Do we need a new No. 1 Keeper or a Backup?

We need a new keeper, but we don't have the money to get a top one right now.
We could promote Vitek and have him and Onana fight for the spot until we can bring in a world class talent.
That or we find the biggest youth talent in the position and make him No.2

For a youth keeper we will see mistakes, but we are seeing those anyway right now so why not?

The keeper position isn't our problem right now. In a more just and equitable world we'd have a better starting and backup keeper, but they're good enough for now.

Onana has serious credentials as a keeper and is not how he is often painted to be, but he's just not consistent enough to be our number one.

We need someone a little steadier like VDS who is technically sound and can marshall the defence better.

We've tried to be a little too cute in signing Onana when our defence itself is not that settled. Someone a little more pragmatic would be ideal.

Was it the Euros where Bayindir made a massive howler they kept repeating in gif form on twitter for months? Seems a bit of a joke.

Onana is a solid keeper and there really aren't many viable options for replacements that have guarantees attached to them.

He's ranked 15th in Europe at shot stopping (out of 156), 43rd at taking crosses and his comfort on the ball means that we can invite the press onto us in a way that supports our general play. He makes a few mistakes, true, but if you really think that his mistakes are outweighing his contribution, you need to learn what makes a good keeper. Its not just about totting up world class saves vs howlers. His bread and butter stuff is excellent.

Can be improved upon? In theory, sure, but in practice, its hard to say who we would get. Allison Becker is a freak, but he isn't leaving Liverpool, not for us anyway. Beyond that, you're going for someone with worse stats on the basis that they made fewer mistakes. Is that a sensible move?

The most you can say is that no-one is beyond criticism, and if his mistakes are the difference between us winning the league and not, then he becomes a priority. But right now we have so many positions that aren't even remotely good enough that we need to replace that our keeper is not even close to a priority.

A goalkeepers performance highly depends on the defense ahead of him. A good example. Victor Valdes, Barcelona's rather mediocre ex-goalkeeper won the Zamora Trophy (the award goes to the goalkeeper who has the lowest "goals-to-games" ratio) a lot more times than the legendary Iker Casillas who is considered as one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time just because Barcelona's defense with legends like Carles Puyol was a lot better than Real Madrid's defense. So i think strenghten our defense is a lot more important task than get a new keeper. Having said that, if we keep Onana, there's gonna be always a good chance to concede some cheap goals as he makes some ridiculous mistakes every now and then.

Bayindir would probably improve markedly with game time. Coming in cold must have been very difficult.

Yes to both. I don’t really trust Onana, and the thought of Bayindir as number one when Onana goes to AFCON is incredibly sobering, still.

Speaking of AFCON, I don’t know when the next one is but we’ll likely lose Onana, Mazraoui and Amad. That’s not going to be pretty.

Shame we couldnt hold on to Jack Butland but probably too good (and young) to be a back up keeper.

There really isnt anything wrong with Tom Heaton. I dont think we would have lost the game last night with him in goal.
Bang on.
I think Heaton should have been used far more when de gea was being a bit erratic. Heaton is a good GK and whilst his age counts against him now he should be our no. 2

Onana has done well this season, the mistakes recently are not representative of the season...unlike last

Onana isn’t a good goalkeeper , overweight and don’t have reflexes of a goalkeeper . We like to see other players keeping the ball not our goalkeeper ! Onana only job it’s to safe us if called but he can’t be trusted as a goalkeeper.

The next 2 transfer windows will be extremely interesting (if you manage to avoid all the fiction)

Could do worse than go for someone like Travers at Bournemouth in my opinion.
A very steady GK who would probably be happy at playing cup games and backup, would be available relatively low cost.

How is Suzuki doing?

Looking at a Parma fan forum, there seems to be mixed emotions. Some great moments, some erratic ones (sounds familiar). They seem to think he’s got lots of potential though, and that the team is allowing him to face too many shots.

How is Suzuki doing

I don’t think much will have changed in an hour.

Onana isn't in the same bracket as peak de gea, peak var der saar or peak schmeiechel.

However we have more pressing areas to fix. So a very good young no2 with potential to replace Onana in the longer term would be good

If I remember correctly he had effectively retired from International football when we signed him. He then changed his mind.
Replace both.
Bayindir was shown up badly this week and during the summer.
I'm dead against signing African internationals. He did retire but it's typical of our due diligence that we either didn't care our first choice keeper will disappear for a full month or didn't ask if he would un-retire if his country asked him to.

Unless it's a surefire improvement then back up.

Having the best keeper possible is imperative however, practically every top manager tries their best to sort that position before going for the honors.

Both pep and arteta insisted on improving their above average keepers, klopp got Alison etc etc.

Yeah I feel the same. I don’t think it’s top of the in-tray, but eventually we need an upgrade (in the same way Arteta saw the need to upgrade on Ramsdale.)

Vroom, Vroom

I still think Martinez is top class but chances of prising him away from Villa is close to zero right now. I truly believe it's important that a keeper has PL experience which is why I think even Maignan would be a bit of a gamble, Neuer is the only one I'd say was worth the risk and he's never leaving Germany. I do wonder sometimes about Courtois...

Yes, but as others have stated it's probably not a priority.

I'd still try and get Kelleher in from Liverpool though. Some club is going to get a top class keeper there for little money in the summer.

I was very excited about Onana, I thought his passing would offset his eccentricities. But so often he just hoofs it out or to Amad (wtf is that about). Like Kepa was passing better yesterday, and then you have at least 4-5 others who are also better, Allison, Ederson, Raya etc..

He is fine and we have at least 3 or 4 other positions that need sorting with a limited amount of money available. I think he'll be here at least another 2 seasons before even considering a replacement.

Onana really grew on me as last season progressed. By the end I was a fan, he really cut down on the number mistakes he was making after looking bad to begin with.

He's not making them so frequently that I worry too much yet. When he does make one there is a bit of a "Here we go again" feeling, but it's mostly remembering back to Autumn 2023.

Still ok with him, would just look for a backup.

Por qué no los dos?

Finding a competent backup goalkeeper is not that difficult or cost-prohibitive, all things considered.

Finding a competent starting goalkeeper is more difficult and typically more expensive, but there are a couple ways we could go about it...
  • Stick with Onana for the next 1½ years and try our luck in the 2026 summer free agency. Some of 'em could even sign a pre-contract in the preceding winter window. Proven custodians in Ederson, Courtois and Maignan, an up-and-comer like Carnesecchi — quite an array of choices on offer, provided we do our due diligence (we wouldn't want to burden ourselves another past-it player on big wages) and they do not extend with their current clubs.
  • Sign a talented and relatively young but somewhat experienced goalkeeper (like Chevalier, Trubin or indeed Carnesecchi) in the 2025 summer window for a decent chunk of money, and have him compete with Onana for the No. 1 spot. To the victor go the spoils, the vanquished could be moved on.
  • Somehow identify a diamond in the rough, who won't cost a lot of money and could compete with Onana for the No. 1 spot.
