Declan Rice

SAF would have signed Declan Rice by now. Have to make our move in the Summer. I have been against blowing too much budget on one player but if we got Rice (and managed to renew Pogba) then what a midfield that would be with Bruno

It's crazy how many seem to know what Fergie would do.

Sir Alex would still have had Carrick playing if he were around now!
His investment in midfield was shocking. He wasnt signing DMs in 2008 never mind 2022

Yep. I was going to say that but expected to be greeted with a response about how his hands were tied in the transfer market. The last CM Fergie signed with close to the hype Rice is receiving was the late Liam Miller (RIP) who was supposedly the next Keane

Classic Ferguson signing, in the mould of Robson, Keane, Ince, Carrick etc...

Robson was signed by Ron Atkinson.

Regarding Rice, always liked him and he would be a great signing and even though the fee is sky high, I think he would provide value over the next decade....but, as part of a window I dont think it would be a great signing as in an ideal world I would say we really should be making an additional 4/5 signings and we may actually need to this summer with the number of players out of contract and others possibly wanting to leave, spending £100m odd on Rice makes that near impossible.

The only way I feel siging Rice this summer is a really good deal is if we were to make a big sale or two such as the likes of Maguire or Rashford who hold big value and have been poor for some time. I dont see that happening even thoug I wouldnt be adverse to it.

Thats why I feel the likes of Kamara for free, Tchuanemi for up to £50m may be better deals, not that I especially agree they are better signings in there own right. In an ideal world I would probably actually buy Bellingham and Rice but thats £180m+ and never happening

I’d bring in Rice and Kamara this summer then promote Mejbri and Garner which completely transforms our midfield, yes Rice will be expensive but there’s a lot of quality out there on free transfers this summer to fill problem positions like Mazraoui for right back with Laird coming back too or Rudiger for centre back and Dybala up top so Rice is doable for us money wise.

Yeah but are we smart enough to see that

People really still hype this guy? Dear me.

This. He's injury prone and blows hot and cold with his form.

Also, why would he join us now if not just for more money? Where would he fit into into this team? If the club sign this guy on a top salary they've learned nothing at all. I expect him to stay at Juventus for improved terms or stink up the place at some other PL club willing to take the risk. I hope it's not us

On a free transfer you don’t think it’d be a good deal no ? With Cavani and Martial off and Ronaldo 37 years old ? Would you rather we play McNeil or Hugill ? Or do you think we have a shot a Haaland ? Or we’re going to spend £350 million in the summer to fix our problem positions ?

Is Dybala the “new Messi” as every Argentinian forward is hyped to be ? No he isn’t but he’s a better player up top that Rashford and on a free it’s a no brainer. We need a right back, a centre back, two midfielders, a wide player AND a forward so if we could get Mazraoui, Rudiger, Kamara and Dybala all in on frees then it goes a massive way to fixing problems at value.

I seriously doubt his ability in playing as a lone striker.

Good player but still don't see where the hype is coming from. Considering he'd never go for anything less than a 100m, is he really near the quality that justifies that kind of money? Why exactly do people think he's great?

They have learnt nothing since those vile yankee leeches saddled us with debt for the last 16 years

I think its his natural positional play and his younger age whilst already being a good midfielder. He's developing very fast.

I'd value him at around 70 million though, he was at the 50m mark. If Rice wants to leave then it might mean running down a couple more years on his contract. I don't see us or anyone paying 100m, has to be 75m top end but that's the problem, for rich clubs even 75-80m is getting too much for one player, especially if needing to sign some more but 40-50m is not tempting for West Ham to sell.

He’s basically a live case of progression year in year out. He’s gone from West Ham youth talent to established first team regular, to then West Ham key player, and captain + England international; to now being genuinely one of the best midfielders in the league.

Is any no.6 worth the type of money they’d hold out for? Probably not. But it’s the biggest position of priority for us and he’s genuinely one of - if not the best - option out there.

This thread has been a fascinating read for me.

Declan has three more years on his contract at West Ham; the club has new investment from a multi billionaire from the Czech Republic, whose other half's family have double Abramovitch's wealth (before it gets confiscated) and everyone's expecting the current WHU owners to sell up next summer when the contractual disincentive linked to leasing the stadium disappears.

With a fair wind, West Ham could be top 4/6 over the next eighteen months - with another stadium capacity increase to 66,000 in the middle of London on prime London real estate at that point. Declan will have two years on his deal come the summer of 2023 and the club are refusing to include a release clause in any deal in ongoing discussions. That's the key date with his contract and with WHU future ownership.

The club has no need to sell now, is only two points below Manchester United - and as things stand, whilst I don't believe WHU will be in the CL , I'm not sure Manchester United will be playing CL football next year either. Arsenal look favourites for 4th.

irrespective of club football, the big date in Declan's calendar next season will be the World Cup. It seems a matter of time before he's England captain.

I think everyone at West Ham expects that he will want to be playing for an extremely competitive team in both the PL and CL in eighteen months' time. That means clubs who look like possible winners.

There aren't many clubs that fit that description.

I don't think he is capable of the sort of passing performance Matic did against Watford, You simply don't pay stupid money for a player unless he is something really special, he is good but not special...to be special you would need to be amazing on the ball in the modern game, on the ball Rice is decent nothing more.

