Day 5: Germany vs. Portugal

remember all the doom and gloom from the germans on here

god I wish England could be like the german national team
I know right!?

Pathetic really, now they're all celebrating.

Not really. It's the same as wanting Moyes gone, it's long term gain for short term gain, or so they feel. I'm in no position to tell if they are right or not since I don't watch enough Germany or know the players.

The fact Nani's in the team is indicative of the problem Portugal have. It doesn't seem to matter what has happened in the last two years, the same players will be picked.

The team has no cohesion, no plan apart from giving it to Ronaldo, and it's paying the price.

Germany, on the other hand, actually have a system and some tactics. Which helps.

Sums it up in a nutshell.

I read somewhere it's took Germany years of youth development to get to this point. Portugal haven't even started but relying on the same team and tactics they did 4 years ago. Bento doesn't have balls.

anyone who doesn't rate muller over rooney is a muppet
Muller has been one of the best players in the world on the last few years and he always delivers on big matches. He's so much better than Rooney. So, I agree with you.

They need carvalho on to act as a defensive mid/center back. Portugals midfield have been useless.

Muller's always annoyed whilst I've also always wanted us to sign him. Before we signed van Persie, I kinda couldn't stand him.

Pepe has spoiled it as a contest and probably harmed Portugal's chances of making knockout too. Mueller was right cnut to playact there but Pepe should have ignored him.

Yea if thats was clear then its going to a lot off penaltys ahead. Gotze used his hands just as much as the portugal player. When he lost the ball he threw himself.

I dont agree, Portuguese player pulled him. But lets agree we don't agree cause we can have this argument the whole day.

Germany always do this. Look brilliant in the groups, play well against a second rate side in the knockout round, and then get shown up to a top side in the latter stages.

So Argentina and England are second rate? We have beaten Argentina in the past 2 WC's in quarters, and England top16 2010.

To the other German posters on here:
Am I the only one who could read from Müllers lips what he said to Pepe? ( " Was willst du von mir? Was?"):lol:

I don't like Ronaldo but time and time again his team has let him down. He should change his nationality. :)

Yeah when Portugal win, Cristiano gets the credit. If they lose, it's the fault of the other 10.

playing kroos as #10 is brilliant. Such a underrated player for this position. Respect for Özil as well. Surprising good effort/performance for playing slightly out of position. All offensive players play really well. Höwedes looks a bit out of place; Durm might be the better choice. Lahm lost the ball a couple of times really stupid, but thats about all I can complain about. I really hope, that Löw sticks to this lineup. Solid defense with direct and fast attacks.

Ah well, on the bright side this will stop the collective hysterism in Portugal about the World Cup.

Can´t believe they renew Paulo Bento´s contract before the world cup and after that embarassing qualifying round where he was saved by Ronaldo and Moutinho´s heroics against Sweden. Paulo Bento along with Pepe must be the most stupid individuals on earth. I really dispise Paulo Bento.

Can't believe how Chiles is reacting to this. Well in Viera putting him in his place!

Ok, I´m just gonna come out and say it. I´m impressed and surprised. Back line looks way better than I anticipated. Both CBs rock solid and the FBs with some nice balance between defense and offense. Ronaldo a complete non factor so far. Good, fluid passing through the middle and also great rotating between the offensive three. Müller doing what Müller does. In all ways. Definitively our biggest goal threat right now. Just imagining having Reus also on the pitch....

So yeah, Löw´s tactics are spot on today. I still dislike the prick but he has set up the team well. Well done, lads.

I was one of the ones saying it wasn't a red but I hadn't seen the headbutt...thought the ref only meant the "accidental" hand to face as Pepe was shielding the ball.

Great first half, much more than I expected!
I slated Löw off a lot but he ultimately chose a very good line up! I thought we were going to see Podolski, Khedira, and possibly Klose starting, with Götze, Kroos on the bench. 4 center backs has worked out pretty well too.

Pleasant surprise!
Very happy with how the team has played!

Just imagine if Reus, Gündogan, etc were there.

I'm sorry there was no way that was a red. It was a stupid thing to do, but he was provoked by Muller's pathetic dive (where was the yellow for that, it was exactly what Busquets did vs Motta) and the 'headbutt' was the softest of these that I've seen.

If this was a red, was this? Torres had dived in the area, Rio and Evra both got in his face straight afterwards...

I hate Pepe as much as the next man but this was wrong from the ref.

The fact Nani's in the team is indicative of the problem Portugal have. It doesn't seem to matter what has happened in the last two years, the same players will be picked.

Why Nani shouldn't have been picked? He's their second best player of this generation.
