it is still not a good look for your recruitement department. But with United it is actually a signing you'd half expect them to make which says a lot about the way the club is run.

It is crazy how this club is run... Martin Edwards to Peter Kenyon to David Gill... to Dead Woodward.

The players rep actually trashed us in public as basically a money pit where he could get a pay day and is so unfit that he can't even make the squad for a world cup qualifer but this thread continues to cast him as the next zlatan that just needs to get on the treadmil for a couple of weeks

Which is where I believe the club have got it wrong this time. I believe people are waking up to the fact that this isn't just fun, games and memes anymore. We're actually ran by a bunch of amateurs, we're being ridiculed by our handling of transfers by other clubs in the media, and the general anger and frustration is generally being pointed at the boardroom rather than the manager finally. We won't improve until the asshats above the manager realises their limitations and hire professionals with the experience to handle running one of the largest sporting organisations in the world.
I believe people make stories up in their heads and run with it before even knowing what’s going on, things like massively made up fees or that nobody else wanted up and he’s been satin the settee eating donuts for 7 months. This place is a joke

Could there be a scenario where Cavani and his agent were asking for too much at the beginning of the window and now with no club agreeing to their terms, have now lowered their requests, making it more appealing to sign?

It might have happened. But if the decision to sign him is based on money alone, it's still a problem.

The one good thing to come from this window is that more and more United fans are coming over to the dark side and realising that we won't ever win a title while the Glazers own the club and while Woodward is running it for them

Read this back to yourself a few times and then realise that you've completely lost the point of what it is to be a supporter

48 hours left, all our potential deals are collapsing or not happening, free transfer, big-ish name and woodward wants a name on the teamsheet that sends a shiver down the spines of the opponents.
What was Woodward meant to say, opposition would laugh when they see the name? It was just a figure of speech that was. You’re like a dog with a bone with that and the national manager ffs

We arent paying this. The reason its gone through so late is that the agent and player have relaxed their demands

For a player and the club, everything has to be right. Money, of course, like in any walk of life, is a big contributing factor. So it has to be correct for all parties.

And unlike in other years, we all know why Cavani is coming here. He's not come to be the main man or anything of that ilk. He has come to be a great option in the squad for us. So people need understand, it's unlike previous big signings we've made.

Pretty good signing in my opinion. Would have loved him at Bayern as Lewy backup.

Can I introduce you to Ed Woodward? It's another Falcao signing. He loves them.

I've never been so disappointed and annoyed by a signing before. They've pissed around all summer trying to knock Dortmund for 20-30m for a player who should be pivotal to this team for the next 10 years. Then in the last days they panic buy a 33 (nearly 34) year old striker with a poor recent injury record. If he were cheap as chips I wouldn't mind, but the reported agents fees and salary are outrageous when they could have been put towards Sancho.

I just can't get my head around the logic in so many of our transfers since Woodward took over. You'd assume someone gets to his poisiton by knowing more than the average fan, but his signings have proved to be shite over and over again.

I hope I'm proven wrong but I doubt it.

Once again, people are being negative for the sake of it. Some of you are complaining about the details of the deal, of which you don’t even know. Even if the wages are high, there’s no transfer fee and it’s just for two seasons where he’ll be a reliable backup striker, who will be able to guide the younger lads like Martial, Marcus and Mason on the do’s and dont’s of striking. I mean, we have Ighalo there now. Clearing Pereira and Smalling’s (soon) wages covers at least 60% of it too.

Also, RvP said this guy should be our top target. If you all think you know more than RvP about strikers, just shut up. Ed’s a twat and I’m all for criticising him for things he gets wrong, like overspending and seemingly messing up the Sancho and Telles deals, but I’m not criticising him for this. Cavani will come in, be an impact sub in games where we need a goal or to rest Martial and play in the cups where he’ll score some goals simply because of his poacher’s instinct. This is a win-win transfer.

On a final note, honestly, to the people saying things like ‘sick of this club’ or ‘brutal club, hate it’ just because you don’t agree with a transfer with minimal risk, piss off you overdramatic idiots, rather than giving useless, crybaby comments like those. MUFC and the Caf would be a better place without people like you. I’m sorry, but it’s true. Using words like ‘sick’ and ‘hate’ about United? Go off to Liverpool or Leeds or something! After all, they’re far better run than us, and you hate us anyway, so it’s fine!

