I agree with this, but the one thing that really makes me doubt myself is the Valdes signing. However, then I think that Valdes would probably have got a few starts this season, if the club knew that DDG was on the move.

You'd like to think that Woodward knows the value of DDG - as well as his marketability - and will have this situation under control.
There is nothing in that. Valdes used to work with LVG, they are on good terms. Valdes did his cruciate and clearly no other team wanted him - his move to Monaco flopped and they bought somebody else. Instead of wasting away somewhere else, he has joined us to keep fit and to play every now and again at a high standard. Lindegaard will be off in the summer, Valdes will be number 2 or leave as well.

Have they fully tried Keylor Navas while genuinely disregarding Casillas' political power though? I saw the guy play at the World Cup and he had all the attributes to be a beast in goals. For someone who was transfered for 10M euros after those performances, he has everything to be a good bargain for them.
Nah, they've pretty much neglected Navas. I'd like us to ask for him in exchange for De Gea, he could be great here.

Cech is surely the best option for them given he'll be actively looking for a new club

If they did go for Cech he could easily give them 3 or 4 more years of world class goalkeeping.

And Chelsea will prefer to sell him abroad if possible.

Losing De Gea will be a huge step backwards. Genuinely hard to think of a replacement good enough. Come on Woody, make him the best paid keeper in the world!

Cech would be the cheaper and smarter option for them. But it's Real so of course they'll take the harder route and push for DDG

At the moment there aren't many players I would say we need to keep at all costs but this guy is one. In fact probably the only indispensable member of the squad

Keeper? Let's just make him the best paid footballer in the world. He's worth every penny.

Our best player for two seasons in a row? I bet that hasn't happened since Ronaldo was here.

Probably the wrong thread but anyway...he's only on the bench (stupidly) for Spain tonight if anyone was interested.

RvN, Keane, Ronaldo and somebody I forget are the only ones who've done so, IIRC.

Not surprising. Del Bosque is a moron as shown at the last World Cup.

Why "only" MEN? I would have thought they have more chance of having inside sources than anyone else in the press / media.

Nah, MEN haven't been that great when it comes to United related stuff.

Yup. Makes no sense.
Well the longer the Spanish think Casillas is the better keeper, the better as far as we're concerned. Hopefully it's not just Del Bosque who has that opinion.

Agreed. Best summer business will be if we manage to somehow hang onto him.

Good point. Maybe Del Bosque is doing us a favor after all.

I'm pretty sure he's about the only person in the world who would start Casillas above De Gea. I'd rather De Gea pushed him out right now so that De Gea doesn't start feeling like he has to play in Spain for the big two to oust Casillas.

Delaney's latest on EPSN:

Real Madrid have taken the first steps in moves that will see goalkeeper Iker Casillas finally leave the club this summer after 18 years, sources have told ESPN FC.

Although Casillas has not yet begun negotiations with prospective new clubs, and a destination remains unknown, his representatives have already started discussions about the financial package he would receive on leaving the Bernabeu, sources say.

The expected exit would have huge implications for Manchester United, given Real Madrid's long-standing interest in United's Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, and the fact that he has not yet renewed his deal at Old Trafford.

Sources in Spain say two things right now are certain: "The mood around Real is very much that Casillas will leave this summer" -- and that the European champions want De Gea as his direct replacement this summer.

According to the site El Confidencial, the Spanish club are also very conscious of the delicate nature of the situation and don't want to be seen to be pushing Casillas out of the club, given his legendary status.

The crux, however, is that they ultimately need Casillas to go if they are to bring in De Gea to be their long-term No. 1. Casillas is aware of this, and it puts him in an advantageous bargaining position.

El Confidencial this week detailed some of the figures involved; Casillas could be set to receive an extra €3.5 million in bonuses, on top of the €22 million for a contract that is set to end in 2017.

On the other side, there is still no movement on De Gea's contract situation at Old Trafford, but there is a growing fear that he may leave this summer rather than in 2016.

Pretty obvious that de Gea joining Madrid will accelerate the progression of his international career. It's easy to say he should be patient, but he's 24 and has three caps. Joining Madrid eliminates Casillas immediately.

If we lose David, we will definitely need to strengthen that defence, he has saved us so many times this season. I would be extremely worried if we don't buy at least two CB's and a RB. I would not trust Smalling/Jones and even Rojo in front of either Valdes or a new goalkeeper.

The defence isn't as bad as you're making out, we've just played Spurs and Liverpool and De Gea has barely had to make a save in either game.

It is in terms of injuries though. You don't have to have two world class CBs to have a brilliant defense, decent players with a partnership can be up there with the best defenses around and we have decent defenders but the problem for us however is keeping them fit.

100%, which is why it is all about whether Madrid come calling, and nothing to do with whether we get top 4.

Fair point.

which is right - but prior to those two games dave the save was (and will win) player of the year , none of our defenders will. he's the most important player we have.

According to Marca, Real is looking for Leno from Leverkusen. Sign him up Perez, best young goalkeeper I have ever seen, no need to settle for Spain's number two :D

OP updated with latest results, the DDG Index has been drifting downward despite no solid news either way.

On the basis of what Woodwoodwood said last summer, I don't think we will accept the 'inevitability' of De Gea leaving. A lot of decisions are made around money, and I think that if we offer him the right deal there will be no reason for him to leave.

Ronaldo left United to be a superstar, which he could have had at either United or Madrid, but ultimately, he was going to make much more money in Spain than at United. I no longer feel that money is an issue for United, if we pay enough, he'll stay.

De Gea should be Spains number one now. He should have been at the last tournament for me. He's the best Spanish goalkeeper by far but their loss.