Now that Chelsea is being sold by Abramowitz, they won't be able to bring Rice in and we'll have 1 less competitor on him.

I agree. He's working on his craft but naturally he's never going to be anything like Fabinho or Rodri.

He could play in a 4231 no doubt with a midfielder with a complete passing range like Pogba or Neves but ultimately I don't feel he's top draw in terms of Kante at Leicester, Fabinho at Liverpool or the emerging Rodri at City.

Maybe the world's best aren't trying to come to United right now and thats where he comes into the picture.

Tchouameni and Neves are two players I want to see at United. Making it happen in an optimal formation for the squad is another challenge altogether.

I'd love to see a midfield squad of Pogba, Tchouameni, Neves and McTominay. Rice could come into play if we don't sign Tchouameni but is Rice considerably better than McTominay?

Exactly

Say we blow our budget on Rice, then what? still gaping holes in the squad that need filling. We need to get away from this blowing our budget on a single player crap, it hasn't worked until now and it still won't work if we continue to do it

Dear lord, we have another Glaston on our hands. I hope caf has a better strategy this time to deal with this new Poundland Glaston before he runs riot and then runs away like his predecessor.

Number 1 target apparently. I hope we are spending the remainder on Tielemans or these guys are messing things up again :nervous:

Tbf next to Kamara would work too.

Yeah blowing the budget on Rice will just look idiotic and show we still haven't learnt to be smart with transfers

This is what happens when you fill these players head with nonsense. If you were picking top 10 midfielders in the world he wouldn't even make it on the list.

Yeah that’s a turn off tbh. Really wanted him but if that’s what he thinks right now about himself that he is already made it to the category of world class players being at West Ham after not even playing against the best players and best teams around the continent then I don’t know what sort of improvement we can expect from him in the future and what sort of attitude he would carry after making the move to united if we do sign him.

Rather this than that new slogan we was trying to push 3 years ago. Arrogant but humble.. I think it was?

Makes no sense.

Rather players believe they are the best and are willing to show it.

I doubt he truly believes that, Bissouma said something similar as well. Agent’s talk more than anything I’d say.

A relegated Centre Midfielder at Notts Forrest was arrogant enough to accept a big money move to Blackburn but then turned it down for slightly less money believing he could cut it with the best team in the league. His words, “I was ready for it”. If that’s not unforeseen arrogance from a ‘relegated CM’ I don’t know. So stop feeling so offending for players believing in their ability.

He is talking nonsense. He has the potential to go up a level with the right coaching and top tier / euro football.
With that, he needs a big club as much as they need him In order to try for best of the best status.

I watched the overlap with him, he slagged ordinary punters off as they don’t appreciate movement, space, tactics and position like ex pros. Was a bit of a redneck moment for him, in my opinion.

Don’t need to be so upset about my feelings mate. Also, you couldn’t pick a worst example, could you ? But you somehow did. Baller

First of all you should have stopped before it even entered your thought process to compare Roy keane and Declan rice. He was a proud lad Roy not arrogant. He was never arrogant about how good he was. That’s anti Roy keane.

Secondly, even after you decide to go with that, you should know there is a difference between I was ready for it said by Roy keane and I’m one of the best players in the world said by Declan rice. Roy saying I was ready for it is him saying about having the right attitude, work ethic and character combined with his footballing abilities that he was ready for united not that he thought he was world class at forest. The guy was the epitome of a working class lad who always put hard work over talent, humility over arrogance, grit and determination over I’m world class and established.

Thirdly, You should know what Roy used to say all the time that every time you step on a pitch you have to prove yourself to your fans to your manager to your team mates even in the training everyday , he was never this I’m already world class at forest type of player.

Having said that I like rice and rates him highly just didn’t like him saying what he said given he still hasn’t proved enough yet and hasn’t played or tested himself against some of the best players and best teams in a competition like CL to come out with such a statement. He is a fantastic player Declan but we have been burned too many times now over the years with players believing in their own hype or thinking they have made it.

I’m not a huge Rice fan but has anyone getting on his case actually read the full quotes?

“I feel like I am one of the established top players around the world. I am only 23, so I am still young — that’s what I mean in that sense — but in terms of my playing ability and the way I’ve performed consistently, I see myself as an established player now who’s got good experience and can play at any level if required.”

The headline makes it sound like he classes himself as one of the best players in the world. You can see from the following sentence he immediately tries to explain what he has said...he is an established player, not a young player anymore...and a top player capable of playing at the highest levels in world football. The kid has done it internationally and in the toughest league in the world and has not looked out of place against Liverpool or City...the two best teams in the world currently.

what is controversial? I personally think he will he found out but maybe not. Let’s not dampen his energy...if he does come here...we will be hoping he right.

Again it’s a weird trait to always want, what we would love as United arrogance in line with continued humbleness.

I want him to believe he’s the best if he comes here. As if we are where we should be. He’s going to have to go head to head with these top midfielders and I’d like he to believe he’s going to win the battle.

Two interesting quotes I’ve read from him this morning;

1 that his so called price tag of 100m is “crazy”

2nd thing that he wants to be playing CL as quickly as possible
