Diogo Costa Porto keeper

His performance at the WC doesn't give the belief that he can do it on the big occasions. For the sums being quoted, he'd be bad business.

There's no way we're paying 75M for a keeper given what we need in the squad.

Alisson cost £67 million, 5 years ago.

If he's good enough, he'll be worth whatever it takes to get him.

I have no problem with top GKs costing fortune, but I just don't think spending 75m on a GK this summer is the smartest way of managing our budget and addressing main issues.

Unless one of your main issues is a keeper who has a few attributes that world class keeper has.

Worth bearing in mind that Porto need money this summer, so possible he's available for less. I'd assume they'd want as much upfront as possible though.

Top club options that can afford him are all set in that position right now.

Where can he go? Is there another top team out there that really needs a keeper that would cost as much as him? Arsenal? Chelsea?
Hes going somewhere, that is pretty obvious. No idea where though

Of course, but sadly this could be said about several positions in our squad. 75m on a GK would mean we don't spend considerable elsewhere, and I think the priority is still the striker and midfielders.

We are assuming the budget is 150m. Based on what? I'm sure there are things going on behind the scenes in relation to getting some players sold too. What could we expect from sales? 50/60m? Also it's never 75m upfront. It will be paid off in instalments over 4 or 5 years if structured that way, and by then we'll have loads of made up sponsors and spend what we want.

Willing to bet that people said similar things about Allison

......

Only seen him play for Brazil; never been that impressed with him tbh. His performances must be on a different level for Roma if he's attracting these massive bids.

Seems shite and crap at catching crosses, nervous at Roma everytime i see him, will be a expensive ever so slight upgrade on Krapius

That’s way too much money for a keeper that’s not called Oblak. No wonder Madrid walked away from that.

Ermm guys, he looks dodgy as feck :nervous: I don't watch the Seria A, so I've only ever properly seen him in the CL (where he didn't exactly cover himself in glory). But looking at that video makes me hope Liverpool sign him for a world record fee  For what are supposedly his 'best' saves that was underwhelming to say the least! He seems to spill the difficult shots in front of him rather than push them to the side. For some reason there was never a striker there waiting, but I guarantee that in the PL there will be.

Also, from what I understand people rate him for his skill on the ball (which is a weird thing to rate a goalie for, but I digress), but when rushed by a forward he only seems to have that one little flick that he does every single time. If you ask me he was damn lucky to make it through an entire season without being made to look stupid, but surely strikers will have watched videos of him now and have him figured out?

If Allison is worth 62 millions, DDG must be worth 150 millions, isn’t he ?

Why dont they bid for Kasper ? Or Pope ? Or even Heaton ? Cheaper, proven playing in EPL with weak defence with good saves statistic.

However, dont care too much, as long as their CBs are shite, even signing Gordon Banks will not help.

Looked at his wiki.
Has played 80 club games.. is about to turn 26.

All the hype on the back of 1 good season?

3 months ago, i had never heard of this guy, honestly.
Now Liverpool are offering 70 million (€ or £ not sure to be honest), and everyone is worried they'll catch up with us.
I'm sure Karius was rated quite high when he was signed (i'd even heard of that guy), and how did that turn out?

30 mil for Curtois but 65 for Alisson?

£66m for a goalkeeper. Mother of Christ.

It was very questionable when he became Brazil #1 because he wasn’t a top 5 keeper in Brazil but he was a favorite of Taffarel. He has improved a lot since then, he went from disaster to solid with room to improve. Excellent ball playing keeper not Ederson level though, his reflex save are good but he is still prone to lapses and can do a better job of commanding the area.

I rate Ederson over this guy any day. Maybe I've not watched him enough times but is he £66m good?

66m for a goalkeeper.
This will go well.

The only times I saw him play for Roma was against Liverpool in the CL, he looked like pretty shite to be fair. I remember thinking this keeper reminds me of who Roma had in the net when we spanked them 7-1.

He looked pretty ropey in the World Cup. To me he doesn't look like a keeper who is going to command his box and his defence. I can see quite a few howlers from him this season.

After watching him at the World Cup and Roma last season I think he's an average keeper, nothing special or spectacular which makes the price a bit steep. If he weren't Brazil's goalkeeper no one would rave about him but much like Dida or Taffarell he gets overrated because of it. Not in the same class as Oblak, de Gea, Neuer, ter Stegen or Courtois.

I always thought of Alisson as a good keeper, but not top tier. I don't think he will compromise Liverpool too much but I also don't believe they should spend a fortune on him, because for that price they should be after world class.

Karius V2.0.

1 good season and hes worth that such a hefty fee?:nervous:

There were obviously others saying he was quality too though, tbf.

I don’t know the full in’s and out’s of their financial situation, how bad is it ? Do they have any deadlines for when they need a cash injection by ? Would it be June 30th like Chelsea ?
Yeah, it's the same deadline, as I believe it's FFP related. No one will pay the release clause, they can hope!

That's what I like to hear. Get him. Or Raya.

We need a elite striker, a elite CM, a RB and possibly a CB. We arent going to splunk 75mil on a keeper, especially with our FFP limitations this summer.

Utd will bring in some cheap competition for de gea this summer.

There’s a strong case to be made that a new GK is a more urgent priority than a new RB or CB. It’s a case I’d certainly accept.

Why are we talking about a new keeper when we have a perfectly good one? Priority all season has been a striker, least in my opinion it has.

Not at £75mil, besides De Gea is staying albeit without assurances of being no1.

Because according to some on redcafe hes the worse keeper in the league and only won the golden gloves award this season because of the defence in front of him.

Surprised by how many people think we should prioritise other positions this summer. For me, GK is second priority behind CF as we need to start being able to play out from the back if we want to control games. If Costa fits the bill then pay the fee. We can't be kicking the can down the road for another year if we have ambitions beyond top 4.

The priority is the striker. That doesn't mean that a striker needs to be done first or at the expense of every other position. The reason everyone in this thread is talking about a goalkeeper is probably because it is a thread about a goalkeeper. There are also numerous threads about prospective targets for a new #9.

I’m one of those who’d rather De Gea didn’t stay, I think he’s one of the three major problems with the team (lack of goal-scoring CF and controlling CM being the others). I don’t know for sure if Costa is the right guy to replace him or worth €75m, but I’d be very happy to see us pay that much for the right keeper ahead of a new RB or CB.

Agreed. It would be frustrating to see us ignore the GK issue and then spend a load of money on a backup CB when Lindelof has proven he's more than adequate cover.

Really  So DeGea didn’t do his part it was all our defence. Never know a defence win the Golden Glove award before.

I can think of 3/4 players we need before bringing a goalkeeper in.

I'm in the same boat to be honest, one of Henderson/DDG is going to go at a minimum,

Henderson would be pure profit and 100k a week off of the wage bill.

If it's DDG then that's 400k a year also off of the wage bill, or at least on reduced wages.

If it's not Utd.

I could see Arteta binning Ramsdale and bringing him in.
Yes, 2 weeks after signing Rasmdale on a new deal and improved wages, we're gonna buy a new GK for 75M. I can see it too.

  1. Why do they need to come in before a goalkeeper? The window runs until September - the order that the players are purchased in is of no significance.
  2. I am sure you are welcome to discuss those players in the relevant thread(s).

Correct.
