David Villa to New York City FC

He has won, scored and performed in pretty much every major tournament. Top scorer in a World Cup and a European Cup. Has scored a Champions League final wonder goal. Must be one of the most underrated strikers of the past decade.

There was a goal he scored vs Casillas in a Classico, an amazing shot.
This goal...

He looked spent as a top level footballer in the Athleticos final 2 games of the season, reminded me of Torres

For real?

I'm a big fan of his fan, but he's old & we have RvP, Rooney & Welbeck. I'd rather we give a youngster (Henriquez/Wilson/Keane) that 4th spot.

Especially if LvG intends on playing 1 CF.

Yeah well I'd rather give Adnan that 4th spot, since he played as a striker in the reserves and is the most talented young one. But as an impact sub in the tradition of Ole, Chicharito or even Owen I would definitely like David Villa, you know how good he is. Plus young boys like Henriquez or Wilson need to play every week until they've played at least 100 matches professionally, don't think it will be good for their development to be benched a lot. And I don't know if they're suited for that specific impact sub role.

Whereas Villa could be suited for it, and he would be a better option for us on the left side than Young and Welbeck were this season too, probably.

I know it's never going to happen, but man what a great finisher Villa was and still is.

Finally, an opportunity for me to be pedantic about language! As an American speaker who plays soccer & baseball, I can confirm that we refer to it simply as "Yankee Stadium", no "the" needed.

As in: Manchester City will attempt to circumvent Financial Fair Play by overpaying old stars and putting them out to pasture in Yankee Stadium.
Would it not still be correct to use the word 'the' beforehand though, or maybe more accurately it just wouldn't be incorrect to use it - City's stadium is just called Etihad Stadium, but in that sentence you'd still say 'they'll be playing at the Etihad Stadium'.

It makes me wish United invested money and create an affiliation with David Beckham's new franchise in Miami (especially with the Glazers' strong presence in Florida). You never know; it may open a door for players to come back and play on loan in Europe during winter (should we need one).

MLS has a foreign player cap of 3, so it's not like they can stockpile has beens

I know money talks and all that nonsense but I am a little surprised by this, how long was his contract at Atletico one year?

That would have made a lot of sense.

What sort of payday can he expect? I thought MLS had a salary cap?

A foreign player cap or a 'key player', or whatever its called, cap?

I think they do have a foreign player cap but I don't think its 3 players

In the 2nd half of the season he didn't play as much as he probably wanted at Atletico, though he still got enough minutes. But was often taken off after 60 minutes or so.
Then when Costa started picking up injuries in April and May Villa played more.

Regarding money, he is not greedy at all, in fact he is very loyal. He moved to Barca in 2010 when he was already 28, which is old for a top player in regards to moving, as usually younger players jump at the first opportunity to join a big club.

In 2008 literally every big club in Europe wanted him, including the big 2 in Spain. For his family he wanted to stay in Spain, so RM and Barca were the only possibilities. But he and Valencia decided they were not selling in 2008, instead Villa signed a 6 (!!!) year contract extension with Valencia. This way when he eventually moved to Barca in 2010 Barca had to pay huge transfer fee for a 28 year old. Valencia even said in their official statement announcing his sale that at no point did Villa put pressure on them to sell him.

So now with 32 he probably thinks it's time to move for money/abroad. He has already won everything at club and international level, so no point to go for trophies while at the same time not playing that much, as he won't be first choice with 32 at a top club.

An absolute legend, glad he is going to the WC, too!

So how does this new franchise thing work then? Had a Google, and NYCFC don't even have a team of players yet?

Do they just draft in en masse over this window and the winter one?

Just confirmed via Atletico that he is leaving and the offer was immense for him and his family.

Yes. MLS does have a salary cap but designated players which Villa and Lampard fall under make considerably more than the rest of the roster. Their salary judging by Beckham's La Galaxy contract and Henry's Red Bull contract will be in the 4.5 to 5 million dollars range per season.

Its going to be higher than that. Defoe and Michael Bradley are on about 6.5 million dollars a season at Toronto FC.

Damnnn I didn't realize how much MLS salaries are increasing. They're definitely getting the 6-7 million range next season then. That's pretty good money and they will be living and playing in the greatest city.

He's going to kill it in MLS. MLS teams are very lopsided in terms of personnel. There are some pretty decent players interspersed with low-paid players. Robbie Keane eats those poor guys alive, and Villa will too.

The talk here in the Oz media is that Villa could be on his way here on loan to the other club City have bought here, Melbourne Heart (or soon to be, Melbourne City), purely as a means to keep fit until the MLS season kicks off.

Would be fecking immense.

Wow are City going to make their entire affiliated teams play in that sky blue? :/

Says it all when Bradley Wright-Phillips is the top scorer.

Starting a team from scratch I'd have been surprised to see them play in anything other than light blue. It makes sense.

I think the FA over in Australia aren't too keen on Melbourne Heart being changed to light blue, though.

One of the best strikers ive ever seen. That shirt is shit.

Where is he going to play for the next half a year?
