Declan Rice

Hard to judge. I mean, Rashford played like Ricky Lambert, and Grealish like Pereira.
This is a good point. Harry Kane was barely noticed. So if the majority of the players look terrible then its fair to ask questions of the manager.

But still, it would be insane to pay what West Ham want even if he ran the show tonight.

I'd rather have Fred. Just find a fecking CM who can distribute the ball better and pass it through the lines. What does he do better than someone like Schneiderlin?

Sign him and be sure that United wont play any sort of exciting football for the coming few years, so he should go to Chelsea and team up with Mason.

He is better at being English than Schneiderlin.

He is though, he’s a very good dribbler Scott and has a lovely ping on him. Two things Rice is wank at.
So what does he have on Scott on the ball?
Rice has a fantastic ping on him then too. In fact he completes more long passes per game, more key passes per game, has a higher pass completion, more passes per game and completes more dribbles per game. And he’s better defensively. He’s currently just a better player basically which is why he starts in midfield for England and Chelsea, United and City would all want him if the price wasn’t astronomical.

Chelsea did well to sign him this quick, they are always fast in the market

Agreed. Price quoted is just insane for "only" a good DM.

If I hadn’t drank this is what I would have written: He’s currently just a better player basically which is why he starts in midfield for England WITH Chelsea, United and City all wanting him if the price wasn’t astronomical.

Makes sense.

Chelsea don’t want him now Frank’s gone, Tuchel not interested by all accounts, not a chance would Pep go anywhere near him.

Ole loves a double pivot so maybe.

Of course that’s him, you think a top midfielder doesn’t grab that game by the scruff of the neck and start playing between the lines and forcing his team on because what? He managers demands he take the negative pass every time?

He played pretty similar the last game and got picked again.

If that performance wasn't what Southgate wanted you think he'll ne dropped then next game?

I'd mostly blame Southgate.

Even in the last game when the midfield sort of worked, Rice was still being used in a more negative, limited way than he is at West Ham. So it's no surprise that when the same midfield set-up isn't working, he also looks more negative and limited.

Which isn't to say he'd be playing like Pirlo otherwise, he's still a defence-first DM and will look too passive on his bad days.

But Southgate (according to himself) thinks playing Rice and Phillips together "lets" England play with four attackers, as if that's a luxury only afforded by playing two defensive midfielders. It's a terribly negative mindset to apply against a team like Scotland.

Yeah agree with all that.

Except Chelsea’s most reliable journo and resident Roman stooge Matt Law is saying Tuchel does want him. And City have been linked by Sam Lee - again very reliable for them - if Fernandinho leaves. I think you hugely underrate the lad.

Hi agent is linking him, doesn't mean the clubs will want him.

He just never impresses me, what is he good at? he's a centre back playing in midfield.

I think Southgate’s a cowardly manager, it’s all about avoiding defeat first.
I reckon he loves Rice like he loved playing with David Batty.

Agree. Batty was better than Rice though.

On nights like tonight Batty would have taken John McGinn to the cleaners. Disliked Batty a lot. But his ratting left more of a mark than what Rice does.

You know what Rice reminds me of? A less adventurous version of when Fergie would use Ronny Johnsen in midfield. Ronny was never in your face, just like Rice despite how big he is. He just did a job quietly and effectively.

Having seen John O'Shea play in centre midfield alongside Giggs for half a season, I can't really see how Rice is that much better in the middle than Sheasy was.

£80m? West Ham are having a laugh.

His agent is all over it, and you’ve made up the Sam Lee part.
Sam Lee isn’t linking him at all and anyone who’s watched a Pep team knows instantly that Rice wouldn’t be an option for him, never in a million years. I can’t see it for Tuchel either in fairness.
Lots of reports claiming Chelsea ran out of patience with Lampard due to his daft Rice obsession.
He’s limited as feck, like if you took a prime Matic and stripped him of his ball playing abilities.

:nervous:

I have to say the sight of O'Shea in midfield on a team sheet was enough to give me nightmares. He never looked quite right. It wasn't even that bad, but aesthetically he looked horrendous.

This is exactly right. Southgate is a safety first guy and it really shows when you play these ‘weaker’ teams. Due respect to Scotland but they shouldn’t be able to compete with England given the money, depth and players we have.

They didn’t only compete, they were every bit as good as us - that’s purely down to tactics and coaching because, sure as shit, we have better individual players.

Play that way against France, Belgium or Spain but not in games where you should be dominant. It is negative and it isn’t what fans expect.

If we sign this guy for £60M/70M/80M+ we deserve shooting. A boring player that constantly passes the ball to the side and back. Not a Utd player.

Said it before but his deep lying playmaking ability is non existent. Which is why I do not think he's the answer to United's CDM problem. Leagues behind a Fabinho for me.

Said it over and over. He’s another Schneiderlin waiting to happen. He’ll be sitting popping it around safe and he’ll drive everyone crazy. The thing is he could possibly develop into a fletcher but way too expensive. is his passing ever going to be adventurous enough when we have a lot of the ball? I have grave doubts. Locatelli is the way we should go. Half the price, a better passer and able to get forward

Top DMs are rare and hard to find - Rice is not one of them. Just because he can play there doesn't mean he's worth £70m.

Here's a tip - go to Brazil and look for one. Casemiro, Fernandinho, Fabinho, all the good ones lately have come from there - probably because the defensive midfielders can also pass the ball well

Posters still frothing at the mouth for a nothing player?? You guys must hate United to want a terrible player like him here. Every other top club encourages signing midfielders that are very comfortable on the ball while being good at other important aspects of midfield play. We on the other hand are looking for a Maticesque player minus the compusure and passing range. He comes here and I give up finally.

Nice post. We need a player with tenacity, work rate and passing ability. I promise it isnt that hard to find. Not everyday go for popular players that drive shirt sales.

Decent player but no one that conservative on the ball is worth the price tag. We could get someone with the same if not better defensive qualities for half the price. For 80 mil you want someone not just good defensively bit also capable of line-breaking passes, and Rice just isn't that.

Would Rice even drive shirt sales?

I'd argue a quality DM is actually quite hard to find, but I agree we should be focusing more on scouting a hidden gem rather than just going for the most obvious expensive option, especially when he's as limited as Rice.

Have to agree with many of the posts, this guy is just not what's needed, especially the money being mentioned.

The poster who said he's the equivalent of Ronny Johnson when moved into midfield on occasions makes a valid point. £80m to essentially be a centre back moved in DM role is madness.

I wouldn't mind but we can do that with 2 of our own defenders as lindelof and Tuanzebe could easily play the role. The latter played many games there for villa and utd and never really had a bad game.

Don’t think anyone’s claiming he’s a worldbeater
The fee WH want claims he is. Which is why we should walk away. Not that we are going full in, I can't see any credible links to rice. It's just fans discussing him, mostly.

He's extremely basic when on the ball. Absolutely not what we need. I wouldn't sign him for 40 million forget 80 million. Get midfielders who can pass the football for once.
