Day 19: Argentina vs. Switzerland

Robbie Savage trying to make up for his lack of insight by sounding outraged about everything

Anyone hear that stat for how many times Di Maria's lost the ball in this game?

Most of the most self centred performances I've seen from a player.

I could have sworn he was much better against Nigeria. Then I watched the replay. Nope.

What an awful, awful game so far. Di Maria has been so frustrating, even more than any Nani performances. :wenger:

Preposterous.

An excellent example of how the wrong tactics/formation can turn a world class player into nothing at all.

Good to keep in mind when rating our players after that debacle last season.

Argentina are the worst team left in the tournament, and Messi has basically been a one man team. If he wins the World Cup for them this time round it will eclipse what Maradona did, because this side look absoloutely hopeless without him.
This. Even on paper, this Argentinian team is worse then most other eliminated "top" nations. Without Aguero, even more so.

both most fancied teams, are one man teams , mark Messi and Neymar out of the game and both are very ordinary.

Switzerland have run 9km more than Argentina overall and 22km (!) more without the ball, so I'd be shocked if they manage to last the 120 without letting Messi score one or get an assist from a set piece.

Worst part is I have to agree with him. He gets pretty upset whenever I correct him, so I have to pic and choose my battles carefully.

I did try suggesting the names of Robben and Messi but he explained to me that neither of them knew how to use the full width of the field like Fred. He used to be a youth soccer coach for his daughter's u8 team, so he notices tactical nuances that escape the layman (like me). I conceded the point and praised him for his insight.

Kill me now.
Lol how did he even pick Fred on the Brazil team? He's the worst Brazilian player I've seen on the NT (Been watching the WC since 1982).

If he had said Neymar at least he'd mentioned a dynamic player, but freakin' Fred.

May God have mercy on your soul.

Pm me his phone number and I'll explain how might be the worst striker in the tournament.

 This is some slapstick comedy going on out here. All that's missing is the music

This World Cup is so wide open. Such a shame England produced their usual bottle job. Could've gone far with a better manager.

Lol. I have no idea.

Half of what Switzerland ran more is probably the amount Messi usually runs less than his opponents. ;)

Eh?

Messi, Aguero, Higuain, Lavezzi, Mascherano, Gago, Zabaleta, Di Maria... with a solid supporting cast. How is this team worse than that of the USA, Costa Rica, Brazil, or even Columbia?

Anyone noticed no-one talks to Messi? They all give him a quick pat on the head as if to say, "come on Leo, you've got this", but he just sits there in complete silence. It obviously works for him so fair play, but he's a rubbish captain. I'm all for leading by example by letting your football do the talking but if you don't actually communicate at all, you're setting completely the wrong example. They don't look like a harmonious team at all. That's the most obvious difference between him and Diego.

Yeah I noticed that and agree completely. If he wasn't captain, I doubt it would have an impact on his performance and if he scores, it would have the same boost for morale whether he is captain or not - so why not just have someone captain who can motivate and lead the rest of the team outside of Messi's goals/performance, or for times when they really need it like the example you've given.

The worst game in this round. At least Costa Rica vs Greece had some drama. Only the penalties will save this game

Just look how far a well past his best Maradona got Argentina in 90. Mainly down to his leadership qualities.

Well, if you don't card someone for pulling the other player down with his arms I don't know how you're supposed to have a football game out there.

Argentina remind me of us last season in some ways.
