Day 9: Cameroon vs Serbia | South Korea vs Ghana | Brazil vs Switzerland | Portugal vs Uruguay

Portugal and Brazil qualified. Today was a good day

Whats funny is that Portugal won't be rid of Santos anytime soon, he has delivered the bare minimum now, get past R16 and he will last a couple of tournaments after this.
The sad thing is he is rightfully the greatest coach in our history.

Though personally under Scolari was the most competitive we have been imo.

I was hoping for a video. I’m not necessarily saying he didn’t wave his arms. But how can we say so conclusively from this? That pic could have been from any moment in the game.
Actually, after the peno was given I was looking out for Ronaldo and instead they showed Santos on the bench sort of hiding his face. Make of that what you will but it looked like a guy that just got great news yet was thinking everything is about to fall apart

It may just be a wrong read but it ain't my problem either way so

Argh… id of thought inaki would have chose Spain and could have made their squad. Wonder what made him go for Ghana… obviously it’s easier to make their squad.
Good on him

He is Basque as well, so there's that

Portugal would be way better without Ronaldo. He is not a striker. He looks so lost out there sometime. His positioning is terrible. More than not he was playing left wing. And claiming that goal. That was typical of Ronaldo. More interested in himself then what his team mates give. And that is the biggest problem with Ronaldo. He is not a team player.

He got called up once by Spain in believe in 2016. He was never be going to be called up again, he is 28 years and his only chance to play at the world cup.

Ronaldo's cicle will only end in the Euro 2024 I think we will see the team growing without him in the qualifiers but he will still be around till the Euro.

I mean, statistically he is, but it was also, no disrespect to your nation, a fluke final in 2016.

This is only taken into consideration for red cards, not penalties. If he denied a goalscoring chance he would have been given a red in addition to the penalty. He wasn't. You can't give a penalty for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity and then not give a red card. It doesn't work like that.

Which means it's not an intentional handball. Then accidental handball rules go into effect. His hand was used as support to break the fall. As per the rules, which also use an image with this exact situation, it's not a penalty.

Serves him right for diving in scissor-style rather than staying on his feet to block what he thought was a shot. He didn’t have the angle for that kind of tackle.

So, did Ronaldo just spend a few minutes celebrating a goal he knew he did not score? Bruno continues to deliver for Portugal. Big performances by the United players today.

Uruguay deserved nothing from the game, they only started playing after going 1-0 down. Well done to Bruno, almost got a hat-trick, already has 2 assists from Ghana game, great tournament so far for him.

Ronaldo is playing better so far in WC than he did for us this season. Not saying his being great but doing okay. Think he could score couple more at this tournament, or at least another 1 anyways, from open play this time.

Pellistri was very good and glad for him.

To be fair to Ronnie it did skim along his hair so would have felt some sort of contact.

They would be better if they were freed of the Ronaldo handcuffs. Stick Eder back up front.
In the Euro final when the back-stabber went off injured Portugal had to resort to Plan B. It meant that they had to play like a team, sharing the ball, rather than feeding the ego. Immediately their game improved.

I don't follow SPurs. But is Bentancur always this good? Or is it because playing for NT, like some players do? @antohan

And Pellistri was so rapid and skillful. He couldn't be worse than Elanga or Bruno as RW.

Bentancur has always been a good all-round CM. I was staggered Juve let him go to Spurs for peanuts, let alone that they had a free go at him when our midfield was clearly all over the shop.

Most on here insisted he was average, but he seems to be doing just fine for them. Got a brace in the last game. While everyone played half-arsed thinking about injuries, he was busting a gut for Spurs as much as he was doing today.

Thought Ronaldo would have to go some to make a bigger tit of himself then he already has, but running round celebrating scoring a goal he didn't actually score was an admirable effort.

To be fair i can imagine other strikers doing the same thing, but he committed to it so fully it just came across as desperate.

Hoping Fernandes carries on doing well, partly because good on him, and partly because from a purely bitter point of view, it would be hilarious if in his last World Cup for Portugal, Ronaldo was overshadowed by a Man Utd player. Even more so when come January he can't find a club of similar stature that won't sit him on the bench even more than Ten Hag did.

Brazil have not been as impressive as their favourites tag suggests. After two rounds, I'd say France look the team to beat. Brazil, Spain and England have been decent if not unspectacular.

Yeah perhaps we are better off finishing second
