David Brooks

Even at 20m , we still shouldn't get him.
Greenwood at this time is a squad player, so why get another one?
You won't be helping Bruno by getting a player who has no hope in hell of challenging his spot. Successful teams are not built based on that.

Greenwood is a first team player as we have no right winger. Where do you get he’s a squad player? Who starts ahead of him?
Have you missed we play 3 hybrid strikers up top and when that doesn’t work it’s Jesse, Mata and James as the alternatives.
If Ole wants better options, then good on him I hope the Glazers financially support him.

Brooks is no natural winger, well at least not top 4 squad quality.
I meant Greenwood should be a squad player at this stage of his development.
I wouldn't even mind us getting two wide players but they have to be quality.

When you get so so players, you will be looking for ways to let them go after 1 or 2 seasons.

David Brooks. £40m. Wow.

The level of ineptitude in this potential signing is laughable.

If we pay £40m for Brooks and watch Liverpool get Thiago for £30m and Arsenal get Partey for £45m I might need a break from football for a while

Didnt Chelsea get Pulisic & Ziyech for around that price? I swear our recruitment team have zero clues I can’t emotionally invest in this negligence!

Yeah because Thiago and Brooks are sure to be on the same wages.

So someone on Twitter leaks unsubstantiated claims that we’re after Brooks and the Caf implodes

Do we really want to be competitive and win trophies?!
We don’t appear to have massive ambition to win the league or challenge in Europe, no. However if you say that on here you’ll get pelted with abuse & called a WUM.

We seem to place far more importance on having a strong British presence in our team than the other top 6 clubs. David Brooks is not twice the player Ferran Torres is, in fact he’s less talented, yet we appear willing to pay twice the price. I assume the fact that he is British plays a part in that.

It's worse, someone says we're interested, finds a random fee quoted and takes it all as truth and moans about it.
Yep. Totally made up fee.
The one last night from one poster that we need to pay Sancho’s agent 50m, had posters jumping off roof tops. It was incredible

Learning about how Bayern have put together their team with so many very low priced players, I think fans need to be much more open minded to these sorts of transfers. We cant just keep paying £50m for guys like Fred, AWB etc.

Last year, Woodward and OGS talked about the new scouting process, backed up by our own bespoke big data ranking software. Im assuming that process has identified prospects like Brooks, who if any of us are honest, none of us would have suggested.

I'd love to see the names of the top 10 players valued under £30m that system has identified
I'm all for getting quality on the cheap; the problem is that I'm very much against signing players who missed basically the entirety of the previous season with an injury that required two surgeries. That is just an insane risk in these times.

Here's the thing though. It feels like we don't have massive ambition, true - but if you look at our spending over the last seven years, we do spend money with the best of them. But someone mentioned Bayern on here: they got Davies for €10m, Goretzka on a free, Süle and Koman for €20m, Gnabry for €8m, Pavard for €35m - we don't do bargains like those, ever. We spend shitloads of money on players who turn out to be underwhelming so we're constantly way behind the rest in quality and can't catch up.

I like Brooks, good technically and would offer another option from out wide. His injury is a worry, but as a squad option I would be delighted. If he's a replacement for Sancho, then we can get fecked though.

That's once again on them, though. They don't give a shit, they're not spending their own money, they're using the money the club is generating, whilst taking money out themselves. If they really gave a shit, you'd think after 10 years of heavy investing and still being shite, they'd consider the possibility that their approach isn't working.

Instead, they dangle a bone in our face every time there is tension in the fanbase, leaks of DOF's, changes in the structure etc. only for us to never hear of it/see any developments until we next get tense. We're nothing but a cash cow for them.

If our right wing options next season are Sancho, Greenwood & Brooks that will be a massive upgrade on Greenwood, James & Lingard yes. So if he’s as well as Sancho I’ve got no problem with it. If he’s instead of Sancho, well, I’ve got no words.

Brooks is getting compared to James a lot on twitter which is harsh. He can actually play football, but he’s not good enough to be a starter.

He has serious fitness problems though. He’s only completed 90 minutes about 10 time’s in his career & he’s in his mid 20s. That’s very worrying.

