David Villa to New York City FC

Definitely being talked up by Fox Sports et al.

Wouldn't be surprised if it was bollocks in the end, but still would be awesome to see

Reyna, DoF of NYCFC has confirmed he'll play for another club in the meantime, but it won't be MCFC.

Would love to see him down here in Melbourne, but even in his current state he'd be about 5 classes above this league.

Word has it they have offered Xavi a 3 year contract also, Do people think this is some scheme by Man City to avoid financial fair play / weaken european opposition or actually just a legit business/marketing venture? will they use NYCFC as a feeder team to loan players to them?

If they are using NYCFC as a entity used to loan world class players to themselves do you see FIFA allowing this? or is there nothing they can do?

Very nice. Will enjoy seeing how they go next season

No respected player in their prime will go to the US at this point though, they'll keep collecting players like Villa and Lampard who are nearly past it in terms of top flight football to try and raise their profile in the US. They might well succeed at that too, they have the money and co-operation with Yankees could be beneficial to them too.

I think going to the US would do wonders for some player's profile, earnings and legacy. Look at Nani for example. He's got plenty of years left in his legs theoretically, he'd get a huge DP contract, he'd be the league's no. 1 superstar with a ton of marketing deals thrown his way. Whereas if he goes to Juve/wherever he'll be a rotation player most likely. The MLS is an underrated league project, I look forward to it growing. I think within 30/40 years it'll be up there with the best.

It has moved from getting washed up players well past their best from European top leagues to players who have something left in the tank - Defoe could have well stayed another 2-3 years in Premier League and get games, Bradley could have stayed in Italy and play and Villa would probably still find teams who would have him in their first XI for a couple of years in Spain too.

Although it was never going to be a surprise as he will hardly be a Spain international in semi-retirement, but he has now said that his games in Brazil will be his last ones for Spain.

His goal record for Spain will probably not be broken for years to come.

To put it simply, no.

Nice. Looks like I'm going to attend my first A League game then

I'm sad that Villa is coming to the end of his career. When he was at Valencia and during his early years at Barcelona he was one of my favourite players. Fantastic footballer who's had a wonderful career, good luck to him in Australia and America.
