Day 17: Morocco vs Spain | Portugal vs Switzerland (Last 16 7&8)

I've long argued that the opposition tactics are what make Spain games boring, and again, it's true here but I think Spain's tactics also contribute to a frustrating game. They're too conservative with their passing. It'd be nice to see one of their players get on the ball and drive at defenders, to shift it and shoot. Just mix it up a little.

I mean, teams park the bus v Man City or v that prime Barcelona team but their games were never as boring as Spain games always seem to be.

Someone said that they are joyless and it seems spot on. They are very mechanical, technically impressive but lack flair and enthusiasm.

Morata is only 30? WHAT? Hes been around for ages. Thought he would be 34 or something especially the way he moves.

Agree completely. I think the main reason is them simply lacking quality to attack. No top quality upfront, and no physicality and drive from midfield. But at least they try to play football.

Do they? Spain generally just epitomise keepball most of the time and the only way to really counter it is to shut up shop and hope for the counter or overwhelm them. The latter is suicide if you have a vastly inferior team. It's a philosophy built on the notion of if you have the ball, the opponent doesn't. They have a lot of technical ability and they purposely use it to suffocate the opposition and the game.

Compared to the strikers we've bought and been heavily linked to in the past few years he's actually a spring chicken.

Spain have the ball in the final third and all of Moroccos players are behind the ball.

You could throw a net over them

I don't see what so special about Gavi. He makes so many fouls. So clumsy. He is a mini Gattuso

I can’t believe people in this thread blaming Morocco for Spains boring football. I watched a passage of play in which 5 Spanish players completed around 20 passes close to the halfway line only to move the ball 15 yards sideways. In the whole passage of play I didn’t see one of them even look forward for a passing option, they are just happy padding their stats and doing their training drills. It is joyless, soulless crap and it needs to stop. They are a far more technically gifted side, play with tempo and impose themselves and they can blow Morocco away by 3 or 4 goals but they actually don’t seem to care about attacking. It is mind blowing in its dullness.

I suppose we should look forward to extra time cause ain't none of these teams want to score

Trying to win the ball off Spain isn't wise thoug, thats what they want you to do
OK, so teams are turtling up because they're afraid. Yet Spain are to blame for game being one sided and cagey. It makes no sense. It would be difficult for any team to break this kind of bus, and Spain simply don't have enough quality.

Morocco have lost any ability to attack in the 2nd half.
I hope they are not hanging on for a pen shoot out....that could go very badly

The best bit about the Spanish approach here is that they're totally going to start lumping it with 5 minutes left.

Replay shows that should have been a foul. Morocco getting away with a few things

Spain 's antifootball ball suffocation stuff being heralded as something to be admired is a great joke.

Hakimi looks a shadow of the player he once was. I know he's just come back from injury recently but he's been one of Morocco's worst players in the games I've watched in the World Cup.
