Obviously struggling to make an impact, he isn't a holding midfielder, so he can either play as a box to box player or as a number 10. Unfortunately with Fernandes pretty much being the best player in the league right now he stands no chance getting into the team as a number 10.

Fred's form in centre mid has also meant getting in the team in the box to box position is hard.

Plus Pogba has shone more in recent weeks and has also shown he can play on the left.

So at the moment Donny just has to sit and wait. Which lets be honest was always likely going to be the case. To be honest, though the fact that that he is basically a reserve just shows how deep our squad is. Genuinely think this is the best squad we have had since 2008

In terms of being the best squad we have had since 2008 - I think prob only our midfield options now. In defence I don't think so (unless Baily and Axel prove able to step in and improve the current crop). If our three young forwards can consistently produce more end product (in addition to Bruno and Cavani, and who knows Diallo), they could come near to matching the 09 - 12 forward options which included Nani, Rooney, RVP, Kagawa etc

Donny's a class player, let's hope he can fit into the team once he is given more consistent play time (long season ahead). Too early to write him off, and great to have such a player that could potentially knit our play better

The situation with him is strange, I'm not sure what to think of it at the moment, hopefully there's a long term plan.

Player needs time to adapt new league and new team. This is common, stop moaning and give it time until end of this year December. There was a time against Sheffield United when Rashford made a run unmarked could be one on one on goal which VDB didn’t pass the ball to him but passed it backwards. This basically reminds you LVG football trying to keep possession rather than looking for chance to play risky passes. Difference between Ajax and United philosophy, something he needs time to adapt.

I wasn't moaning, I simply said I hope there's a plan, he wasn't Ole's first choice, and as far as adapting goes there are some who adapt immediately and others who take time, in our very own squad Bruno and Fred represent both ends of the spectrum. Ole's comments Adnan just posted sound promising.

Fans just use Donny's lack of game time as something to have a go at Ole. Instead of criticising Ole for him not having minutes, fans need to understand the logistics.

I have seen so many say.. how is Dan James, McTominay, Mata ahead of him.. well its because they play a different position.

Donny is most effective as a 10. We have Bruno at 10, if you asked every fan would they drop Bruno for Donny the answer will be no.

He can possibly play as an 8 but the current set up doesn't have us playing a 8. Even Pogba is having to play out wide because we play to 6's.

Once this squad gets a quick CB, a proper DM then Donny and Pogba can be used in the 8 but until then, it would not work.

Well that's a load of crap because he's not fast enough to do that.

His best position so far has clearly been in central midifeld IMO, and I thought he played very well against Leipzig at home especially the first half.

He is best when he can use the ball quickly and play forwards, playing higher up the pitch requires more speed and strength which is where he is struggling currently.

I'd like to see him played alongside Fred again, I thought they played well together against the turkish side.

You don't have to be fast to play in such a role. The problem for us would be the chap behind him at RB who wouldn't provide the threat going forward.

You do if you're playing wide as you have to be able to dribble out of tight spaces.

While he did a decent job against Everton in that position it relies on the fullback pushing higher so he can cut inside, without somebody to play off he can't beat them 1v1 where as somebody like Pogba can.

It's just a waste IMO. I don't get why we don't try a proper 4-3-3 like he played at Ajax, it seems we've done everything but play him in his proper position he made his name in?!

Matic / Pogba / DVB in a 3 would be the best way witout Fernandes IMO.

Well that's where he played for Ajax. Not in a diamond though(well kinda with a false 9 as a striker). Diamond doesn't have to mean that he plays as a winger, but also can mean that he's a CM playing on 1 side with a wingback on overlap.
That's something that he's used to and in my eyes he would be able to make an instant impact. But like the tweets says, Ole is not going to implement it anytime soon. Which means that VDB will be ignored.

He would be playing in central midfield in transition and off the ball he would go wide to quell the threat of the opposition fullback. But the width must come from our fullback.

