Teamtalk....

United are ready to make another move in the transfer market after landing England defender Rio Ferdinand for £30m, according to reports.

Last week Sir Alex Ferguson revealed his summer plans were to sign two top players and speculation is mounting that the Reds chief is ready to close in on his second target.

The identity of the next player on Ferguson's shopping list remains a mystery but Blackburn's Damien Duff is being mentioned in some quarters.

Blackburn have insisted they have received no offers for Duff, despite Rovers manager Graeme Souness' claim that Liverpool have made an enquiry.

Souness, however, has admitted that the player could be sold if a "ridiculous" offer came in for his services.

He said: "We have had a telephone call from Liverpool asking if Damien was available. The answer was 'no'.

"But if the price was right we would not be in a position to turn a ridiculous offer down."
United will face stiff opposition from Liverpool if they launch a bid to wrench the Republic of Ireland star away from Ewood Park but Ferguson holds the trump card. Rovers want United striker Dwight Yorke but are unwilling to match the £6m asking price but with Duff valued at around £20m, a cash-plus-Yorke deal might be in the offing.

Source?

The whole Duff business is quite intriguing as some sites claim he's a Liverpool supporter, while others mentioned his United alliance.
We all know well he can play on the left, right or in that famous 'hole', but is he that versatile?

i think duff is going to be a big star, wherever he ends up.

current scuttlebutt seems to confirm that he was a boyhood manc fan but would be unhappy being behind giggs and beckham in the queue at your place. . .he'd be more likely to get more starts with us.

I'm sure he'd jump at the chance of joining you....especially since he supports us. ;)

Duff cannot be let go to the Bindippers for two distinct reasons;

1. And it makes me wanna vomit saying this, but Longballpool might turn into an exciting and very pacy team. <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

2. Alternatively they will wreck the little gem with their perculiar brand of anti-football. <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

12 million and Yorke to burn the dippers off

we could use another player up front or in "the hole"...however is duff really correctly valued at 20 million pounds?

boyhood allegiances mean nothing IMO unless youre brought up the area of 'your team' eg. Nevilles & gerard for pool who im sure wouldnt go across to the 'enemy' For all other players though, money and playing opportunities count.
Take Ole for example, a liverpool fan as a kid, but not brought up in Liverpool so therefor probably didnt know what it meant as a die-hard pool fan to sign for United

errrm, my point from the above waffling is, Duff will go to whoever gives him most playing time & most money. That is if BB sell.

If Liverpool get Duff and play him as a left winger then they would have a formidable left side with him and Riise.

Personally, however, I think we are in a strong position to sign him. It's gone very quiet on the Duff front and Yorke as been dropping major hints that he will be on his way soon to Blackburn. Utd have the perfect opportunity to do a player + cash (approx. £12 million) deal. It was clear from Fergie's comments, that they were interested in a few players pre-world Cup but that the tournament didn't do them any favours because they performed well and drove their value up, that Duff was one of those.

I think Utd have said to Blackburn wait until the Rio deal is done then we'll negotiate. Having said that, with the Bowyer deal off, Liverpool will be pushing hard.

We're obviously in contact with Blackburn already about Yorke's valuation. It's just a matter of time before Kenyon floats the idea of a player plus cash move. The fact that we've only spent 14 on Rio for this year is another good sign that we could get a player in Duff's valuation range.

we've already floated the player + cash deal to blackburn i think, £12M + nick barmby equating to £17M. they'd have barmby as a direct replacement for duff, and they're safe in the knowledge that you lot want shut of yorke anyway. . .

Souness is on record as wanting Yorke. Has he said the same of Barmby ? I can't imagine anyone coveting him.

nah, but he's a bloody useful player is barmby. and souey likes his ex-'pool players as much as he likes his ex-mancs. . .

;)

Float away. I can imagine what dirties will float. <img src="graemlins/houllier.gif" border="0" alt="[Houllier]" />

to MOM and raoul

do you really think hes a 10mil+ player?

like AEBM said i want the ice man more

i think in the current market, duff's realistic value is £10M-£12M. . .but since blackburn don't really want to sell him, it's going to take a bit more than that to prise him away.

he's young, quick, direct, skilful, doesn't require a work permit, and i think that he's going to be a very big star personally. . . .

We have an ice man in ole. Can we have adifferent type of player?

He would be well worth that fee when you consider he's a rising star, versatile, pacy, and like Rio - he'd be a fixture for us for the better part of a decade.

As for Eidur, I'm warming up to the idea of signing him...but I think its just wishful thinking of a few on this board. I haven't heard any sort of press link.

even if we sign him ;)

Why doe we need a full-back. Is this we "need a full-back" talk (and it's usually touted as left sided F/B) been generated by the supposed R. Carlos link?

G. Neville is solid and the best english R/B in the country (we missed him in the W/C). Silvestre is, potential world class material in a few seasons.

Wes Brown is excellent cover for Gaz (remember he broke into the Utd team in that position - earned rave reviews and got an England call up. Sven and Tord have publicly gone on record as saying that they see his best position as R/B.)

P. Neville is a solid if unspectacular player who provides decent cover. His recent comments suggest he is hungrier and more determined than ever this season to cement a 1st team place. While I would not stand in his way if he wanted to leave for more football, I think Amir's comments in the thread "Phil Neville should he go..." that when he played regularly it was during Utd's best unbeaten run should be considered.

The only way I can see the need for a L/B is if Sivestre refuses a new contract. In which case, he will be sold and the funds put towards a replacement.

The problem area in defence last season was the C/B position and the lack of a stable partnership.

Well, if we go for Duff can we please make it a big less of a saga than Rio?

I can't take much more of Ferdinand-like business. <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

LOL. Someone on Teamtalk radio just said that Duff would be quite upset at being called a Liverpool fan, as he supports United. <img src="graemlins/keano.gif" border="0" alt="[Keano]" />

can't be bothed to explain it all again

you can see my last post about a need for a full back <a href="http://forum.redcafe.net/forum/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001009" target="_blank">here</a>

Personally I'm starting to disbelieve any and all of this talk linking us with Duff. Liverpool are clearly after him and very much need him but it doesn't make sense for us to sign him. We already have Giggs although yes we need decent cover for him, surely not at the price Duff will cost us?

Spend it on another defender and maybe a goalkeeper I say.....oh and get Rivaldo for free to replace Yorke! ;)

Souness interview on sky sports news
Im confident Duff will play for us this season and probably next. If rio is worth 30 million then duff must be somewhere near that value and will only leave for a stupid amount of money

The more you think about Duff the more he looks like a top United player. Sign him now.

ps. All that bollox about who a player supports is irrevalent. These are professionals. They've been given the opportunity to play at the highlest level and will give their all to their team - end of.

Frankly, All-Powerful No 1 :)

Do you think the Board will sanction another purchase? after spending 30mil for Rio?

Trouble is, most clubs probably think they can extort Rioesque money from us for their stars.

i would say rio was an exception because we were desprate for him

i really dont see us getting into a bidding war for duff, if somebody wants to pay over the odds for him let them but id say hes worth 10mil tops
