Do we need a new Striker in the summer?

Firstly this is kinda a knee jerkish thread but bare with me;

Rooney, on his day world class we know this, even when it's not his day like tonight and Sunday still capable of scoring so no problem with him.

Hernandez, fair to say he's found it hard this season. Hasn't been able to slot into the side as easily as he did last season, looks desperately short of match sharpness and I dont think we can still be blaming the lack of pre-season.

Welbeck, a lot of potential without doubt but is there that much between him and Hernandez when both are at their best? Welbeck probably the better outside the box, Hernandez undoubtedly the better inside the box.

Berbatov, obviously out of favour, dunno if he's injured at the moment or what but obviously will never play with Rooney when Rooney's fit.

With that being said is a new striker something we should be looking at bringing in during the summer? A genuine world class striker to play up front with Rooney week in week out, rather than constantly swap between Hernandez and Welbeck?
We don't need any new forwards. Not unless we are letting Berbatov and Owen go.

It's our midfield we need to worry about. We ned to replace Scholes properly and we need a player in the Yaya Toure mould.

He isnt even good enough for QPR atm, let alone us. Though i do agree that we dont need to buy another striker even if berba and owen left. If we did though, it'd be a cheap one not a big expensive signing.

I'm sure he would have featured more prominently had Warnock stayed manager. Mark Hughes biggest priority is getting as many points as possible from now till the end of the season. He's not really going to take a punt on an unproven striker is he?

If Macheda gets a good preseason under him and gets a run of games i'm sure he can do well for us. Why else would Fergie keep him?

If we let Owen/Berbatov go it should definitely be on the cards. I'd say bringing in a young striker with potential in this scenario is the most viable option (wages/fee), particularly as we aren't going to bring in a top class central midfielder and a top class striker.

Obviously RVP and a top class CM would be the ultimate dream ^^.

We need to play 4-3-3 more, which means we need less forward options and more midfield options.

Most of our European success in the last few years has involved that formation.

Thats the manager's job. Surely you cannot fault him for it.

What Macheda needs is match time. Be it with QPR or with a club in the championship. Thats the only way he's ever going to stake a claim for a spot in our team. If he just comes back to us next season and stays, he'l be left to play reserve games the whole time which wont do either of the parties involved any good.

I'd like us to play 4231, for which we'd probably need to buy a versatile forward if we are to assume that Owen and Berbs will leave us.

That said if a top striker somehow becomes available then it's always worth going for them. In an idealistic dream world I'd love us to somehow poach back Ronaldo.

The resources should be focused on the right midfielder. Anything left over may be wisely spent in a further more defensive-minded midfielder who may strengthen the squad there. Particularly if the priority midfielder is someone who could somewhat make up for Rooney's absence when he is not available.

Not bothered about getting finished articles. feck the Sneijder's of this world. I can wait for sex, I'm a married man.

If anything is left over then it wouldn't afford much better than Ba, which is not a bad call but I wouldn't be too bothered either way.

In short, no. Our final third play has not being good lately, the final ball to our strikers has being below par at times and chances are few and far between until late in the game. Chico and Welbz are young and still learning. Berbs will be here for sure next season.

So no striker to come in, not an instant first teamer anyways.

If someone like Cavani, Muniain or Hulk is available we should be in.

they'll cost a minimum 20-30m. Too much for a 3rd-4th striker. I was thinking more in the line of Bemba Ba. At 7m he's a catch.

Welbeck will be better than all of them. We don't need any new strikers. The OP forgot to factor in the amount of improving still left in Welbeck. He will be the 'genuinely world class' striker that we need.

Very high hopes/praise indeed.

This. For Welbeck to be world class would mean he's one of the best strikers in the world.... that I cannot see.

I don't think it's impossible. He's got the physique, pace and technique he just needs the finishing and the consistency.

Henry was 22 when he signed for Arsenal and came off the back of a couple of mediocre seasons and Monaco and Juventus, it wasn't until the second half of that season that he really kicked on.

