Chicharito tells De Gea: "It's good to talk"
Javier Hernandez has revealed the difficulties foreign players can face in adapting to a new life in the Premier League. Hernandez's Manchester United team-mate David De Gea has endured a difficult first few weeks in England, with high-profile gaffes raising questions about the 20-year-old keeper's suitability to the role of No.1. Hernandez, who is expected back in training next week following an extended rest after suffering concussion on United's pre-season tour of the US, said being able to speak English was a huge advantage for him: "Moving to a new country is always difficult, but the fact my dad and my sister came to live with me was a huge help," said Hernandez. "That made things easier. I spoke pretty well when I first arrived here and since then I've been improving bit by bit, understanding more and more and speaking better. But the truth is that knowing English was a massive help, because it meant I could communicate in the dressing room and get to know my colleagues more quickly.”

I definitely think English would help him feel more at ease at our club. Most of our lads seem like decent people to hang out with.
I'm waiting for De Gea's first English interview for MUTV.

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has also been discussing the Reds' new number one and has offered his services as something of a mentor to De Gea, his Spanish counterpart. The Independent quotes Reina saying: "I don't know De Gea personally – we have played against each other a few times but I don't have a problem with whatever he needs. I imagine that he can get my telephone number from any friend that we have in common."

I always liked Reina. Seems like a decent guy.

That's very nice from Reina, and I'm sure De Gea would do good to give him a call.

I heard Casillas said De Gea is so good he will make them all retire.

Yeah right Reina is after his girlfriend - wait till he gets his filthy paws on her!!

Don't do it David. Don't call him!!

Big concerns about this chap tbh, hope I am wrong but 3 errors in 2 games doesn't look great.

Oh no, how do you sleep at night? What will you ever do?

Whilst it's too soon to write him off surely it's understandable for people to be expressing a few concerns?

I susect it's mainly because some fans are nervous about what happened between the sticks post The Great Dane.

Great response, he looks quality all is fine. Yes he should and hopefully will come good but wake up there is a massive concern. You will probably realise when we drop points or SAF says so!

Except he doesn't mention De Gea. At all. Those wacky headline writers.

It is okay to be concerned (I am). But you're clearly overstating the case with words like 'massive' or 'big'. IMO, that is not warranted.

I've said I'm concerned, but it is mainly to do with how he responds mentally to these setbacks, changes in league, how he settles, etc, and whether he can rise to the challenge. Those are intangibles.

What isn't in doubt is his talent and potential. Like I've said before, he's making errors he wasn't making in Spain. That suggests the problem is in his head.

I'm not worried about his aerial game, as that's just a question of getting used to this league and developing his body.

But terms like 'massive concern', 'big worry' are overstated, unhelpful, and I daresay exacerbated by the media's bullshit.

I think every player needs time to settle into life at Old Trafford. Unfortunately for the keeper he is in the spotlight. As a team Manchester United will ensure that he has all the necessary support to get through this initial period. Everyone is of the opinion that this keeper will be very good and could even be the best.

Lets not judge him on this two performances, give him time and get behind each and every new player in the different positions to give there best to Manchester United.

3 error in 2 games?

He made 2, one in his competitive debut for us away from home at Wembely against our nearest rivals & the other away from home again aginst West brom in front of a loud crowd at a small ground. Considering the lad is just 20 odd years of age & the fact he is in a new country, completely different environment to what he was used too it could be considered unsurprising he made a mistake or two. As i said earlier once he plays at OT & has the home support behind him it'll do him the power of good confidence wise & we'll see the real De Gea.

It`s great to have him tested early on. Now he knows what playing for i big club means.
I am sure he will prove strong enough to cope.

Big concerns? He played 2 competitive games yet, is 20 years old. What about giving the lad a chance first and judge him after a few months

Ever since Edin Dzeko scored the second goal in the Community Shield, exposing David De Gea to a long ranger he probably should have saved, the following stat has been widely cited about Manchester United’s new goalkeeper:

11 – David De Gea conceded more goals from outside the box than any other goalkeeper last season in La LigaBBVA

It doesn't mean anything. Even if you've only seen two games from him before, you wouldn't judge a player be it good or bad games on just two performances.

Did you even read the previous page in this thread and watch the video of the 11 he conceded? Probably not.

He’s young, very young for a keeper, comparatively slight of build, inexperienced in the English game and doesn’t speak the language. Why then couldn’t he have been eased into the team after a reasonable settling in period ? Why couldn’t Lindegaard have been given his chance in the meantime ?

He is a good enough keeper to settle in on the job meaning whilst playing ironing out his faults and gaining better command of english as he goes along.

You don't spend £18M on a keeper and stick him in the reserves.

Why not ? This is a 15-20 year investment. He doesn't have to come good straightaway. So a while in the reserves / on the bench whilst he gets used to English conditions and learns the language in order to carry out one of the basics of successful goalkeeping, being able to communicate with his defenders, would be a sensible move I would think. What's wrong with Lindegaard anyway?

a mix of very good shots, indecisive defending and yep bad keeping.

You overestimate the quality of reserve team football.

This is a player who has been in the Spanish top flight, and in European competition. He is not just any 20 year-old.

Also, big contradiction when you bring up Lindegaard. He might be older, but he has not that much experience in the English league either.

No, you don't stick an 18 million pound player in the reserves regardless. Pete is right for once.

Its not regardless anything. It would have been the best move. Now he's under almost intolerable pressure for someone so young. He may very well be a great keeper in the making but he's only 20 for crying out loud with no experience of the physicality of the English game. At times the lack of communication with the back four was obvious last Sunday. I feel for him, as we all do, but letting him go on until his confidence his totally destroyed will be a huge error.

Because De Gea looked the business in pre-season and earned his place in the CS on merit. Lindegaard had some good moments in pre-season too but never looked as comfortable with the ball at his feet and his distribution wasn't as good.

After the CS game, it was a no-brainer to show some faith in him for our first league game. It was one which we would usually expect to win and you can't go dropping keepers the moment they make a (relatively minor) error. That's no way to build confidence.

Lidegaard is older and has a greater presence physically. You feel he can deal with that side of things and I presume he can speak the language. De Gea has a huge amount oif time on his side - no need to plunge him into the deep end straight away when he may not yet be up to it.

And putting him in the reserves will be even bigger of an error. He played 84 games in the Spanish top flight and I don't think Fergie is stupid enough to spend that much on a goalkeeper, only to put him in the reserves for a while. It's ludicrous. He will get used to the English game, we just need to give him time and putting him in the reserve side is not the way forward. That will shatter his confidence more than making a couple of "mistakes".

You may well be right and I hope he does establish himself but it's now a big ask in my view. Of course you don't drop keepers for making minor errors but DG was not only at fault with two goals in two matches but, to me, he just doesn't look the part - yet. In fact, it's going to take a while for that to happen, I think. There's no doubt Fergie will keep him in for Spurs and we'll see what happens then.
