i'm sure he will one day rejoin atletico, just hoping he would be something like 35 or 36 at least by then. spanish players would eventually end up back in spain like fabregas and pique for easy examples, but there are others who has been away for quite some time as well, such as torres and reina.

I can say for sure your post is neither here nor there!

Not long ago, the players like David Silva and Mata only went for 25-30m. Now even the like of Reus that has done nothing of sort, went 17m.

He was chosen as the best player in Budesliga last season. Don't know what you mean with nothing of sort, probably you haven't seen him playing that much.

Up until the Madrid game it did feel like a witch hunt with DDG tho, he was in the press every day with some story about how SAF was looking at other keepers or how shite he was or whatever.

Granted, since the Madrid game there was been a complete turnaround and he is now getting the recognition he deserves. Maybe some people feel the pendulum ought to swing further - ie too far - to counterbalance the OTT criticism he was getting before?

Indeed, the Real Madrid match in Spain was a big turnaround. It shouldn't have been, really, because funnily enough he hasn't shown that day anything new - great shot stopping and being a bit dodgy on crosses. But for whatever reason it seemed that performance in a big game started changing a lot of minds.

Perception is a bit silly sometimes. People form and opinion and stick with it, even when the reality changes (Rafael also needed time in order to get recognition). But then something happens and it all changes.

Anyhow, De Gea deserves all the plaudits. In the last couple of months he has really shown impressive improvement in dealing with crosses. Overall, despite all the chopping and changing in the first halves of both his seasons here, he really took over for the closing months of 2011/12 and 2012/13. Could have been two championships for him and the fact it's not, is not really down to him.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I also thought that Lopez arguably made the better saves in the first leg but barely got a mention. There was a narrative begging to be written about the young Spanish keeper coming of age on his return to Madrid, so the press jumped all over it.

The reality that this games was just part of a steady progression, with no new evidence that the flaws in his game had been ironed out, was just a bit boring.

I actually think the myth became self-perpetuating, in a way. Having got so many plaudits will have given his confidence a huge boost. And a keeper full of confidence will be much better at coming for the ball and taking command of his area. Which is what we've seen ever since that game.

No way Pogue. The first Coentrao save was one of the best I have seen this year. There were other great saves too. Lopez did well that night, with those 2 good saves from RVP (the second should have been saved by every decent keeper though) and the Welbeck one, but De Gea's were much better.

So hang on.... you do think he has been better since the Madrid game than he was before? You think he has been visibly more confident, more commanding, since that game, due to the praise he was getting from the media? That justifies the changed media perception of him. Whereas I have always thought the media were just six months or more behind reality when it comes to DDG.

I think he might have improved slightly since that game. Hard to be certain though. He's been improving gradually anyway. Just seems a wee bit more confident dealing with crosses and high balls. My main point was that his performance during that game wasn't the massive leap forward it was portrayed as.

De Gea improved significantly after the Blackburn game last season.

Any suggestion that De Gea became a new man or somehow broke out of the doldrums during the Real Madrid is pure idiocy. What the Real Madrid game did accomplish was opening the eyes of the morons who saw De Gea as unfit for the English prem.

The fans at away matches especially started signing his name a lot more around February time. Not sure if the flag with his name on it had already started appearing but I saw it at Fulham and QPR around then. I also can't remember if all this was due to his performances improving or if it was to defend DDG after the criticism he received after the 1-1 at Tottenham.

Think it might be more to do with the criticism as it was ridiculous around then with the likes of Jeff Stelling going on about the crowd hating him.

I think we've seen De Gea making really big steps in terms of dealing with crosses in recent games. It wasn't like that for a few weeks after the Madrid games, but the perception has already changed there and then.

A great keeper to have, I'd only have Courtois over him if Casillas would hang up his gloves right now. Great shotstopping, fantastic footwork, and great mentality. You can't ask for much more from a keeper as young as him.

Why? Do you think he's better?

Stand corrected. Poor choice of using Reus as an example.

PFA Team of the Year.

Well in Dave!

A game in Madrid changed everything.

He has been as good during the entire season, but a lot of people stated to understand that only after the Madrid game. Fully deserved.

Amazing ain't it? He stopped us from being humiliated on the openings night of the season, a day Fellaini dominated us aerially, and yet it took a big night in the Bernabeau to get the rest of England to wise up to fact DDG is works class.

I am pleased for De Gea and Carrick.....

Yeah, people who watch him constantly weren't surprised by his performance, as we've been seeing it all season. Yet when we claimed before that that he is amongst the best in the world we got laughed at. He has one MotM performance against Madrid though and everyone instantly gets off his back

The biggest compliment I can pay this guy is that we're all shitting it he'll leave eventually. Manchester United fans worried about losing a player.
What a class player.

or that spurs game when he made something like 5 or 6 spectacular saves and kept us in the game, one poor punch at the end which resulted a goal ( which wasn't entirely his fault either), and the media went ballistic on him.

I thought Mignolet was also in with a shout. Then again, he's not playing under the same pressures and playing high profile games as DDG. The kids mentally very strong.

I hope some journalists give themselves a slap.

It's amusing how many people are still slating him because he's in it and then using Hart and Szczęsny as people who have been better than him.

Credit to him for having a great season and embarrassing a lot of 'professionals'.

He is amazing, and he fully deserved it. Never lost his confidence or let his early mistakes get to him, and now he's most definitely the best keeper in the league.

He'll be the best goalkeeper in the world in a few years, hopefully at this club!

For me he is just one step away being the best in the world and that is more a mental block than anything else. Looking at Neuer you really see how he loves when the opponents gets a shot off or a cross in. DDG still looks like he'd rather not have the shot at him at all. This award will certainly add to that confidence that will make him take the next step.

If he takes that mental step to love the challenge instead of fearing the consequences he will be the best in the world. We have already seen this at some occasions too so it is not far off considering the mentality he has and progress he has had.
