give him credit when its due. That freekick save is the best i have seen from him considering he was covering the right side of the post when the kick was hit.

I'm no keeper, but I was worried, he was leaving way too much space, and if Mata hit it right, DDG might not be able to make up the distance - but he got it right.

Thats what matters. He got it right. If he'd let go, then there would have been a lot of barking over here to get rid of him.

It was a beckamesque freekick to start with. I am still amaze you can bend the ball like that. I was lucky to bend the back by 2-3 degrees when I played.:(

You saying Mata didnt hit it right?

It was a perfect freekick, but the save was even better.

I think Ferguson has played a blinder with DDG in the last week by admitting that he's struggled but stating we have long term faith in him. It stops the press mischief making.

Really feel we could see a new DDG following these saves - they feel like seminal moments in his United career.

One thing I've noticed is that his kicking accuracy seems to have dropped, with him looking for the long ball a bit more frequently; likely a symptom of his low confidence. Would like to see him revert back to his old ways in this regard.

No I'm saying, prior to it being taken, I thought his positioning combined with a free kick hit right in the corner, there would be disaster.

But it seems (unsurprisingly), DDG knows a hell of a lot more about positioning than I do, and despite a quality free kick, he still got across in time to tip it away.

you dont remember his volley to valencia in the first half? it was pure class

interestingly, this shows why he was able to get to the ball ... the trajectory, and his movement as the ball was struck gave him a chance. Very good save all the same.

It's obvious no ? The keeper has to move to catch the ball and the ball's trajectory has to be within his reach for him to catch it.
Why are you making it sound like he was "lucky" that these 2 things were there to help him ?

A tad optimistic no? He's clearly going to be great in a few years, but we already know he was a super shot stopper, I don't think it's going to stop teams from making him struggle on corners this season, sadly.

I expect the coaching team to work with him on this throughout the Summer, bulk him up a bit too, and next season is where we'll really start to see the potential the boy has.

I hope that last save in particular boost his confidence but he still looks shit scared at every cross. He needs to watch a few Schmiches vids and learn how to go right through players regardless.

The Dane wasn't perfect as first either, especially on crosses. And even later in his career, as with many keepers, he brain farted on a cross or 2. The one v Bayern away still haunts me.

I was thinking exactly the same.

His starting position looked way to far to the right but then if you look at his position at the time when the ball is actually kicked, he is quite more central.
Doubt he would have made it if he had not made that adjustment.

I know it's early doors... but I may well upgrade that save to my favourite save ever. David Seamen can feck right off...

Or he was urging Mata to hit it there by leaving it wide open, before adjusting when Mata's eyes moved from the goal to the ball.

It was excellent keeping, he lead Mata into doing something and then read Mata superbly during his run up.

Of course he played some great passes - he always will because he has that in his locker.

But I felt that, generally, his play from the back was longer and 'safer' - I'm not sure whether anyone has a Chalkboard that could give credence to my perception?

I'm sure that a fully confident DDG would play much shorter when he has the ball at feet.

I specialise in optimism, by and large!

Just feel that he's come out of a massive game with real credit and that will take pressure off and also give him real confidence personally.

He'll still have the occasional ropey moment, but it will have been a big match for him mentally.

He'd clearly been told to punch every cross, I'm fine with him doing that until his strength improves.

What has his strength got to do with catching?

He's not a waif.

He just needs better adjustment and decision making he is capable of taking crosses now as he has done he just needs to get better at it.

To be fair, I think he has really proven he can perform in the big matches. He was MOTM vs Barca while in Spain. He also put in great performances vs Arsenal, Liverpool early in the season and twice against Chelsea. That is one aspect that is imperative to become Uniteds first choice. He is a brilliant shot stopper and will eventually come good with balls in the air once he develops a more commanding presence. Loved his reaction after the Mata save, almost like he expected to save it

Is there is a video/gif showing his reaction to the save
I liked the way he reacted, it was as if he was saying "and what?" and that this save was the normallest thing in the world

It's extremely annoying how so many papers are mentioning his one punch as a 'sign of weakness' and putting a negative spin on his performance yesterday.

To be fair the press have all gone over the top with praise for that save.

Maroon in making a total pillock of himself when talking about goalkeepers shocker.

That save was simply stunning. Like seriously, 1 of the best I have ever seen.

In terms of overall performance I'd say it was decent. Still looked iffy on crosses and all the saves he made you'd expect him to make (apart from THAT 1 obviously). In no way at fault for any of the goals.

It just bugs me that noone would even think twice if Edwin punched that cross, but I reckon every new player who're supposed to replace such a legend will be in the spotlight until he's proven himself over an entire season

Exactly, he was more of a catcher when he was at Athletico but in the PL you get elbows in your face when you try to catch the ball so its best for a young keeper to get rid since the referees are fecking useless.

He's at United, people look for opportunities to pull us down. It was deemed a bread and butter save by the commentator on my stream. dont know who it was.

I dont think it's just because he's with us though, to be honest. Some players are getting stick as soon as they are showing signs of weakness (atleast for the 'top' clubs in England) simply because everyone besides that team's fans love to gloat. Carroll has been given loads of stick, aswell as Torres, so it's just a general love of gloating which makes these players being singled out by the media.

Would you expect him to be fully confident after some what he's been through. This performance will do his confidence the world of good. By getting an extended run of games, I think we'll see that confidence come back where he'll play those types of passes. Also, I think it also depends on the personnel we have out there. I noticed he was more apt to do it when we had more technically able players on the field.

Both carroll and torres deserve it though. they came at huge prices and havent done anything close to justify it.

De Gea is a 21yr old keeper in his first season in the league. everyone knows he's been brought with an eye on the future rather than being the best available GK currently. Yet, everyone ignores that and tends to crucify him. I've even read reports saying he was at fault for mata's goal.

It's the single figure IQ section of our fanbase who keep trying to drag him down and encourage the press to spout such shite.

Not sure about that evra, seems a Spanish thing rather than orders. He was definitely trying to be more assertive on corners though, their first one he was just pushing anyone trying to come close to him, even our own players ( evra the first victim who gave him a "heyyy what the hell?!?" Look )
