Dries Mertens | €28M release clause

Is it? How so? There was no expiry mentioned when he signed the contract 8 months ago (that's when the release clause was written in, cause he'd run his contract down) and this is the first summer transfer market since he signed it.

Any links that suggest the clause is no longer active?

I'm 99% sure he will be involved since Lukaku is already out. I don't think Martinez will change the entire front line and he'll probably want to give Hazard a rest too. I don't hink he'll play full 90', mind, but we'll see.
It's widely reported that Batshuayi will start up front and we have more than enough players to make up the two spots behind our striker but yeah, we'll find out soon enough!

Don't think he intends on leaving Napoli though, he's super happy there, adored, and his wife loves Italy as well. Can't see someone like Mertens changing that for Manchester in his 30s.

Fair enough. That seems legit, since that was the kick-off date for the WC. Which means Napoli were careful in making sure the clause is not still active if Mertens has a fire WC. Oh well.

I expect Batshuayi to start for Lukaku but I expect one of Mertens and Hazard to also start and the other to come on (maybe for the other). Belgium doesn't have that much depth up front. The only other player that can perhaps play in the front 3 is maybe Januzaj? The rest are really MFs and he'd have to change the formation the entire triplet (Lukukau, Mertens, Hazard) does not start.

I expect he'd want to keep KDB and Hazard fresh even more than Mertens.

Huge fan of him, absolutely love him as a player and wish we bought him before, but I would take him even now as a short-time solution. Shame about that clause because in the current market that is nothing for a player of his qualities despite his age.

So, if we weren't in before, zero chance of that happening now.

Leaving Napoli for 2-3 years to play in United on a more lucrative salary? Yeah, I think that part wouldn't be such a problem.

You should watch some documentaries which have recently aired about his life there, if that's what you think. Feck me I hate the "no player would reject United" attitude some on here have.

I didn't watch the documentaries, but it has nothing with "no player would reject United" attitude, I just think he would consider a chance to move to a big club for the last 2 or 3 years of his career. He can always come back to live there.

And he is also really close with Lukaku.

Most top players want to play in the best league in the world.

Got little to do with United, and mainly to do with £££.

Certain clubs in the world pay life changing amounts for players, especially moving from an Italian club. Which is crazy to think about since footballers earn so much already, but certain clubs like Madrid, United, Barca, City, PSG can double or triple your salary.

Of course it's a bonus to play for a big club, but players are generally selfish. They want the best deal for themselves and their family.

Mertens earns 3.5 million net, doubt any team would be doubling or tripling his salary. That's around 120K (gross) per week.

Edit: it's more than that. He earns 4 million plus 1 million in bonus, so that's 5 million after tax salary.

He’s a pretty average winger. A good false 9, though.

We could double his salary and he'd still be earning considerably less than Sanchez :D
The same can be said for the other clubs I've listed except City, their top earners are earning over double what Mertens is earning.

Considering Mertens would be quiet cheap, the top clubs could definitely add a boost to his wages to 200-250k. Of course, if Mertens doesn't fancy moving then nothing will happen.

He is already on 5 million contract, that's after tax. So it's almost close to 180-200k. He will get that extra 40k in the next contract.

I assure you Utd are only signing one attacker this summer and he will be taking the No.7 shirt from Sanchez!

He'd have to change his surname to Paint if he played in our boring system. white text feckers

Replacing Felliaini with this guy would've been an infinite upgrade, avoids hoof ball tactics too, oh well....

After tax €3.5m apparently
http://www.soccer-blogger.com/2017/...s-for-ssc-napoli-players-in-the-17-18-season/
which is around €70,000 euros per week or at current exchange rates approx £61,000 per week (after tax)

this actually equates to €6,750,000 gross in italy but due to tax laws etc in the UK this would equate to a gross of approx £5,500,000 (or around €6,325,000) ...

Basically he is on around £110,000 a week gross in the UK which frankly i think most premier leagu clubs could give him a big pay rise quite easily if they wanted to

Wouldn't midn him at United if we are unable to sign the likes of Bale (which I doubt would happen anyways).

Di Marzio article says he earns 4 million plus 1 million bonus. I would go with that.

It's almost certain that he will get a raise at Napoli because he wants to stay, but a huge offer from a club could tempt him. Sanchez is on £14m net per season, Ronaldo and Bale are on more than that, Messi is on ridiculous wages. I think Dembele has a contract worth up to 20m euros per year before tax which is double Mertens. It's well within the capabilities of a select few clubs.

Alexis has a brand with the No.7, he is on 600k per week. Do you think United is going to take his number to give it to another player? (he's not Martial)

We need a RW, we already have too many left wingers.

Instead of spending 120m on Ronaldo, I would prefer to sign Mahrez, Tierney and Bonucci for that money. IMO we have other priorities than a LW.

I hope your previous 439 posts weren't as useless as this one as it makes no sense United take the shirt of the player they're marketing as the no. 7 (and who's earning the most at the club). Alexis is here to stay and looking forward to seeing him next season.

Isn't it 999,999 per week plus some dog biscuits?

I know he gets paid lesser than top players at Big clubs. I'm saying no club will double or triple salary for Mertens.
