So are you saying our scout has signing privileges and these can actually overrule the manager’s opinion?

These signings are future stars for us, not Mourinho. However, we were looking for the director of football, we wanted Monchi last summer but that job limited role has been given to Ribalta to identify the type of players we want and should sign whilst until we can find the director of the football, which I believe we will do when Jose is leaving. I think Ribalta will overrule manager's opinions if the scouting department is not convinced that one of Jose's target would be good for us but it is up to Ed Woodward to decide.

Ed Woodward has adopted Chelsea's academy policy in 2016 for the transfer window after restructuring the academy and scouting network, they would be considered cash cow as the extra income for our transfer window budget to spend and also bringing through youngsters. Juve has the same policy as Chelsea with all loans and sells them later, which Ribalta was working at Juve scouting before, he has experience of doing stuff like this, signing a lot of youngers and for the academy, it has worked so well for Juve.

You are over playing Ribalta's position here. Only person who can overrule Jose is Woodward, after him Jose is the boss and that's how it is at ManUtd. Ribalta isn't even DoF, he is just head of scouting. If we are signing for academy then it will have nothing to do with Jose, if we are signing for first team and that too paying 20 million then Jose will be giving his inputs on whether to sign a player or not.

In short, Ribalta might have scouted him but it's Jose who will make the last decision. Also considering we are signing from Portuguese league and especially Porto where Jose will have lot of contacts, I would say this is Jose's signing.

Christ hope not for 2-3 years. Needs to bed in next season to fully be our No 1 RB for the season after. Valencia not good enough last season and will get progressively worse.
2 or 3 more years of Valencia? Please no. If I was a religious person I’d be praying nightly that we are going to bring in song with this guy another RB who is ready to go.

Reckon he'll take over sooner than that. Tony's probably got a year of ok-to-poor perfomances left. Young might even take over RB next season.

I'm not sure he will be ready to start at 20 yo. If we do sign this guy, I can only guess that my scenario is what Mourinho has in mind. If we're getting a ready made RB to replace Valencia now, then there's no point in buying another one who is 19. I wouldn't want Valencia starting for the next 2-3 years either but it's a realistic picture.

have to admit I hadn't even heard of him until last week! but can someone tell me the last guy to come from Portugal and be massive...?

How about the bolded to complete our transfer business?

On a side note, I am still devastated that Falcao didn't work out, one of my favourite players before he joined and I thought he could become to us what Aguero has been to City when we signed him.

Indeed, Guedes, Ruben Neves, Sandro and Dalot would solve most of our problems.

Mourinho doesn't like U20 players, it doesn't look like Jose signing. Surely, it's Ribalta's signing, he has signed Coman 18, Dybala 21, Morata 21, Rugani 20, Pogba 19.

As far as I know, Rabita is after Embalo and Barella.

How do you know that?

Rojo was worse.

Nah he was at least a known talent who was established for club and country. Plus he was a nutter with legal issues which made it entertaining.

This guy is rated crazily on the caf from 7 senior appearances. I'm not excited in the slightest about it.

very happy with this signing if it goes ahead. Price looks okay and we have Valencia still available in case the kid doesn't fit in well. From the reviews so far look like the profile which we need on right side and he can slot in on left side in case of emergency as already showcased at porto. Lets make it happen.

It's status quo, any young player linked to us are incredible.

If he isn't ready to be a full term part of Portos squad then I doubt he'll be ready for us for a while. So guess we're stuck with Valencia/Young at RB for the forseeable future. Sigh.

How can you not be slightly excited? he’s highly rated not just on here in a position we’re desperate for an upgrade. I love these signings of high potential youngsters, it’s such a fun ride watching them grow and hopefully blossom into stars.

Bebe

Bebe is a legendary transfer that still makes me laugh, but he’s not really comparable is he? No one knew who the feck he was, wasn’t highly rated and only real experience was in the homeless World Cup!

Most people know very little about Dalot so to state he is crazily rated on here is inaccurate. But he is highly regarded by Portuguese football experts so there’s nothing wrong with being excited about that.

 The sense of entitlement and spoilt brats in here is borderline disgusting, I hope most of you are joking.

Yes, you are only allowed to be excited if we’re signing Carvajal. Diogo Dalot? Never heard of him, so he MUST be shit.

That's the first I've heard of that - sounds very interesting! I'm delighted if this is the case.

Because he's not an upgrade? He's an upgrade if he continues his trajectory, which we won't know for a season or two.. but this isn't a player you'd look to sign to immediately replace a 33 year old full back.

It's more my view that Valencia needs immediate replacing and Mourinho clearly thinks different. He's brought Dalot in for the future and we have had enough of those which end badly.

I'm not saying Dalot will flop. I'm not even suggesting it. I just don't see the excitement of a player who has 7 appearances in the Portuguese league.

OK he's a full back and we need full backs. I think a lot of posters are just happy to see a full back more than anything else. We did the same with Darmien when he joined.

Were you not excited for Shaw? I was. Shame he turned out to be lazy and a massive flop, but that’s football isn’t it? Not many teenagers are guaranteed to be a success.

I’m not going to stop being excited about signing potentially great players because plenty of them didn’t work out, where’s the joy in that. Sounds like a pretty miserable outlook to have.

If you had my life, you'd be pretty miserable most of the time :(

Memphis? etc etc

The flip coin to those being excited about signing an inexperienced young player is that it means we're likely not to get an experienced RB in to challenge Valencia. That to me is far more concerning and you could argue actually a bad use of our resources.

If however we still do sign an experienced RB to challenge Valencia... happy days.