I do agree with the rest of your post. But it seems Ole wants time to work on alternative setups but unfortunately with the quick turn around in games he just doesn't have that time so is going with what he knows best, if what Laurie Whitwell is saying is correct.

Personally I'm hoping VdB is deployed in a midfield two in some games because he's far more talented than a number of our players in such a role and has the ability help us retain possession and progress the ball better. He's played in big European games in a two for Ajax so it would be good to see him tried out there if we want to attempt to effectively progress play from deeper and retain possession which is a weakness in our team right now IMO.

Man Utd 0:2 Man City
5 subs possible, 4 midfielders already on the pitch and he gets 8 whole minutes of being ignored. Must be an early christmas for him.

Van De Beek Is a bloody goal scorer from midfield and did it so many time in clutch minutes.

Ole clearly doesnt give a shit about that.

I actually felt for him tonight.

Being brought on with 3 minutes to go was humiliating for him.

There must be something going on behind the scenes with him that we don't know about. He's a professional, but he has been treated anything but.

I'd refuse. This is just an insult.

I've been relatively relaxed about his non-inclusion in the team so far, but him getting 8 minutes at 2-0 today genuinely made me feel embarassed for him. For the last few years he's been playing European and international football at a ridiculously high level for his age and now he's being treated like an 18 year old?

I’m not thinking the lack of opportunities is that weird but the bringing him on with minutes to go is. Absolutely pointless.

Paid 45m for a player to come in the last 3 minutes while we're losing. What a farce of a signing.

Insult throwing him on with only a few minutes left.

2 down and game over, on you go Donny.

Terrible management.

That was bizarre. Terrible man management from Ole.

Be interesting to see if he starts at the weekend

I always feel bad for players when they get brought on in those situations. But particularly bad for Donny because he is seeing so little game time.

Turning into one of our most pointless signings we’ve done which is a shame because he is certainly better then half of our midfielders but isn’t getting any actual chances to show it.

How humiliating it has to be. Feel really sorry for the lad since months. I don't think he deserves this. He's 6th midfielder in the picking order.

I guess the issue is who would he come on for? Even though they were playing poorly it's a bit difficult to take off Martial, Rashford or Bruno for somebody who hasn't really looked much of a goal-threat so far. Pogba was playing decently. McTominay had already been taken off for Greenwood. So that just leaves Fred or one of the defenders, any of which leaves us extremely open at the back.

McTominay deserves to be dropped, so if van de Beek doesn't get any chance it's not looking good for him.

And 8mins is not "a chance".

Why are people moaning?

Who would people have put him on for?

Ole did exactly what I expected and probably would have done myself, which is take off McTominay, drop Pogba a bit deeper and put Greenwood on, who actually looked quite lively when he came on.

Course he could have probably come on for Bruno, who for his standards didnt have a great game but Bruno always has something special in him.

I can imagine VdB will start against Watford. Hopefully he has a good game because lets be honest, hes not taken his when given them so far.

It's not just about tonight. It seemed like back in October, the consensus was "there's loads of games in December". He didn't get a single minute in the Christmas fixtures.

He's either awful on the training ground, or Ole just doesn't want him. It seems like everyone else in the front 6 is rotating and getting minutes, except him.

It's ridiculous that these 45m we spent for him could have been used for another player that would have played in the starting lineup. Half of the season he has been barely of any use to us.

Remember when everyone was saying "take good care of him" when he joined, Solskjaer's done the exact opposite.

He's not really ever played international football. He's a sub at our national team behind Wijnaldum.

If it's true that he was forced on Ole, then credit to Ole. He knew Grealish was on another planet to Donny and isn't going to play him just cos he was forced upon him. He's our worst midfielder, which says a lot as our options aren't great.

If Ole did want him then it's strange. It was obvious he was a rubbish player so if he only realised that watching him up close in training and games then that's worrying.

How can you call him a rubbish player? Based on what?

He will be sold in 2 years, unless we get in a manager that wants to keep possession, relies on positioning and move the ball around. Under Ole, he is useless.
