How did he suddenly become a good defender in such a short space of time? Always favour him 1 on 1 these days and that back post defending is fantastic.

Neville almost creamed his pants on commentary when he won like his 4th header of the half and Antonio was breathing down his neck.

He’s proved me wrong. I thought he was a meh player with very little going for him but he’s come on such a long way. Very pleased for him.

Drug test this man. Where did that performance come from.

Never seen him defend so well. He looked like an experienced CL winner out there tonight.

Very impressive how much he has improved defensively compared to when he first came here. Teams would target his side time after time and he looked lost both in 1v1s and in general positioning. He has now turned into an above average defender in both of those areas. He seems like a very coachable player too.

Brilliant defensive performance from him today.. he’s come on leaps and bounds this season.

Dalot is back on form and thank God for that. The way he defended today, the ball in the air and the channel, was superb.

We do have another year option right? If he has a good WC, I won’t be surprised to see few teams lurking around but I think he will stay…. Fingers crossed

He is reaching the level it was expected from him at Youth level for the Portugal NT who won Euro under 17 and 19, and with the Porto team who won the UEFA Youth League.

Actually that Porto generation had 4 players in the backline named Diogo. Diogo Costa (GK at Porto) Diogo Dalot, Diogo Queirós, Diogo Leite (Union Berlin).

There's a lot of wrong things Mourinho has done at United, but he was being serious when he talked about Dalot being the best fullback from his group age, at least in Europe, a lot of people laughed about it because TAA already was a well established player at Liverpool even being 1 year older.

That's not important really, what matters is that at 23 he certainly his proving he can play at this level, and that credit has to be given to ETH and his coaching staff.

Even better than this is that he really is a likeable person who knows where he came from and knows what was expected from him. Never thought I would say this but at this level he surelly can start for Portugal, if with Cancelo or him on the left it's another matter.

If he keeps this up then he’s going to prove a lot of people (including me) wrong.

His IQ has always been the issue, but his positioning for those back post headers was superb. Good on him.

Superb today, feel like ETH knows exactly how he wants every single player to operate and it helps these young players no end. Great defending today which I don’t normally attribute with him, there’s clear improvement.

Yep. Barring some last-minute surprises, the quartet of João Cancelo, Diogo Dalot, Nuno Mendes and Raphaël Guerreiro will definitely make the final cut at the fullback position.

Maybe Mario Rui from Napoli instead Guerreiro, at least based on form, who knows.

Ivanovic-esque today.

That's actually a good comparison. I was thinking who he is similar to, but I think you're spot on. Energetic, good defensive insticts and reactions around the box, decent crosser, excellent technical ability, and just generally a bit of an annoying prescence wherever he pops up. Let's hope he keeps it up.

Really good again. Gary Neville was creaming his pants every time he made a defensive header.

Some players just shine in a certain set up I guess. Hard to argue we need a RB now, other than someone for rotation like ETH said.

Plenty of defending done today and also called into action in the air where hes better than most rightbacks, defended the situation well against Antonio

Not sure I'd say Ivanovic was known for this (!) but he was incredible in the air offensively and defensively, so hopefully Dalot can continue in this

I think back to that game last year at home to Villareal where Dalot was absolutely atrocious. He looked like a competition winner, just all over the place.

But you get a serious manager in who knows what he's doing and look at the change in him.

He was brilliant.

That was a monstrous performance. I didn’t think he had it in him to be so defensively solid, but his improvement this season has been incredible. His attitude and passion is just so contagious. He’s quickly becoming one of our most reliable players. Watching him & Martinez celebrate clearances & blocks as if they were goals is just brilliant.

He made Danjuma look like prime Neymar

Combination of learning what ETH wants and expects from his fullbacks and i think his time at AC Milan would helped his positional and defensive side of his game.

It's not often you would say he was the stand out defender in terms of defending the box and owning the backs to the wall moments but he was. That was outstanding nous to identify the threat from West Ham on multiple occasions.

To be honest, I think his defending has been his best quality this season. His best performances for us have been because of his defending. It's his final ball that still needs a lot of work. His crossing is very hit and miss. He can play some really good progressive passes, but his crosses vary wildly in quality.

Look what proper coaching does. Great game.

Excellent performance. Great aerial work, massive desire, particularly that one sprint back he made when another of our players was actually closer to their winger but Dalot was like , nah pal, that’s my position, I’m gonna get back for that cheers.

Fantastic today. I lost count of the amount of aerial clearances he had in the second half.

I know ETH said after the game that a top team should have two RB’s but I don’t see who you can realistically go and buy for less than 40 whom Would take his spot. Frimpong? Dumfries? They’d have to be going some to beat Dalot in this kind of form.

Yes there is still a lot to improve upon but he pops up everywhere and gets some vital touches on balls and stuff once he can add a bit more quality to both ends of the pitch overall he’ll take some replacing. Probably needs to start making a bit more overlaps instead of always just hanging back or going central.

Also ETH pretty much put the nail in Bissaka’s coffin.

I don't mean to say he was a great dribbler or anything, but I always thought he had good touches and close control, despite not looking it. But I might remember wrong.