Bournemouth fans are adamant that he should never play right wing for them, due to a lack of stamina, work-rate and pace. Just one example:

Looking into his fitness in more depth, he's only managed to complete 90 minutes of league football 11 times in his entire career. That stat was so surprising that I double checked it.

At 23 years old, he's played 3000 minutes of league football - 33 games total.

Coming off the back of a severe injury that needed a second operation as the first was unsuccessful, I can't help feeling that it's a crazy signing to consider. So many question marks over fitness, form and recovery.
Interesting post mate

But that makes no sense: our return for investment is abysmal, easily the worst in Europe - you can't tell me they don't care about that. I'm more than ready to believe they have no clue how to change things, that they're just hoping we'll eventually have a manager who can get things right. It's a lack of competence more than anything.

Why are we assuming the £40m as gospel?

Because it's a high fee, therefore a stick to beat the club with.

Same way if it was quoted as £5m, everyone would be saying it's bullshit..

Always comes back to good news = lies. Bad news = true

 silly season is well and truly here
Something to complain about?? People seem to enjoy that.

Zero chance we pay that for him. I'd be surprised if it went over 25m
Agreed, and if it was 40m it would have to be heavily performance based off the season he had.

Fair, but if it bothered them as much as you'd think it would, surely they'd be able to decipher that they're simply incapable of getting us back to the top and look to hire the correct structure/people and delegate responsibility. I don't know, even with our terrible performances, we still generate ridiculous revenue, so who the feck knows.

Negativity bias in full view.

40 is okay if its with add ons. Most we should pay in fulll is 30 and even that is being generous

I feel people are underrating Brooks by thinking we could get him for 25m. He's a very tidy player.

I’ve wanted us to sign Brooks for a long time. I can’t think of a more perfect player to come in and take up the Lingard/Pereira/Mata role. He’s quality, and even quickly looked impressive when he returned from his long lay-off.

Think a lot of people would be surprised about him if he does come in. He's a very talented player.

If we could get him for around that price then it would be worth a gamble. He could add to our squad depth, especially if Mata/Lingard/Perreira are leaving.

HOWEVER. For those of us that have actually watched him play, we are yet again signing another player who can't cross the ball very well. I think we have enough "wingers" that cut inside. I would like to sign someone that can provide us with a bit of service from the flanks. Its something we are desperately missing from this team as none of our wide players are very good at crossing or delivering a final ball.

I agree, but if I'm honest, I don't think our team is made for crosses anyway. We have forwards who are very quick off the mark, but none are particularly great headers of the ball. We should be looking for early and whipped crosses/balls in behind early.

I digress though. Brooks is quite tidy when he gets into the pockets with his passing into dangerous areas and he's a playmaker from out wide, apart from Mata, who is getting on, I don't think we really have that in the team. Would be a different option to what we have.

Agree with this. The only players in our team who should be crossing are the FBs. Our attacking lineup relies on fast, tidy, technical play and Brooks suits that perfectly. Never a fan of youtube highlights reels but you can very easily see how he would link up with the likes of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood.

The only concern with him is the injury that kept him out for 11 months. There's also rumours that Sheffield United inserted a sell on clause when they sold him to Bournemouth.

Fullbacks are the wingers and must provide the width.

Barcelona's transfer dealings make us look like champs

Yeah, I guess you're right, they really dropped the ball in the last few years. I forgot about that because they've been clearly better than us on the pitch but that's certainly not down to their transfer dealings.

Pulisic was 58m pounds.

Pretty sure there was source today he will be available for 30m pounds. Even at worst, it'll be with adds on. That's exactly the fees you want to pay on 23 years old attacker for squad option but can provide competition to the regular players.

How many members have being bemoaning our squad over the last month, Brooks in reality would be a squad player if he was purchased. I for one think he's a better option than the majority of our bench.

If it's true, it's a step to improve the squad, people need to stop being negative about improving the squad.

Would take him over Grealish if it meant getting Sancho, pre injury this kid was better than Grealish of this season

Of course i'm NOT a wum!!

We, as supporters, certainly want to win everything possible.

He's definitely a good player but has been injured for a full season and his team has been relegated.

The stats were pretty similar. He's younger and half the price. Good business assuming his ankle is fully healed.
