Day 14: Mexico vs Sweden, South Korea vs Germany, Serbia vs Brazil, Switzerland vs Costa Rica

I bet Neymar has lost the ball at least twice as much as any other player in the tournament

It really hasnt. There have been some low quality matches of course like I'm every tournament, plenty of high quality ones too though. Maybe you're just complaining that there isnt a single clear cut favourite? I dunno. There has been plenty of quality on display, quality goals, dramatic moments, upsets with well drilled smaller teams, dominant performances from big sides... pretty much everything you would want.

No there hasn't. There has been not one team looking world class as there have been in previous world cups. I want 4 sides looking like world beaters not this incarnation of cloggers.

If they don't start making some runs and putting some efforts, it won't matter once they play a better tactical team.

The problem is that the better tactical teams have glaring weaknesses of their own. I would favor Belgium (if they sort their mentality out), France and Spain (if the former find a better solution in attack and if the latter cut out lazy mistakes) in a matchup later in the tournament though.

Spain are better.
I would refer you to Morocco's first goal in their last match.

They're better on the ball than any other team in the tournament. That includes the whiny Neymar.
They really arent. What is in Brazils favor is that they are decent and somewhat organized defensively (nothing special, but solid) while have a few players who can score out of nothing like Coutinho or Neymar. Goes a long way being functional.

Spain are far better in possession and in creating. They're just a mess defensively. France is pretty much the same as Brazil but with less quality in attacking individuals.

Belgium and England are hard to judge because of how weak Panama and Tunisia are.

Surely that bastard ref is not giving them a penalty? Wasn't he offside?

Neymar reminds me of the kid at school who was good at football and just never passed. Always fecked it up. Annoying little shit.

Brazil seem solid to me; they have a good balance. Nothing spectacular about them, but they have some tremendous players who are capable of bailing them out when they're not playing particularly great.

i actually quite like Brazil. But feck Neymar.

Only watched Savic for these games but his fitness for a young player is not impressive. Serie A is a slow paced league, would need to upgrade his engine just for a start to fit the PL game. Based on this match alone it does not look as if he has the game to play in a deeper, more play-making role, Matic has had to be the one to try to force the game, which he generally does not like to do, and Savic has been a major problem defensively, especially when Brazil were countering, gets picked off, his size works against him there, and he does not have the Matic brain to control space.

Too early for him to make a big move I would say, needs a couple of years to improve and progress his game before he takes that step.

That proves nothing. It was just a defensive mistake rather than a lack of ability in the ball. One goal concede proves nothing.

That's your opinion. I'm not saying that Spain are bad on the ball but they have lacked the true authority on the ball that they've had in previous tournaments. And that goal was due to faulty possession play, it wasn't a defensive blunder because Morocco didn't have the ball. 2010 Spain would not have conceded possession like that leading to a goal.

It's the group stage. You're romanticizing previous world cups. Germany didnt look like a world class team at the last WC apart from when they made Brazil look like children because of amateurish tactics and them collapsing, while Argentina took every game to extra time. Spain in 2010 were awful to watch for the most part and was just possession with no cutting edge. France in 2006 barely made it out of their group and Italy barely made it past Australia in the knockout stage. The list goes on. World cup teams are never "World Class" from start to finish. They have maybe 1 stand out performance the entire tournament that sticks with people and that's it. Or the narrative for the winners get the previous games rewritten. All you can ask for is exciting games and moments of quality and dramatic moments. You arent going to see peak Pep Guardiola football at the World Cup because that takes loads of time to build that cant be reached with international football.

Nonsense. The quality has been crap overall. Way worse than usual.

How come?
I'm to lazy to look it up. :D

Second placed team will face Switzerland/Sweden in the quarters.

First placed team will play Brazil/Mexico in the quarters.

Whoever finishes second will have as easy of a run to the WC semifinals as possible. It will depend a bit on where Colombia finishes too though, they're very good.

God, Germany and Brazil are so dire. The big difference is that Brazil has WC players who can make the difference.

This World Cup is absolutely bonkers. Nothing is sacred and almost anyone can beat anyone. Crazy

I think I heard Martinez is resting basically everyone, wonder if Southgate will do the same.

I think both teams should actively try to lose the game, it has even more potential to make for a funny game because if they draw then the team with less yellow cards finishes first. We might see them get yellow cards on purpose so they can go to the easiest part of the draw

Definitely a very weird situation
