Declan Rice

Given that we did not go for them all out suggests it was either media bs or they were seen as potential cheap gambles and we walked away. I wouldn't worry about the scouting and recruitment at this stage given the players we went after.
Or we had a budget... and I do worry about Maguire and James

I wouldn't want him, I don't believe the hype as Flavor Flav would say. I'm curious what West Ham want him for in the current market.

He’ll be like Jack Rodwell, linked to big teams for ages until one day as if by magic he’s sitting on the bench for Bolton or somebody, whilst on massive wages. I seen’d it.

I hope we stay clear of him, quoted at 70M? Feck me I would vale him at 30M.

We should stay clear away from overhyped british players, there are a lot more talented cheaper talents aboard.

I know the link is complete shite because not even we are stupid enough to spend 70m on Delcan fecking Rice, but I still felt a bit sick when I saw this

I’d rather us spend double on Saul from Atletico

Typical media overhyping an English youngster who plays for West Ham

Is Rice all he's cracked to be? Then again the hype seemed to die down when he started being managed by Moyes...

Rice is currently no better than McTominay, and you could argue that Scott has more potential to grow over the next few seasons. I see 4 options for the DM role:
1. Partey, proven, good passer and at the right age. WC. This transfer is very much dependant on if the player is looking for a new challenge or is he just looking for a pay rise. is there a £43m release clause?
2. Zakaria, Hugh potential, proven in the German league, current swiss international, can play CH as well.
3. Stick with what we have for next season.
4. Garner - Looks a super prospect. Highly regarded by the club. Needs to bulk up, gain some experience. It's critical that he gets out on loan and gains the necessary experience.

I think he's a good player. A young player, who is still developing and growing into the holding midfielder position, which players don't normally master until their last 20's. Statically amongst the best in the league at what he does, regards tackles and interceptions. Obviously has to improve his overall game, but at 21, he's going in the right direction.

Do we need him? I'd personally say no, but I'd say the same thing about Ndidi and Partey, too

I find it amazing the number of people writing off Declan Rice. The lad is 21 and has racked up 90 professional appearances in the PL in central midfield. Also made his England debut at 20 and has 7 caps in a team who are one of the best in the world at International level.

For comparison, Scott McTominay is 23 and even Michael Carrick did not start playing regularly in the PL or internationally until he was 23/24

I think we ought to be seriously interested as a long-term replacement for Matic

Carrick was a PL regular at 19 and made his international debut at 20 in an England midfield that was so far better than the current one it is laughable to even compare.

McTominay is a decent but not great player who no club would spend big money on. Hardly a ringing endorsement, especially when we already have McTominay for free.

Not to mention breaking through slightly younger doesn’t make you a better player.

I think he will end up at centre back. I'm not convinced he's a good enough footballer to be an elite holding midfielder. Stones for instance has far more ability on the ball. It's not out of the question that he could develop but for the money West Ham would want, it isn't worth the gamble.

That is based on Stones as a centre back. Playing in centre midfield is completely different and I personally feel Stones would look nowhere near as good on the ball (not that I think he's anything special now anyway) if he was to play there.

No not as a rule it doesn’t but I think any player who is able to hold their own in central midfield in the PL and at International level as a teenager must have something going for them!

I watched Michael Carrick week in week out at Utd and even in his first season with us he was far from the finished article. I think people have re-written history a little where Carrick is concerned. It was only really from his later 20s that he really started to control a game.

We’ve got a young lad here in Declan Rice being totally written off because he’s not bossing games at 19/20 in a bang average side

He is still only 21. I also think he is being massively under rated on here. Reads the game well, hardly gives the ball away, very aware of what is going on around him, a wise head for a young player. Very much an unsung heroe teams need in my opinion.

On the same token, being English and in the premiership the fee of £70m is insane. That is the main reason I probably wouldnt sign him, there are so many talented young midfielders around Europe at the moment and they would all be considerably cheaper.

As I've said ad nauseam in this thread, you've just described a very good centre back - which I think that's what he is. If we're buying him to play CB, I would be all for this transfer, I just doubt he'd be up for that. He would get found out in a bigger team, which he actually has quite a few times, being asked to do too much in the England midfield.

I've been wondering if Ole is going to turn to buying a player like Rice, Phillips, or Lisandro Martinez - a player who can play as a hybrid CB/CDM - to try and strike a balance between playing a 352 and a 433 so we dont need to switch our formation around so often depending on who we play.

That type of midfielder who is able to drop down in to 2 man defensive partnership to create a back 3 and if not then bring the ball forward or shield to potentially give enough support for Pogba & Bruno Fernandes to play together could be useful.

Zakaria is another CDM capable of having the ability to cover CB and CM but can be too attacking minded to perfect a defensive minded role in a slightly overly attacking manner .

With a CDM's ability to drop back in to CB and take that space - we can have wicked variations to have the ability to really free up our ball playing CB's - let our defensive fullbacks like AWB & Shaw sit back with a CDM whilst they try to play a ball to initiate counter attacks . On the other side we can have the CB/CDM sit back and allow a fullback to go forward from each side leaving a completed back four.

For me he is another Schneiderlin he can do the basics of breaking up play very well but put him in a team that has usually more possession than the opposition and he is found out . For me playing for England against the lesser nation's he's shocking because he can't pass a football forward

Carrick was performing at a level way above Rice for Spurs. That season 05/06 he was incredible. I’ve seen nothing from Rice even close to anything Carrick produced in 05/06.

Eric Dier 2.0. Didn't want him and don't want Rice either. Not good enough technically and positionally for us. Overhyped due to his style and young age coming through.

On a free or for 20m, that would be fine i guess. But we would need to blow a huge chunk of our transfer budget on a limited player. Absolute no-go

Declan Rice will not be transferred for more than £25m.

People are anchored to prices from a forgotten era.

25m in the post corona era might be a lot as well depending on the budget of the top teams and football in general. If 25m is the old 70m, it doesn't make sense either way.

Exactly. The numbers being thrown around are just nutty.

If this lasts a year, I doubt many teams will break their transfer records for 10 years.

If we sign Declan Rise it would be Andy Carroll 2.0 situation.

This rumor should be as burried as the Sean Longstaff’s one.

like some posters have mentioned I would rather sign no one.

Overhyped, overrated and average.

If he was from Latvia no one would think anything of him.

Understand what you mean, but I think he is already a much better player than Scheiderlin who had literally a decent 6months at Southampton, always was a joke of a signing for me that one.

I dont argree, add in a great long range passer and you could be describing Michael Carrick. I also dont think you can compare international football with club football. Many a world class talent within the league has failed for England, not that I am saying I see him as that. I think forgetting the fee he would be a good signing, but you cant forget the fee and there are other players that are potentially better and a lot cheaper