No reason why Danny can't do the same.

Very high hopes/praise indeed.

I rate him. When I was in the newbies and he was at Sunderland i said that he'll return and displace both Berbatov and Hernandez. That was unthinkable to most people at the time, but it happened. Welbeck will bully defenders when he's at his peak. I think there'll come a time when people begin to discuss whether he is better than Rooney.

Totally agree, pocco. The thing about Welbeck is that he's still incredibly raw and has only just started growing into his frame. The potential he has is frightening though. He could become the complete striker. He's got everything in his game, just needs to put it all together. A bit of good luck with injuries and he'll be a monster by his mid twenties.

I'd keep playing Welbeck as much as possible, the more he develops.. he is going to be top notch. His movement is fantastic, and he's got a bit of everything.

I'd love to see us bring in a few more creative types though, for central midfield areas.

I don't think we need new striker. I think we have good options in that position. If you don't count goals, you can say Welbeck is one of most complete strikers in the world atm, without overrating him. I know it sounds funny(without goals), but it's not something you cannot learn him. His workrate is fantastic, his technique is great, he has great physicals, he can easily dribble players, his pace is good. Goals will eventually come, no need to worry about that.
I don't rate Hernandez that high, but if the team is playing well, you can count he will give you goal or two, you cannot ask for more. And you cannot ask for better player as a sub, he is great as a joker.
We have Berba too, he is probably third option as a striker, but he is second option for Rooney's position. If you give him run of games, he can do well, we all know he is a good player.
I am more worried about LB position, evra is really catastrophic this season.

Agree with both. Welbeck is a massive talent. All he needs is luck with injuries, he'l be brilliant.

20th league title? Counting your chickens much?

Bring in someone who's 27 5 years older than Welbeck the latter is still the future isn't he? Sure he may not play as many games as he has this season but he'd still be part of the long term plan

I don't like any idea that leads to that scenario. He's not looked out of place at all with the amount of games he's played this season, and if anything Hernandez could do with picking up a few more games, so a new striker would be taking games directly from those two. Welbeck is not just the future, he's clearly good enough for the present.

I personally don't think that we need a new striker. If there was a truly world class one out there available, like an RVP or Ibrahimovic, then I'd take them, but the only way we'd get players like that is if we fork out massive money, which we certainly won't do on a striker.

I'm not saying that we're perfect in the striking department, but I think we're a lot better there than we are in several other areas of the pitch.

We all know what Rooney can do. His best role is when we play him as a second striker, however he can also play as an out and out striker when we need him to, and as he showed during the 2009/2010 season, he's good at it, even if it's not his main role.

Hernandez and Welbeck are only going to get better. Hernandez already has the attributes for being a top poacher. All he needs to do now is score more consistently, and work a little on improving his overall game, even if he doesn't need it too much for a poaching role. Welbeck's a phyiscal player, and a hard worker, but there's no doubt that he has some technical ability there. He's only going to improve as he works on it.

I can see Owen going, but Berbatov may stay for another season. He still has a role to play sometimes, and we all know what he's capable of doing.

Also, it's easy to forget that we have some talented young strikers lurking around as well. Macheda is starting to look like a bit of a lost cause, but Keane and King both have hope, and could be talents.

Basically, unless we have a complete disaster with developing our first team, younger stikers over the next few years, and our youth stikers turn out to be completely hopeless, I don't think we need anyone new.

For me whether we need a new striker depends on the attitude of Berbatov. If he is happy to be fighting for his place, with reduced game-time, and importantly if he can maintain his form with reduced game-time, then we don't need anyone new.

Rooney, Hernandez, Welbeck and Berbatov would be the four strikers that a champions league club needs.

If Berbatov wants to go, or he's dropped off in training, then we do need someone though.

I think it might be the Summer to overhaul our whole team. Before you laugh at me, I present you my plan.

