Day 4: Morocco vs Croatia | Germany vs Japan | Spain vs Costa Rica | Belgium vs Canada

Yessss for Asia, beating two of the favorites and deservedly so!

i am so proud right now ❤️

What a result. Especially given the way the game was going too, makes it even crazier than the Saudi win. Getting battered and then suddenly it clicks and you turn it around.

Germany vs Spain is now a must win for them.

That's completely on Flick - out thought. Lulled into absolute complacency, team just strolled around and then when Japan changed it up, had no way to up their energy and urgency. I have zero expectation to go win the cup but, didn't expect to be embarrassed again in the opening game like that.

Both 2014 finalist lost against Asian teams. Germany 2nd consecutive lost by Asian teams in WC??

Where's the poster that says it's shameful that this WC have more Asian countries than South American countries?

You have to admire the Japanese, best, most civil people on the planet. No shithousery or time wasting even after going up against the mighty Germany. Respect!

I knew Japan could score a few against this shaky defence, they just needed a little luck and to stay in the game. Love it!

Honestly, I wasn't actually that impressed with Germany throughout. They had a lot possession, but they didn't create many chances; that on top of having a poor forward line is not a great combination. They looked dodgy defensively throughout the game, also.

Fun game. Happy for Japan. Germany looked like they played with a 1-man (Rudiger) backline at times. They're nowhere near clinical enough upfront to get away with that. Musiala, even though he missed a couple of chances, was excellent.

 :smirk: I meant nobody expected Croatia or England to get to the semi in 2018. Considering the quality of England entering this tournament you woudn't have expected them to get to the semi or final this year either but nobody looks that good. Even teams that have played well (like France/England) have looked pretty shaky at the back!
England have the most expensive squad on the tournament and have had very good results in the last 5 years. They're one of the favorites, for sure.

Great game. Always great to see Germany lose. Beautiful scenes.

Germany should play with as many Bayern players as possible and complement with some Bayern II players

That was so unnecessary. We wasted so many good chances, Flick subbed of our control with Gündogan and Musiala and Süle and Schlotterbeck both are equally to blame for the 2nd goal.

Why? They both got knocked out early last time out as well. European teams are massively overrated as a result of their "dominance".

The only reason they have been "dominant" is there are only two non-European teams that can win, one of them typically being grossly mismanaged, so chances are one of the European sides is hitting their sweetspot just in time.

So how is European dominance overrated then? Genuinely curious.

2006 All European final, All European semi finals
2010 All European final, 3/4 semi finalists
2014 European winner
2018 All European final, All European semi finals, 6/8 European Quarter finalists

That’s about as dominant as it gets in World Cup terms. Two of the last 4 world cups it’s been only European teams in the semis. The depth in Europe is ridiculous tbf.

Of the last 32 quarter finalists, 19 have been European, 11 South American of which 7 have been Argentina and Brazil, 1 Central American, and 1 African. Dominance.

And their fans tidy the stadium when they leave too. They even did it on the opening game when Japan weren’t even playing!

Germany with the old long ball tactic.

Outplayed and outran. No idea what Neuer was at on the second, should have closed that angle down quicker.

Japenese keeper made a big error conceding the penalty, but made up for it 2nd half with some good stops. Neuer made a great stop 2nd half but was guilty on their 2nd goal.

The first touch of the Japanese player who scored the 2nd was glorious.Neuer won’t like seeing the replay of that !
Japs have always been good technically and do the basics well. It makes them tricky opponents despite other limitations they might have.
Hipsters got shown up today. :D

That was terrible from Flick.

He took Muller and Gundogan off before the Japanese goals and then Muisala with 20 minutes still to go, he killed any chance for the Germans to win.

Great 2nd half from Japan. The better team performance deservedly won. Germany need a 2nd decent defender next to Rüdiger.

Japan have been great.

Germany are so flaccid, same as Argentina. have to wonder if the mid-season world cup is taking its toll on the players in the big leagues. Or maybe they're both just crap.

Hasn’t affected England or France so far. Gotta give Japan and KSA their credit.

Not a great look for the sport when you get several boring goaless draws in succession at the flagship event

Only 3 so far but when you get shock results like yesterday’s Saudi Arabia’s one against Argentina and now the Japanese getting one against Germany, that makes up for those boring nil nils.
