It has everything to do with Southgate. The quality of individual players in this England team is up there with the likes of Portugal, France, Germany and Spain. A good manager would let this team click. They are painfully easy to read.

Southgate needs to change something with this team. So constrained and lacking control like every England team at a major tournament. Bringing Gallagher on while trying to hang on against Serbia just screams Hodgson.

Gallagher is best further forward where he can chase stuff down and cause transitions.
Keeping it simple and tidy further back in midfield is not something he is very good at.
Think Eze would have done more than Foden has
Cause Guardiola has a habit of making players look brilliant in his system, see how Sterling and Sane fell off after they left. Foden must be shitting himself at the rumours Guardiola's leaving next summer.
The weird thing is these teams seem to give England more respect than they deserve and rarely go for the throat.