Sell Rooney to Real Madrid for £38m. We should get that money easily. Sell Nani to Inter who need to improve for £24m. We'll be left with too few forwards and wingers. Buy Llorente for £20m. Buy Muniain for £23m. Still £9m to spend - buy Tiote.

De Gea
Rafael Vidic Ferdinand Evra
Valencia Tiote Cleverley Muniain
Llorente Welbeck

There's no balance and little creativity there.

Sell Vidic to Real Madrid for £20m. Sell De Gea back to Spain, to Valencia, for £12m. Sell Evra to Panathinaikos for £5m. We'll have £37m. Buy creativity. Buy Hazard from Lille for £24m. Have nowhere to play him. Change of formation.

Lindegaard
Rafael Smalling Ferdinand Fabio
Tiote Carrick
Valencia Hazard Muniain
Llorente

Defence is weak. Sell Ferdinand to Tottenham for £4m. Buy Walker for £12m. Buy Assou Ekotto for £9m. Good full backs.

Lindegaard
Walker Smalling Jones BAE

Good.

Carrick is slow. Sell him to Tottenham for £6m. Sell Valencia to Milan for £15m. Buy Bale for £20m. Buy Martinez for £20m. Sell Tiote to Chelsea for £76m. Buy Herrera for £20m.

Herrera Martinez
Muniain Hazard Bale
Llorente

Sell Lindegaard for £10m to Apoel. Buy Neuer for £30m. Sell Smalling to Blackburn for £2m. Sell Jones to Real Madrid for £30m. Buy Cavani for £30m. Change formation. Buy Kompany for £20m.

Stopped reading at sell Rooney to Madrid for £38 million.

We would get £38.5.

If we sell a striker, then we need to bring one in.

We need proper midfielders though. That has to be the priority.

I feel you're onto something here.

It's a difficult one for me. We need a player who can replace Rooney 'in the hole' if Wayne is out of rested, but assuming we are buying a top quality player they will also need to be able to have a role alongside Rooney.

I still think Modric is the answer. He can play in a CM pair, he can play in the hole and he could play out wide as well when needed.

Modric and then ideally a more defensive minded midfielder to cover for carrick - Martinez has always been one of my choices for that role and the game against Bilbao just confirmed it for me.

Giggs, Young?

The former is 38, the latter I'm not convinced of playing centrally, think he is best left on the left - he certainly isn't an adequate replacement for Rooney in that role considering how dependant we are on him (Rooney).

We have berba, for some reason though, Sir Alex does not use him. He must be the automatic choice to play when rooney doesnt.

Regarding the last bit of your post, Martinez would be great but he'd play alongside carrick, not as cover for him. He's far too good for that. That said, till we have carrick, i cannot see us going for martinez. very similar players.

Surprised at this thread; I think Danny Welbeck has been fantastic this season. He needs a little more composure in the box, but that will surely come; his all-round play has been brilliant. I don't understand knocking Chicharito either; give him run of games and he'll score a run of goals no doubt. SAF's man management is second to none, he knows what he's doing when it comes to the above pair, blooding-in Welbeck whilst advising patience in Hernandez; we've got an excellent set of strikers. That said, SAF's not shy to bring in a top forward even when we don't particularly need one, is he?

Rooney/Welbeck/Hernandez, I'm happy with that.

I'd still be over the moon if we signed Demba Ba though.

Why can't you be our manager? :(

I'd love to see Ba here to be honest. Definitely not a priority though. I find the Berbatov situation quite bizarre. He's an excellent player but I don't feel it has quite worked out for him at United, and there's no shame in admitting that. Sir Alex doesn't seem to trust him against anyone half decent anymore, so I don't really see how he's contributing.

I think a lot depends on how we're planning to play in the league and in Europe next season. If we're going to continue playing 4-4-2 then I think there's a need for another genuine top class striker. If not then we probably don't need one.
