Film Dune

I was going through those a bit the other day, and I did find people saying that Part 2 takes a bit of a sledgehammer approach compared to the more subtle tones of Part 1, so it's not unanimous. But yeah, I'm also really looking forward to this. Apparently, the film also ends a bit open-ended, setting the state for a third film based on the second Dune book - which Villeneuve has already said he would love to film, to make this a trilogy.

Yep, he says he wants to make three films in total by adapting Dune Messiah next. As that takes place 12 years after the events at the end of Dune, he says he is going to wait a few years to do it.

I did read a couple of negative reviews, but there are always some. The vast bulk I read were mouth frothingly effusive in their praise for it.

Seems like I‘m one of the few that found the first one quite dull.

They've marketed the shit out of this, so I'm intrigued how well this does at the box office.

So did I.

If I found the first dull will I not like the second?
I'm not a huge fan if the first but I think it did a great job of putting down the foundation for the series to lift off now.
I'm expecting this sequel to be far more involved and exciting for general audiences.

That was my issue. Too much foundation building not enough plot.

Think of it as a set up/foundation for the second part of the story. They ramp up the adrenaline tenfolds in the second one.

It's right up there with Fury Road as one of the most visually stunning/impressive movies I've ever seen, and they balance everything perfectly. Not one scene feels like filler.

Probably my favorite cinema experience ever.

Wow big call! Okay I’m sold.

It was a bit slow, so if you don't like that aspect of Villeneuve's work, I get that Pt 1 didn't excite you too much. Pt 2 is supposed to be much more action though, from what I've read. A rather different overall tone.

Yeah, 100% positive isn't going to happen anyway!

Honestly can‘t remember much of it, sure pretty shots and high production values but I‘m one of the few that actually likes Lynch‘s version - at least most of it - and thought for example the Harkonnen were depicted very tame in the new version and I adore their portrayal by Lynch. Also the set design felt far more progressive in the old movie. Dunno, wasn‘t a fan of Villeneuves Bladerunner movie too.

Aesthetically I prefer Lynch's film too, also love Jodorowsky's visual take.
Kinda funny though the neither Lynch or Jodorowsky read the actual book, not to completion anyway. So, from a visual and narrative perspective, Denis's version is far more in keeping with Herbert's book ( because Denis actually read it).

It's a long time since I've seen it, but I think I mostly thought it was rather awkward, especially the whispered voiceovers. It's been ages though, I might be misremembering by now.

Awkward sounds about right. I have a sweet spot for the cast, props and overall atmosphere and its overall unique style - but it has many flaws obviously and Lynch distanced himself from it not for no reason. But in comparison the new version looks like a streamlined, no risk approach which made it a bit soulless and dull in my opinion. Glad you guys like it though.

Legendary Pictures have bought the rights. Too early to say what they're going to do with them, hopefully a big budget TV series or a few films.

I love the original books (the prequels by his son read like bad fan-fic and are an utter disgrace).

Any other Dune fans?
I made this thread on 2016. Time flies!

I think these movies are about as good as they could've been.

Now, where's my big budget adaptation of Iain M Banks Culture novels?

And for all your other threads, it's been downhill since then. Or should I say... downdune?
I was just going to say 'downdune' and now I see the white text.

Well.

But I still wanted to have this thought reflect poorly on me in public, so I'm posting this anyway.

Just watched it. I'm closer to a 10/10 than to a 9/10.

I have no idea if I have breached or moved in the last 30 minutes or hour. What a masterpiece.

Judging by the reviews so far, this will be Villeneuve’s Dark Knight and it will propel him to that top echelon of directors where droves of people will be hyped for whatever movie you’ve got coming out.

Amazon had the rights but I think the estate backed out of it in the end, which, judging by their LotR series, I'm thankful for.

I enjoyed the first one without being blown away, as flawed as the Lynch version was it captured the weirdness much better. Villeneuve is great at the epic spectacle stuff, though.

What did people really see in the first one? Seems to me that people are just jumping on the hype train.
After all the posts in this thread explaining why people thought the first one was great, I think it's justified to ask: why didn't you see anything in it?

Just saw dune 2. Was really looking forward so maybe had too high expectations.

I enjoyed it but not TDK level enjoyment. Will watch it again and maybe will take in more.

I hope it cleans up and more of these too quality sci fi movies are made.

I just saw it, it was fantastic. However, I did feel

The stakes weren’t that high, everything seemed a bit too easy, especially the final army showdown. Although my heart was racing at the final duel. And for some reason I thought part 2 was the last one.

I didnt like the first one at all. But Part 2 was surprisingly good. It all felt a bit rushed at some points. Kinda like a 8/10 movie. I never read the books so I'm not sure if it's faithfull.
