David Luiz on his way to Real Madrid according to RMC

Not convinced by him in a 4-man defence still, Chelsea's back 3 absolved him of marking duties and allowed him a more flexible free-role of either being the man who went to the ball and defended on the front foot or sweeping up behind, and also gave him more space and responsibility on the ball to drive in to midfield and build from the back both of which suited his strengths and made him a more valuable player as a result.

That said, Real will expect to dominate possession and he's one of the better CB's in the world to have if you're seeing a lot of the ball. Might also provide some insurance for Casemiro at DM, though I don't think we've seen enough of him here to be convinced fully yet by him in that position.

I think the key to Chelsea's title winning side was them outperforming their xG metric significantly. They scored 22 more goals than they were expected to, 7 more than the next highest Spurs. It is no surprise that both those sides are under performing in relative terms this season as consistently being that clinical is impossible.
Them being that clinical has no bearing on how they defended last season.

They have four CB's on paper but only three full backs so in total seven (eight if you count the kid Hakimi) players for 4 positions (Marcelo, Hernandez, Ramos, Varane, Nacho, Vallejo and Carvajal) which is by any measure not exactly great depth. From these players Marcelo, Carvajal, Varane and also to a lesser extent Ramos (going to hit 32 in a couple of month too) have history with injuries so adding another player is certainely worth it.

Makes sense, Chelsea don't want him it seems and Madrid could probably do with the experience.
I'd expect Chelsea to get a decent fee for him though considering it's Chelsea.

So what's going on? Is he injured? Just saw he's not even on the bench today.

I thought Varane replaces Pepe in the starting XI and they replace Varane on the bench. Surely Luiz going there puts Varane back on the bench?

So can we have Varane? I've not watched Real for a long time but a couple of years ago, he was an impressive young centre back.

A pairing with Ramos has a lot of entertainment/calamity/disciplinary/Christ knows what potential, make it happen.

Anyone interested in David Luiz as a defender please watch these entertaining video.

Newcastle are truly his standard.

Now we have Christensen playing well I suspect he realises he will be on the bench more often and this is a world cup season and probably his last chance in the WC so he needs to be playing.
It will be interesting to see if he plays.

He can play DM though not always successfully.

He really seems like a Real Madrid player. Think he'd do well there and get the odd red card here and there.

Real could do with another Grade A cnut in their defence as their cnut levels have dropped in that department since Pepe departed.

David Luiz is such a strange footballer. He's not really a centre half, but he's not really a midfielder.

He'd probably do great at Madrid where they won't be attacked very often. Plus it'd give them the option to play a back 3. I actually think the below side looks frightningly good.

Navas
Ramos - Luiz - Varane
Carvalaj - Kroos - Casemiro - Modric - Marcelo
Benzema - Ronaldo

Rather have Isco in my team.

For £25-30m we should be all over this guy. He’s better than what we have and is a great age with great experience alongside Matic.

Are you serious? Jones Rojo Smalling Lindelof.

I don't rate him as being higher than Jones or Smalling. Defensively I find him too inconsistent relative to them.

He always reminded me of Ramos - perfect athlete with brilliant ball-playing skills and quite good at 1 on 1, but their defensive positioning is disastrous. Ramos is better though.

By quite a distance, too.

He is a shocking defender, I wouldn’t trade any of our CB for that buffoon.

Personally trade Jones Smalling or Rojo as Luiz is much more 1. Fit 2. Reliable 3. More quality 4. Better on the ball.

I don't rate Luiz but I would have him over Jones and Rojo due to their fitness issues.

Rojo still has lots to prove for me as he’s slow and rash. He did well for a run of games but I’m not still convinced as like Blind he has a mistake or two in him. Smalling has issues on the ball and defending touch tight in the box.

More reliable in what? Defending? Have you actually seen this guy play in a 4 men defense? He is on Titus Bramble level of shitness. More quality on the ball and some nice YouTube goals, that’s it. And the most important thing is, he is never a Mourinho type CB, so no I don’t think this has the slightest of chances.

David Luiz is inconsistent defensively although he does look good in a 3CB formation. On the ball, technical ability, he is excellent

Why are we not in for him? He would be a massive improvement in our team.

After CFC allowed Matic to go to Utd can't see CFC sanctioning Luiz to Utd, after all we are currently rivals for 2nd.

No chance of agreeing to anyvthis plus Jose looks like he’s wanting a 3 man defence to me.

Yes Jose wants a 3 men defense, but I don't think he would employ such a headless player at CB.

Anyway, I've seen this guy try to play defense and he is a fraud, don't want to see him near our club.

A defense of Carvajal - Ramos - Luiz - Marcelo surely will be fun to watch, maybe they're trying to see if Ronaldo can pick up his older scoring pace by having to score at least 2 per game to get a draw
