David De Gea (SAF confirmed signing!)

Well, that's true. But looking at how Edwin staying at the club is always a year-by-year decision that he makes around December, I doubt his contract has such a clause.

Is it really that unlikely?

Even if we do sign Van Der Gea (or whoever) Edwin would be a brilliant number two.

In fact, him sticking around would probably be a big influence on whether or not Der Gea wants to join United, so he can train alongside his idol.

Brilliant in principle, but would he want to do that?

I imagine that big characters want to be first choice. Even if we do buy de Gea, if VDS signs a new deal, he should be first choice until form dictates otherwise.

de Gea is a baby in goalkeeping terms and it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to understudy VDS instead of being thrust into the limelight as our no 1...

Yeah, wouldn't mind that. Give VDS one more year and throw De Gea into a few games here and there. Saying that, I'd prefer VDS getting less games than normal and De Gea getting more games than Kuszcack did.

Though the whole thing is still just pure feckin' speculation!

It is, but the fact that Steele was there with him is quite telling.

If Steele's presence is definately true then that confirms we are at least monitering him. And then if Athletico are lookig to sell players, they already have another decent keeper and our own 1st choice is the oldest player in the league, the deal would make sense.

I saw the Barcelona and Atletico Madrid match, he performed very well. The commentators kept comparing everything about him to van der Sar, and while that probably is a little silly, I could see it as well. I'd be very happy if we sign him. If he gets anywhere near to how good van der Sar has been throughout his career it could be a bargain buy even if he costs a healthy sum, simply because it's possible we'd have him between our sticks for over 10 years.

I didn't know that. I would have thought he'd have had a fellow country man as his idol. Having said that, Casillas is still quite young I guess and they're not very similar.

Wow that is very interesting if Steele really was there.
Eric Steele WAS at the Valencia match, here's the photo of him at the match

I don't think it really says anything other than our GK Coach went along to view a very highly rated young goalkeeper. I'd have been a bit disappointed had we not been tracking him really as i'd expect our staff to be tracking several young goalkeepers.

I've heard we've been tracking him since he was about 15/16

We should move for this lad quickly before Barca figure out that Valdes really isn't a world class keeper.

His nickname is "Van de Gea" and I remember reading something about him saying Van der Sar was his favourite keeper.

One could say that these are all signs indicating that we should buy him. I admit I haven't been entirely satisfied by what I've seen from the other goalkeepers we have been linked with. There's been too much hype put on them. As for De Gea, he has great potential and some good goalkeeping characteristics. We are are not even hiding our interest in him and we would do well to get him for the future.

Maybe he's the right one for us?

There's so many goalkeeping prospects out there atm, i hope to buggery we pick the right one.

I would honestly like to see us sign DDG.. If you were to offer me any GK in the world right now (including Casillas, Buffon etc) I would still choose DDG.. Yes that is how highly I rate him..

Also I mentioned this in another thread:

What impressed me more and made me realize that it was not just the usual hype was the fact that he was called up to the 30 Man squad for the World cup and was cut from the 23 man squad behind Casillas, Valdes and Reina.. Which means in Del Bosque's opinion DDG was above Diego Lopez, Asenjo etc..

Ideally he should remain with Athletico for another season and then if he maintains his impressive performances we should look into the possibility of bringing him over unless ofcourse VDS is still fit and capable.. But of all the Gk's I have seen none are more re-assuring than DDG.. All seem to have a flaw in some part of their game & it is acceptable since they are all still young.. But from all of the Young and upcoming ones its quite difficult to look beyond DDG as of now..

Does he speak English though? SAF was probably there to give him some money to enroll into an English language course :)

I would prefer if we bought that keeper from Ajax instead. He looks equally as good as De Gea, should be a good bit cheaper and dutch players tend to settle long term more in England than Spanish do! If De Gea is being sold for anything more than 8-10 million quid than we shoud run a mile!

During Sky's coverage of the A.Madrid- Zaragoza game earlier tonight just after half time I believe. One of the presenters for what its worth said we where monitoring De Gea and said that he has a release clause of 17m euros. But that United thought that an offer 14m euros may well tempt A.Madrid.

He was never really troubled tonight in the Zaragoza game. Looked confident as usual when collecting and distributing the ball. Made one quality save in the second half with a powerful shot he turned round the post. I still cant believe how confident this lad is when he's out there. Definetly the best young goalie right now.

Atletico reject Fergie's advances
Last Updated: Fri, 24 Sep 2010 09:47

Atletico Madrid have rejected an offer from Man Utd for David De Gea because his family think he is too young to leave Spain.

Sir Alex Ferguson travelled to Valencia to see United's next Champions League opposition in action on Wednesday night, but a photograph of the Old Trafford boss at the match has uncovered his real intention for attending.

Ferguson, who never usually scouts European opponents, was sat next to United goalkeeping coach Eric Steele at the match - suggesting he was really there to spy at Atletico keeper De Gea at first hand.

The 19-year-old is a remarkable talent and is at the top of his form after a stunning performance against Barcelona last weekend.

United are on the lookout for a successor to Edwin van der Sar and apparently do not see Tomasz Kuszczack stepping up.

Ferguson had hoped Ben Foster would take over but the England keeper failed to impress when given his chance a year ago and was sold to Birmingham in the summer.

However, according to reports in Spain, De Gea's family have told Atletico not to sell him yet because they feel he is too young to leave home.

If that's true, maybe we could sign him in the Summer, loan him back to Atletico for a year and hope van der Sar takes the one-year extension. I'd like us to get him at some point, preferably sooner rather than later, I really like what I've seen of him so far.

We probably wouldn't need to do this if he's not leaving Spain, as I doubt the two big Spanish clubs would be interested right now with the first choice keepers they have. However, I also wouldn't rule out Real Madrid buying him just so we can't lol.

Indeed, or in Januray itself. Or at least get a first option signed and speak to DDG with the permission of the club. Maybe even get VDS to speak to him :D

He was interviewed on Radio Marca - the report´s at De Gea: "El nivel del Atltico es estar entre los tres mejores de Espaa" - MARCA.com

He's a good Atletico lad, delighted to have won the Europa and hoping to chase Barca and Madrid (but not expecting to catch them in La Liga this year) - he says he thinks SAF was there to see Valencia not him. Aww, bless the naive little teenager

"I'm under contract until 2013, I'm with my family and friends, which is what I need and what's important."

He also reckons Atletico should be top 3 and that it would be nice if Torres came home.

I can't believe that we may be replacing VDS with a rookie.

Not in the goalkeeper's department.

We've not really tried it. Howard is as close as you would get, Carrol wasn't a rookie imo.

All other goal keepers we tried/signed were experienced. (Barthez, Bosnich, Tiabi etc)

I don't see any real issue with signing a 'rookie' keeper - De Dea looks fantastic, and if we signed him we'd potentially have our keeper sorted for the next 15 years.

I can't believe that we may be replacing VDS with a rookie.

Some keepers just have the natural talent though, no matter what the age, they're just that good.

Casillas, Buffon, Reina, Hart etc.

I think it'd be worth the risk, definitely. And if we could keep VDS another year too, just to mentor him or maybe play a few of the bigger games if he looks nervous or doesn't fit in well at the start, it could work out very well.

I think that's a fair concern, but VDS almost certainly has another season left in him, if not two. De Gea may alternate with him for a season or two and also be mentored, which would be the ideal scenario.
