David Villa to New York City FC

Still could have offered a lot at the highest level but I guess money talks, shame.

I don't think it's a strange decision at all. Gets a shitload of money. Gets a huge amount of exposure in NY. Should find the MLS an easy league to score in...makes perfect sense to me.

Great player. Madrid were after him for years when he was at Valencia and came close to signing him a few times. He is a player that I was hoping Madrid would sign for years and I am sickened that we never got him. For me he was the best striker in the world at his peak. One of my favourite players that doesn't play for Madrid.

Now watch NYCFC loan Villa to MCFC at the start of 2014-15 season.

Their season starts in March of 2015.

It's rumoured he will train with City, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him loaned out back to Atletico or City until then, if that's allowed by UEFA.

Incredible player, especially for Valencia and Spain. Was the best striker in the world back then. One of my favourite non-United payers.

Is this just a rumour or should we start spreading the news?

Why wouldn't it be?

Well if NYCFC can loan him to City for free with no wage obligation, it sets precedent for the club to purchase players through NYCFC and loan them to City in future to avoid FFP sanctions. Obviously Villa will actually play for NYCFC, but I wouldn't be surprised to see UEFA step in on inter-company loans in the City football group to avoid a future loophole.

Won the league with Atletico and got to play in the CL final, seeing out his days with NYC. Not bad

Who wouldn't wanna live in NYC and get paid big bucks? Way better than playing at a city like Liverpool for example.

Great move for Villa.

Ah good point. I didn't realise you meant "for free".

It shows how mucked up our current system is really. Watford and Udinise pretty much did it. How did that affect Championship FFP

He has won, scored and performed in pretty much every major tournament. Top scorer in a World Cup and a European Cup. Has scored a Champions League final wonder goal. Must be one of the most underrated strikers of the past decade.

That's a good point. Would probably be very hard to accomplish in practice, audit and tax-wise.

One of the best strikers of his generation, I'd say. Superb player, shame he's struggled to hit the same form since his leg break.

In the Yankee Stadium, until their own stadium is built.

Finally, an opportunity for me to be pedantic about language! As an American speaker who plays soccer & baseball, I can confirm that we refer to it simply as "Yankee Stadium", no "the" needed.

As in: Manchester City will attempt to circumvent Financial Fair Play by overpaying old stars and putting them out to pasture in Yankee Stadium.

Wait, what? So you'd have written: "In Yankee Stadium, until their own stadium is built."

Ah you sure there isn't a very small 'the' hidden in there somewhere? "In t'Yankee Stadium, until their own stadium is built."

I'm angry and confused.

Yeah feck this owning two teams bollocks. If City are going to be able to circumvent FFP by having another squad to call players from in another league then the rules should be changed.
Similar things already happen elsewhere. AFAIK the same people own Udinese, Granada and Watford and they all regularly loan between themselves.

Lampard has signed for them too, apparently they might play for man city until the mls season starts

Mirror: "Lampard signs for NYFC"

Daily Mail: "Lampard to retire after World Cup"

:)

Anyway, David Villa...super player, we could do worse as a backup striker. He's the leading all time goalscorer of the Spainish national team and has won everything; La Liga, The Champions League, Uefa/Europa cup, two European Championships with Spain and one World Cup as well as the UEFA Supercup, Copa Del Rey etc etc. Very talented and consistent striker. Love him, disappointed we're not getting him instead.

Aye, he's been a terrific player. Probably the best striker in the world at one stage as others have said. I hate it when the time comes for players like him to disappear into semi-retirement.

Not even on t'internet :) It's funny, when I read your post it was the first time I had ever heard it referred to as "the Yankee Stadium". Wouldn't that be like "the Scouse House"? Anyway, I'm going to the Old Trafford to play some soccer. Wish me luck.

Saying 'the Old Trafford stadium' would make sense though. It's unkind to the word the as the first word is a noun and the last a word that usually would suit an introductory 'the'.

If our ground was called Manchester United Ground whilst it'd be to say "he's playing at the Manchester United Ground", it'd sound better than "playing at Manchester United Ground"

Damn the the yankees
