Day 19: Belgium vs. United States

Feel bad for the US. Another match marred by awful officiating. The referee was from Algeria ffs, what high class football he must watch regularly in the domestic league.

He and his linesmen were woefully out of their depth. Embarrassing by FIFA.

until people start saying "the us can be proud, they should good technique and kept the ball well while constructing thoughtful attacks" instead of "the us can be proud, the ran and showed determination"...they won't go anywhere...

note - this is the same thing that people like saying about all anglo-countries.

when the adjectives and adverbs change, then you know you are turning a corner in football

One of the matches of the tournament so far, along with Germany Algeria and another that I can't remember now.
the dutch stripping spain down and flipping them over?

No upsets. Despite all the drama it's the usual suspects in the quarters. Except for Costa Rica I guess

Why does anyone care that most Americans don't like football? I couldn't give a feck if a Yank doesn't find it his cup of tea. This desperate seek of approval has to stop!

I agree with you.. But the reason why the want it to be huge is cuz we are the biggest nation in the world??? and it has crazy potential of growth..

For me the fun's gone as I wanted an underdog to go through and the US were a fun one. No team's stood out for me.

The USA defended really well, but Belgium definitely deserved to win and glad they did. Scoreline would've been totally different if Howard wasn't playing.

2nd best match of the tournament, just behind the Brazil and Chile game. Had USA equalized and taken it to penalties, it would have taken this game to legendary status. The Mericans showed heart, respect.

"Straight off the training ground"

Well where else would it have come from Shearer you birdbrain.

USA were incredible. The passion, hunger, desire and never say die attitude, just amazing. Makes you wonder if only the England team could show half of what USA did.

If the U.S.A. had some gifted technical midfield players this game could've been so much different. Bradley and Jones had a lot of possession in advanced areas and did pretty much nothing with it. They've got the organisation and the energy but not the talent, not yet anyway. Still, looking at England where we've got the talent but no tactical discipline and nothing approaching a proper game plan for our opponents, who's worse off at this moment?

It is what Jack Wilshere says.

Thank feck for that. For a while I was scared the US were going to get through and I'd have put up with their nauseous bravado for another round.

WUM I am an American and I thought they damn well played pretty well the whole tournament. I am a huge fan of Utd, the EPL and English ale. Perhaps you should direct your anger and a vastly underachieving England squad instead of ranting on an overachieving USA squad.
This. Exactly this. And the wankfest from the BBC.

That was comical, Belgium had 32 shots after 90 and more than 20 on goal and U.S had 4 with 3 on goal. I don't think I've ever seen that. Borderline embarrassing. Best part is the US could have stole it at the end. Thankfully Belgium went through in the end, would have been a travesty had US gone through. Tbf to them they picked it up in second half of ET though.

Yeah, I'm happy they gone through, I want to see the best vs the best in the further stages.

I don't know what you are smoking but Belgium deserved to win.

Yeah my mate just texted me "they never give up despite technical deficiencies. They're the embodiment of Rocky Balboa."

Belgium = Apollo Creed.

It kind of annoys me that people praise the USA and criticise Greece, even though they both rely on passion, determination and team spirit to make up for the lack of great players.

lol @ people saying USA deserved better. Take a look at the stats, for 90 percent of the game they barely came out of their own half.

Howard rescued them time and time again.

Deceptive scoreline for sure. If it hadn't been for Tim Howard's heroics and Belgium's terrible finishing, the yanks could've been on the wrong end of serious drubbing here.

Gutted. Belgium was better for sure. US soccer needs to find someone that can possess the damn ball. I like some of the young players and what JK is bringing. The team made it further than I thought imaginable in this tournament. So bummed Wondolowski didn't bury that point blank shot.....

Cracking game, my favourite so far. USA showed some great fighting spirit, but fair result in the end. Belgium set up nicely into the latter stages with both Origi and a rejuvenated Lukaku. Oh and Felling is a terrible, terrible player. Get rid, please LVG.

Credit to Lineker. He went a whole 10 minutes without making a condescending joke about soccer and its popularity in the USA.

Comical in what sense? Like how comical it was when Utd outshot Le Arse 19-0 and lost on penalties in a cup final?
