Darwin Núñez / signs for Liverpool

The guy will be a superstar at Liverpool under Klopp, and everybody knows it.

As soon as it was reported, that Mane was leaving, I knew our chances of signing this guy were gone.

We have just lost several players and have yet to put in any bids for anybody, and are too busy chasing a playing who doesn’t want to join.

Meanwhile Pool realise, Mane is leaving and don’t waste anytime, in sounding out his replacement.

The sheer contrast between both clubs, is unbelievable!

Klopp and Liverpool have a great record with transfers, especially when they spend big money. So I may just be completely wrong but I can't really wrap my head around this deal other than Liverpool having few ways to really improve the team to keep pace with City other than a big Plan B striker and figuring that the next couple years are YOLO time for winning the big trophies.

I still can't quite get past the suspicion that all the Liverpool interest is just rumors planted by his agents or Benfica trying to drive another club, whether United or somebody else, to bid. But the simplest explanation is probably that Liverpool have some genuine interest.
I honestly think they've shit themselves a bit with Mane leaving and City having already signed Haaland.

How have players coming over from Portuguese league done compared to, say players from the bubdesliga?

don’t tell me you want nkunku :wenger:
Portuguese league, give over. Mehdi Taremi has 20 goals and 12 assists and yer man Nunez has 26 goals and 4 assists. Yeah like I said you’re full of shit if he’s one of the best prospects.

We should be making a £60m bid for Taremi then after all he’s clearly more productive than one of the best prospects according to you.

I stand by what I said.

Thats how signings are make no dragging no exploring and no preparing. Our bunch of fools should take lessons from them.

Problem with United.. they have no clue who to sign.

When you hear how bad our previous scouts were, saying players were rubbish and they turn out to be amazing and yet we blow double the price for epic failures.

So when they go into a deal, they basically line up 3 or 4 and negotiate them all in one position and just accept whichever one doesn't turn us down and pay him stupid money.

Pick one target and go full on board after him and make him feel wanted, just like Fergie did.

It's so embarrassing, we are still seemingly using same tactics.

Has Taremi been banging them in in the CL? Taremi is 29, when has anyone that age been described as a prospect? It’s you who is full of shit.

So when we were told it would take a couple of years to get the club sorted out you're complaining after a month.......

He was 20, first season in Portuguese football. The next year he hit 26 goals in 28.

Maybe it was a fluke, or perhaps he's just got better?

People seem to be clinging onto these silly youtube videos and champions league stats that apparently make him a bad player.

I've not seen a striker give Liverpools defence such a hard time for a very long time. Maybe it was a lucky performance, but he showed plenty enough to me that night alone.

Whoever ends up with him will get a goal machine. The odd dodgy touch won't matter when he's hitting 20+ a season.
His stats on FB ref are pretty alarming.

https://fbref.com/en/players/4d77b365/Darwin-Nunez

In the 1 percentile for passes completed. His non-penalty expected goals was 0.32, but he scored 0.73. I’ll admit he looks strong and good in the air, but there were a lot of deflections and keeper mistakes in his goal highlights.

Who the hell knows? At this point, you look at Klopp’s track record, you’d think he could turn Martial into a world beater.

Nunez looks nothing like Firmino or Jota, and Klopp likes to have his CF to be involved in build up play. Still, 54% completion rate on passes is abysmal… the more I look at it, I’d rather have CR7 at striker with Rashford 2nd choice than pay 85m for this fella.

Don’t know if he’s good or not all that but damn it’s exciting signing attacking players so the fact he looks nailed on for Pool is frustrating

I don't even know why you post on here, just constant negativity with every topic

Way to miss the fecking point, you came in here using the number of goals as some sort of proof that this guy is such a prospect. I called you out for what a pointless stat that is because it’s the Portuguese league and then showed how even a substandard player could get those numbers (or even better) than Nunez, you move the goal post.

Ah yes champions league goals, Nkunku has more than Nunez.

You can’t be stupid enough to think he meant every player from Portuguese league is great?
What the feck are you on about? He used the point that two of our best players happened to come from the Portuguese league as some sort of counter to the argument that it’s generally a substandard league. So I gave him examples of players we’ve signed that have been anything but great. Stupid is using goal scoring stats from that league to label a player like Nunez one of the best prospects.

