Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

I was 10 in 2000. I did watch but probably don’t remember it very clearly! Still, worst German side for 2 decades then! Which is still 2 generations in football terms!

Fair enough. Positve thing might be that we build something very competent as result of that shitshow (and then became complacent again...), so maybe history repeats itself.

Southgate really isn’t going for this. Literally trying to fluff a goal to win. Can’t be playing for penalties. Even he isn’t that mad is he

germany's chance to score increasing by a decentt amount with gnabry on and werner off.

This feels like a friendly before the tournament. Hope the Grealish sub steps things up a gear.

Always an interesting debate - is it just luck of the draw in terms of talent at that one time, or is there more to it. Usually a combo of both id imagine

Dreadful so far. They can't be serious about offering Southgate a new contract.

That saka sub would have happened regardless of how he played today. Pre planned because it’s the easy decision.

Our best player so far goes off

probably Maguire or Pickford are the best one so far.

You could have subbed off everyone from Sterling, Kane or Saka. With this defensive tactics it's quite difficult for them anyway.

He never was. Just because we have got over the penalty shootout jinx doesn't mean we have to keep landing in them.

Get Rashford and Grealish on for saka and Kane, switch sterling to the right, rashford on the left and grealish drop bit deeper as no. 10

It has to be said that Germany have been pretty shite to watch except for Havertz

Luck is always a factor, but the strong talents we brought up had a lot to do with systematic changes.

Yep.

It's all about keeping his job for Southgate. He could care less if he bores us to tears playing shamefully negative football, at a time when England are experiencing a golden generation of attacking talent.

England could have lost this game 5-0 and Southgate would still keep his job. FA have been utter morons to have briefed the media prior to this game that they would be extending Southgate's contract.

Gareth is desperate to avoid scoring isn't he, it's like the world decided de Boer was the worst coach and Gareth said hold my beer.

He wants one of the lads to miss a penalty so everyone forgets about his piss poor penalty. Trying to erase his own shitness from our memories.

Genuinely can't believe just how spineless Southgate has us looking, and my expectations were on the floor to begin with.
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