Apologies for the rant in the last paragraph, but I’ve had to say it for hours.
Yes I agree, spoilt fans these days talk shit and they don’t even know what they’re on about, just like sticking the boot in and thinking they know

But the "price" of getting him so late is that we may be getting a very rusty player. I don't think he has played for about seven months, and even prior to that he didn't play much for a while because of injury. If money dictated that, it's still an issue.

To be fair, I don't believe money was that big a factor. Our desperation is.

I’m not for this transfer but in fairness, most are praising Chelsea for the Thiago Silva signing and I struggle to see much of a difference.

We are Manchester United , we shouldn`t be taking chances in the final hours of a transfer window.

That ship has sailed pal. We're Manchester United, a team that hasnt won a single trophy for 3 years, finished in the top 4 just 3 times in the last 7 years. That's the reality!

Yup, from 200k /week to 250k, to 300k+ in the space of just a few pages.

The caf ladies and gentlemen.
 Point that out and you just get a ‘whatever 50k or 500k it don’t matter‘.

when someone’s mind is made up it’s made I suppose and they live an exaggeration to prove their point.

Will be this seasons Felliani signing as he'll be the scapegoat, the target of fans frustrations for everything that's gone wrong in this window.

If Juve were doing it, no one would bat an eye. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Or even Chelsea, just like they did with Silva which was apparently an amazing deal by them according to our fans, even though he is fecking 36.

Apparently, rumors say it is so that we can squeeze the salary and agent demands down. Don't know if true.
Apparently, we did learn, because the club seems to have managed to lower the demands of the player/agent. One of the tweets claims agent acknowledged the demands were lowered. Hence the 200K and within wage structure rumors.
With all other transfers in context, yeah it does look like a panic buy. But whether or not it is a panic buy, I don't think it is a shit deal. I think it is actually reasonable, with assumptions in place.

200k for a 33yr old bench option doesnt strike me as a good deal

He's spent his best years in a woeful league and is looking for one last big pay day.

The prem is an incredibly hard league to adjust too and at this stage in Cavani's career im struggling to see it being an overwhelming success.

1 day of the window left and this is seriously the best option we got to bolster our attack? Woodward has outdone himself here. Truly shambolic.

This signing highlights how inept our board are and how the people who run this club have no ambition to make us a title challenging team

We are the biggest joke in world football right now

That ship has sailed pal. We're Manchester United, a team that hasnt won a single trophy for 3 years, finished in the top 4 just 3 times in the last 7 years. That's the reality!
Yes but the reason for that is because we have a transfer structure that results in us making signings like this the day before deadline day. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.

But the "price" of getting him so late is that we may be getting a very rusty player. I don't think he has played for about seven months, and even prior to that he didn't play much for a while because of injury. If money dictated that, it's still an issue.

To be fair, I don't believe money was that big a factor. Our desperation is.

Well we have a 2 week window where he will be training with a group of players. There's videos of him training whilst not playing competitive football. So he's not just been lounging all day. The medical will tell us his physical condition.

Desperation? Maybe. But it also could it be timing? Like I've said previously, we've only managed to start getting players off the wage bill. So timing is now perfect for such a deal.

One of the most irrational transfers in our history.

Our idiot CEO spends months pissing around on a player who we need desperately to fill a position for the next decade and become world class. The price of Sancho reflects our need and long term benefit. But Ed just fecks around for the entire transfer window.

Then he goes and spends a fair chunk of that money on a crock who represents zero future planning, including bunging an agent a significant amount.

Ed is an absolute and utter arsehole

If Juve were doing it, no one would bat an eye. I'm cautiously optimistic.
Difference is Juve have won their league 10 times in a row. We're trying to close the gap between ourselves and City/Liverpool and this transfer window is apparently our answer to that.

Anyway, there is a thread in the newbies called "players who excelled in their 30's" by @steve.crowford . Let's hope we can add Cavani to the list soon.