Kolo Toure came from the Ivorian league, it doesn’t mean it’s not a fecking shit league.

39 goals this season. "one of the best prospects my arse" my arse.
Bas Dost scored 36 goals for Sporting a few seasons ago. I like Nunez but there are questions marks with him. He has a lot of room to improve technically if he wants to become a top centre forward in the PL and he's only had one good season in the Primeira Liga. Last year he scored 14 goals in 44 games in all competitions.

these stats are purely for the CL, hence why they are skewered.

I believe Darwin is a predator in the box.

There is no doubt now both Pep and Klopp finally realized they cant win big, tough games in CL without one. You need that guy in the box, the salahs, KDBs are not enough.

Real Madrid proved it.

Im worried ETH will realize this once the big CFs are away from us.

I honestly think they've shit themselves a bit with Mane leaving and City having already signed Haaland.

Beginning of the end for them.

Extremely difficult to replace that calibre of player. Especially on a budget.

klopp entering his "end of dortmund" phase? ;)

If 85 million is your budget to replace Mane, it certainty aint the end of the world.

Reading the dippers are offering £80 million with add ons up to £100?

If they do that I'm guessing that's there full transfer kitty? Or is it the agents etc playing one club against the other.

The only thing We got over the dippers is .this guy is going to start for us is he going to for them ?

Those stats are based on just 614 minutes played, all in the Champions League against mostly superior opposition (Liverpool, Ajax, Bayern, Barca). The sample size is too small and too skewed to be useful or indicative of anything.

He's mediocre, but it's not like he's going to play under Pep. Klopp could turn him into something.

the point was that most of the players who performed well in that league have performed well in the PL. contrast with players like Werner, kagawa, miki who tore it up in Germany but didn’t perform here. Whatever fits your narrative though.

The fact you so easily resorted to f’ing and blinding says a lot about your intelligence.

That's an enormous fee for a player so unproven. Liverpool trying to out City City.

Yeah then there is mkhitatyan kagawa Werner, possibly sancho from a supposedly top league.
You can’t be stupid enough to think he meant every player from Portuguese league is great?
I don't disagree with what you're saying but you're not helping yourself with statements like these. There's been excellent players that have come from the Portuguese league and there have been flops as well. Same with Bundesliga, yes there's been flops but there's also been some fantastic transfers that have come from there.

Careful using fbref for players outside the top 5 European leagues. They only show data for the 'Big 5' and European competitions over the last year - in Darwin's case those stats are based off 614 minutes, so statistically pretty worthless.

You’re never going to get a 100% success rate. The original point was that he said the stats meaning nothing as it’s the Portuguese League, when in fact there have been more successful acquisitions from there than almost every other league in Europe.

By contrast, the majority of high profile acquisitions from the German league in recent years have flopped.

I have a bridge to sell you if you think Liverpool just randomly came in ready to pay the price without at least a few weeks worth of work/talks.

If they’re willing to pay £80-100 million for this guy let them have him. He’s not worth pissing our transfer kitty on him

For me, it's more spending a tremendous amount this season on a player that isnt guaranteed to be a big goalscorer for us/hit the ground running in this rebuild. £80m on a striker, which isn't the top priority this window ,will eat heavily into the budget, leaving us short on recruiting in other areas of more importance.

He's had his breakthrough season, and I personally think he looks like a very good striker with a lot of potential. You are right in that that Liverpool game was mightily impressive and cant remember a striker be so dominant against that defence for a while.

For me it's not the season to spend that much money with little track record.

Eh? He isn’t going to start for us. This is the big issue we have when signing any striker this summer. They have a 37 year old named Ronaldo in front of them who wants to play every game. Who does he have ahead of him in the striking role at Liverpool?

If they’re willing to pay £80-100 million for this guy let them have him. He’s not worth pissing our transfer kitty on him
This is another point, why are we accepting a kitty of 80-100m when we’re in the position we are in? It’s clear we need to spend closer to 200m. Obviously it will be hard to sign more than one sought after target with that kind of budget.

Not sure he looks good enough but only annoying thing is that Liverpool and City continue to have strikers and forwards who can press witj intensity and we rely on a 37 year old as our undroppable star.
