If he kept it out it would have been seen as an outstanding save. He was left exposed by the defence so had no chance. Amazing that he had any time to react at all really.

Keepers get hit on the head/face by the ball all the time. Occupational hazard. If you're lucky enough to deflect it away from the goal with your bonce you claim it as a wonder-save.

Perfect example being Given vs us, first day of the season a few years back from Campbell's header. As a keeper myself I don't care if I save it with my noggin or my nob, I'm still doing my job keeping the ball out of the net...

...although DDG didn't on this occasion, but you get my point!

I just want to post Evans' opinion on de Gea.

Good to hear that English is not a problem for him.

I never understand players that don't learn English (no pun intended) such as the likes of Tevez who has been here years. If someone pays you big money you should at least make the effort to be able to communicate with your teammates, especially in such a team oriented sport where communication is vital. No question that this had affected de Gea a bit but it seems like he is making the effort to learn and quickly. Really reflects positively on his personality.

Also the way he came out for the warm up and took the effort to applaud all sections of the fans was fantastic

De Gea was trying hard not to laugh when he made that excellent save :D

Arsenal at home - we won - saved the penalty that kept us ahead.
Chelsea at home - we won - a couple of saves that made sure we were ahead.
Stoke away - we drew - he kept us in the game.
Liverpool away - we drew - same thing here.
Chelsea away - we drew - made that save at the end from Mata.
Ajax at home - we lost - if he did not make that save we would not be in Europe now.

Some folk obviously don't understand the concept of a young player with bags of potential. He's already put in some fantastic performances this season, and like every young keeper has made a few mistakes along the way. The past 4 games he's done really well, i don't think anyone can argue with that.

Bordering shit? You have got to be kidding me!

He does not inspire me with any confidence, and he makes me absolutely nervous, whenever the opposing team get within 30 yds of our goal. The opposing teams have scented this too, why do you think they jostle him at corners and shoot at every opportunity??

Shooting at him whenever they can hasn't exactly proven to be a good tactic, given how excellent he has shown to be at saving attempts like that recently. He's clearly still weak on crosses but I can't see how that leaves him as "bordering shit".

Corners, he was always going to struggle coming in because the way football is played in the Premier League is different. The coaches said they are working on that with him and are confident he is getting better.

And how many times, have they beaten him from outside the box? He is an excellent shot stopper. The only person who has beaten him from outside the box so far, who I can think of, is Dzeko in the Community Shield.

We'll just have to see if I'm wrong. Hopefully I am, time will tell.

Why, because he's made 3 good saves, 2 of which any keeper worth his salt should be stopping in his sleep.

No, dummy.

That he hasn't conceded many from outside the box. Ergo, he isn't weak there.

Or in other words, a sample taken from one (season) is poor statistics (and never, ever listen to what Redknapp tells you without putting on your critical specs. Even though he's on Sky and whatnot.)

It's nothing to do with that, he's only conceded one from range which was the Dzeko shot therefore you are wrong.

Admittedly he has only conceded the one, but he spills too many of the others, which in itself could lead to a secondary chance. We will just have to agree to disagree I'm afraid, or we will be going around in circles for days.

Yeah now you are just looking for excuses to make him look bad at every turn.

I think goldenballs is being overly harsh on De Gea here. He's really homing in on all of the negatives without really taking the positives into consideration at all. Admittedly, he has his weaknesses, but you've got to look at some of the better performances he's produced while here. His save against Chelsea won us a point, while his performance against Liverpool saved us from defeat as well.

You're always going to have some negatives with a player like De Gea. I mean, he's young and is stepping into one of the biggest clubs in world football. You can hardly expect him to be flawless, can you? There are weaknesses to his game, however he's already started to improve in some departments. When he first came in, he was scared to go for the ball at corners. He's changed that now. Sometimes, he can misjudge it and go for the ball when he shouldn't, but it still shows that he's at least been working on it and trying to get rid of a flaw from his game.

It could be argued that we should've gone for a ready made goalkeeper in his prime as opposed to one who still has a lot of development to do, however we've gone for De Gea now. He has a lot of potential, and could be a top goalkeeper for us in the future. We might as well stick by him now, even if it does require some patience over the next couple of years.

I love this forum but I have to laugh at the black and whites. Some people will only ever focus on one area of a player, depending onif they like/dislike him. Eg, Goldenballs does not like/rate him so concentrates on the bad points and skims over the good. Human nature to be honest

As for DDG, this kid has bags of talent, and for the record has saves us more points than has cost us if everything is taken into account. He has problems with the cross ball but there are very few young goalkeepers who do not have issues commanding thier area at a young age, taking into account language and new style of football, it is even more likely to be an issue. Add to that an evver changing back 4 and surely even the most ardent DDG hater must admit to a small amount of allowaqnce for the odd lapse.

I think people do not realise how hard it is for keepers to adapt to new defensive partnerships. It is not just like a lego brick that you replace, you need to understand how they play, when the defenders like to deal with the ball, thier pace and ability to cover, all things you learn as a keeper when you play with them more and more.

I do think as his English improves, and his physique bulks out(it will, look at VDS) he will get better, we just need to stick with it.

Give him a break. I have seen schooled with absolute stinke conceding 6 goals against Southampton, newcastle, derby. Even vds had some howlers like frequently palming the ball back into play to concede silly goals.

VDS gifted the opposition a goal in a Champions League final when he was 25, I think we can survive De Gea making a few mistakes in the PL when he's 21.

Depends how the keeper reacts to mistakes, a few mistakes completely destroyed Ben Foster at the top level. Luckily De Gea looks like nothing phases him, I mean I don't remember the last time a keeper got the same treatment he's recieved from the press over a long period.

Howard or Carroll probably. Its not that uncommon.

He made some incredible mistakes but also some awesome saves. The media as always concentrates on the negatives. For a keeper of his age it is exactly what i was expacting. Give him some time and we will have a superb keeper on our books.

De Gea looks a good prospect and has improved of late.

My issue is the fact we were not looking for a good prospect we needed the finished article and at the money we spent that is what we should have got.

I think there's some major differences there. Even if Foster was receiving a lot of hype and was expected to be better than he was, he was never hyped to the extent where some were thinking of him as a potential world class keeper, and one of the best in the world. Whether he warrants it or not, De Gea has been hyped up to that level.

By that arguement, are you saying Phil Jones is the finished article? Comparative price tag? I do know what you are saying but 18 mil is a snip when you conscider how good this kid can become if he is nurtured the right way and United are the club to do that(although we have a bad record with keepers)

You've got to remember that Jones and De Gea play in completely different positions though. The defence already has experienced players in it like Vidic and Ferdinand. Jones can learn from them, and the defence does not have to completely depend on him.

With De Gea, it's different. You only have one goalkeeper on the pitch. If you're spending that amount of money on him to be the first team goalkeeper, then you would often be looking for the finished article. I'm willing to stand by De Gea, and see how he does, however I can see where people are coming from when they say that we should've gone for the finished article and bought a goalkeeper who didn't have to develop at all.
