Day 19: Argentina vs. Switzerland

The more and more of this tournament I watch, the more and more it looks like Colombia might actually win it. I don't think they will but they certainly should.

Out the teams so far, only Colombia, Netherlands and France have really convinced and not shown any real weaknesses.

Di Maria has been useless all tournament... He'll probably be involved in Argentina's winner somehow in extra time.

its weird how all the 'big' teams have struggled against the 'weaker' sides

Is his name actually pronounced Cher or is it just Jonathan Pearce being Jonathan Pearce?

Great effort from the Swiss, simply awful from Argentina. Messi aside most of them look like they're only seeing a football for the first time today.

Di Maria has been horrid, only playing for himself his the over dribbling, constant shooting into crowds and ridiculous attempts at tricks.

They are supposed to have the best attack in the WC.

they have Messi so that's probably the main reason people still believe this, but Aguero and Higuain are horrendous and Di Maria is pretty bad too. and it's not just this game, they were poor in every single game so far. there's just no balance in their team.

Nothing weird about it really. Globally the lesser countries have been catching up in coaching methods. Its great, the sport is now being opened up more and its not going to be the same 4-5 teams winning it.

Cashed out on Messi top scorer, just under tripled my money despite being at the 75th minute.....but if he doesn't score in this ET, pretty sure he'll be 3 or 4/1 so I can lump half back on for the same overall returns minus £5 free bets every time he scores.

No bets on games today, woke up too late....Germany messed up my -1 accy.

Feel sory for Messi, Di Maria's the only other decent player in that side and he's playing like a pub league player in the second half. Higuain should be benched after this.

And it goes to extra-time again. The 4th match in the knock-out stage which goes to extra-time. Surely this has to be some kind of record at the World Cup?

Lawro is class compared to them itv muppets aka clarke, matterface, townsend etc

 Poor sod.

Worst part is I have to agree with him. He gets pretty upset whenever I correct him, so I have to pic and choose my battles carefully.

I did try suggesting the names of Robben and Messi but he explained to me that neither of them knew how to use the full width of the field like Fred. He used to be a youth soccer coach for his daughter's u8 team, so he notices tactical nuances that escape the layman (like me). I conceded the point and praised him for his insight.

Kill me now.

Both of these are fecking rancid. Wouldn't be surprised to see Brazil and Argentina slither their way into the final though.

Higuain is the worst of the supposed 'quality' forwards that I've seen.

If Switzerland beats Argentina, it will be their first quarter-final in the World Cup since 1954. Quite an achievement I must say.

Anyone noticed no-one talks to Messi? They all give him a quick pat on the head as if to say, "come on Leo, you've got this", but he just sits there in complete silence. It obviously works for him so fair play, but he's a rubbish captain. I'm all for leading by example by letting your football do the talking but if you don't actually communicate at all, you're setting completely the wrong example. They don't look like a harmonious team at all. That's the most obvious difference between him and Diego.

Wear headphones at your desk if possible. The only way you'll leave with your sanity intact

Anyone hear that stat for how many times Di Maria's lost the ball in this game?

Most of the most self centred performances I've seen from a player.

Argentina are the worst team left in the tournament, and Messi has basically been a one man team. If he wins the World Cup for them this time round it will eclipse what Maradona did, because this side look absoloutely hopeless without him.

What an awful, awful game so far. Di Maria has been so frustrating, even more than any Nani performances. :wenger:
