I'd take the kid over Adler, Lloris and Akinfeev any day of the week. He's going to be a special goalkeeper.

Only seen him a couple times (Europa SF and Final) but he certainly doesn't play like a 19-yr old keeper, that's for sure. Good head on him. As none of the other prospects impress me that much, I'm really hoping we sign him, esp. with Kuszczak being a wantaway.

20M Buyout clause? Just hit it and let him decide where he wants to play.

it's worth the money, thinking the taibi, carrol, barthez all causes us more than financially, denting our title run in the process.

Good no cheap, cheap no good.

Barthez was one of the world's top keepers when we signed him. And Taibi was a very promising young keeper. It's a very difficult position to pin down an find a top keeper.

Well 20m is a good bit of cash, seeing as we're probably going to have to get a Scholes replacement next Summer, maybe even a Giggs replacement!

Sorry if it's been posted before, but what is the source for the 20m figure?

Cheers dev1l.

No mention of an actual 20m buyout vlause in that report though. Just speculation that 12m might suffice.

Almost 30 when he signed for us.

Definitely. For me Akinfeev and Adler don't even factor into the discussion. I've only watched Akinfeev during the champions league and with Russia and he strikes me as pretty ordinary. He's like PIG, except Russian. Adler is a little better, but if we're going German why not get the best german, and that's Nuear (sp?).

Lloris has looked very good, but his price tag and the fact De Gea seems taller and will probably become more dominant as he grows into his frame makes me think if we're going to spend silly money on a keeper (15-20 million), it should be on him.

Fergie yesterday....any ideas what was the person on the other end of the phone telling him ?

Well here's a somewhat OTT summary of every time De Gea touched the ball against Barcelona, I'd recommend watching with the sound off

Has anyone mentioned the fact that we are playing Valencia next week and Ferguson merely left a capable team in Phelan's capable hands and went to taken otes on them? Seriously, Ferguson doesn't miss First Team matches to look at some young goalkeeper, huge potential or not.

Guess it was for both reasons, hence why he took his GK coach with him. However, just the fact that he went to another game doesnt make much sense for me. We have scouts, there is TV to watch the game at home. No need to miss a United game. Unless he needed to be there in person to talk to De Gea or whoever.

I think people are getting excited because Fergie brought Eric Steele, who is the clubs goalkeeping coach. Why bring a goalkeeping coach unless you are having an affair with him, huh?

corrected it for you ;)

Well.. can't agree more with Barthez, IMO he's on the decline when we bought him, something to do with personal life with him and his wife IIRC. He's more of a socialite type who can't be arsed to keep his standard top notch after a while, but sure thing is it's a better bet.

@ Cina : We ended up with 12.5 Barthez, Taibi, Bosnich, Caroll, and still ended up looking like a joke at the GK dept. Not to mention the opportunity cost at having these keepers hampering our season. So I guess if we're going to buy again (Since we have no youth worthy of note in GK dept) let's jsut buy the expensive but sure thing (at least a better odds if you claim nothign is for certain)

@ Radd : I'm sure somebody mentioned a 20M buyout clause somewhere in page 2

We can afford flops in MF / FW / DF since if they're not working we can just plug someone else, but not in the GK dept while next year might be the last for VDS / PIG, we really have no alternatives if the "Try and error GK" we bought don't make it.

I think SAF doesn't need to scout him. There's no movement or off the ball thing to watch in a GK.

I think him being there with his GK coach sends out strong intend to De Gea that we want him. It's a subtle unsettling of a player.

Imagine if Perez comes to Emirates to watch the game, the media will have a Fabregas frenzy

Barthez was expensive, Barthez was proven. Although you could say in his case, with his style of goalkeeping, there was always a chance of it going badly. Though he looked really good for a while for us. His first season was terrific and he was excellent for most of the third, until he had a breakdown in the heat of the title challenge of all timings.

De Gea looks very promising. Mind you, who if not the english would know something about young goalkeepers who look fantastic, until it goes a little... kaka.

Well... true... they might look like schmikes and turns out like Taibi, but at least with the likes of De Gea the odds of him doing well is bigger than other wise.

True. Admittedly, if I had to go for someone today, he'd probably be top of the list, simply because I'm totally unconvinced by some of the other names we've been linked with - Lloris, Neuer, Adler, not convinced by any of them. I'm very convinced regarding Akinfeev - that he's no where near good enough. Just a really good shot stopper. So since it's always a punt, De Gea would be a good one.

Looking at some of the big or rich clubs, Real has Casillas, Valdes isn't brilliant but he's a home grown player for Barca, Inter has Julio Cesar, Chelsea has Cech, City's got Hart. So we've got a chance if we go for it.

Well ostensibly thats the reason, but without getting all conspiracy theory its the first game he has missed for non personal reasons for 20 years or something like that, strikes me as odd for a champions league group game against a team that wouldnt have difficult to watch in several games lately. Add that to fact the goalkeeping coach is there and it dosent seem unreasonable to suggest there may be ulterior motives!

Could it simply be that Ferguson thought it was a good opportunity to not only see Valencia and do some CL research but also have a chat with Athletico Madrid in person about the possibility of signing De Gea? Y'know, show some real class and actually talk to the club's owners man to man rather than unsettling the player and club by using a paper to do its dirty work for them.

Besides gives Ferguson some time off too :)

I think it's pretty obvious that he saw an opportunity in the timing of the game to witness both in action. Valencia on a roll and De Gea on a roll. Competing. I only thought at first that he'd gone to see Valencia play but I thought it very odd since it doesn't fit his MO. But with the problems in the past in the goalkeeping department I makes sense for him to bring Steele with him and watch Van der Gea in action.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to raid Spain with a bid for Atletico Madrid's wonder keeper David De Gea.

Fergie missed his team's Carling Cup tie at Scunthorpe and flew to Valencia to watch United's next Champions League opponents but it was a cover for a personal check on the brilliant youngster.

De Gea, just 19, is rated the best young keeper in Europe - with a wonder show against Barcelona last weekend also watched by United's spies as they look for Edwin van der Sar's long-term successor.

United have been tracking De Gea for some time, even looking at him in Atletico's reserves last season before he stepped into the first team and took a firm grip on the jersey.

Ferguson knows that Atletico are looking to sell players after missing out on deals to move out Sergio Aguero and Diego Forlan in the last window.

The shrewd Red chief could step in shortly.

United's American owners would sanction a bid for a player of De Gea's potential as his value would not drop at any stage. He could probably be bought now for around £12 million.

De Gea just failed to make the Spanish World Cup squad after impressing at under-21 level. However most experts think he is the best emerging keeper in the business.

The modest youngster is still driven to training by his dad and is far from start-struck despite his meteoric rise in La Liga. He could be persuaded to come to United and understudy van der Sar in the short term before stepping in.

Ferguson's spies have been looking around for a potential replacement for van der Sar, who is on a one-year deal that includes a guaranteed extension if he plays 30 senior games.

United looked at Frenchman Hugo Lloris but he is far too expensive and did not shine at the World Cup. There was even interest in Joe Hart until he made Manchester City's first-team place his own.

Talent-spotting United want to move fast for De Gea before rivals move in. Ferguson also knows that De Gea could be eligible for Europe this season if he signed in January.

De Gea has played for Atletico in the Europa League this season - after helping them to win the trophy - but he can 'swap' competitions and be registered if needed.
