Darwin Núñez | Liverpool player | Fighter

Oh ffs…. He’s among top 3 best young forwards. Peach of a signing and utterly depressing as a United supporter. Hope we sign somebody like Nkunku this year or next.
You bet we would. A very Harry Maguire kind of feeling for FDJ.
FDJ has been very underwhelming at Barcelona. Nunez has proven himself in Champions League. He has all attributes of a top striker. While jury is still out for FDJ, he has done nothing exceptional in his career up till now.

:wenger:
Who are your top 5 young forwards?

God don’t ask him that. Will come out with more shit.

I wonder if Mane wanting to leave combined with City signing Haaland has caused an uncharacteristic panic from Liverpool?

Nunez feels a Klopp player about as much as Lukaku felt like a Tuchel one.

I have not understood this signing from day 1. Benfica mates of mine that I've spoken to feel they've made off like bandits, especially considering what Darwin looked like in 20/21 - and these were the same lot who felt this way about Nuno Tavares leaving last year.

Comparisons to Joao Felix are ridiculous. Felix was miles better at a younger age - and coincidentally he'd be a vastly better fit for any top team than Darwin.

Yeah we all (United supporters) hope he fails, but Klopps signings tend to overperform in general. He turned Salah into a beast from not being that good at Chelsea before.

As I said before I would not really been happy if United bought him for that sum which says something.

I did not want us to spend the insane money on Felix either.

Salah certainly improved significantly under Klopp, but he also went up levels from his time at Chelsea in Italy at Fiorentina and then Roma.

I also think there's a distinction to be drawn insofar as Klopp discovered the best role for Salah as a right forward who stays high - which unleashed him in a way that was unprecedented. I guess I just don't see how any sort of equivalent shift could be made for Darwin, but perhaps I am wrong and/or perhaps Darwin can improve the parts of his game that are currently lacking.

I don’t bet, but you can note it down here and we will come back in an year. Nunez will score 20 plus goals in his first season and FDJ will flop like Fred and Maguire here.

We don’t need to do 5, Nunez is the best after Mbappe and Haaland. You can add Nkunku and Osimhen in the mix.

I mean this is patently absurd. He's not even the best young forward from the Portuguese league in the past few years - he's not on the level of Leao or Felix. To say nothing of the likes of Vlahovic, Adeyemi, Alvarez, David, etc. And if you're opening it up to include attacking midfielders / wide forwards like Nkunku, he falls even further down the list.

Why can't people let signings actually start playing for a new club before making judgement calls like "he's over priced" or "he'll score 20+ goals easily under Klopp". None of us know how he's going to get on.

I feel like Roy Kent on Soccer Saturday here.

I don’t know which sport do you watch. He’s better than all of them. Peak Cavani will be his minimum ceiling.

You are thick as pig sh1t. You’ve clearly not watched Nunez much. Liverpool fans and yourself will be in for a big surprise this season when he performs nowhere near what they expected.

Clearly you know zilch about football and talk like a trashy teenager. You can bet your behind he will score 20 plus goals next season.

In all competitions? That would be nothing special.

I admit this worries me. I've never really focused on Darwin so I'm 100% reliant on our scouts and Klopp. A winning combo for me. He took a Chelsea reject and turned him into a record goalscorer much to opposition fans' confusion. Hoping Klopp sees the same with Nunez.

Keita and Ox are poor examples as they spent 75% of their time here injured. If Nunez is going to be injured then I'd agree we're fecked.

Liverpool went from a very fluid interchanging Mane, Firmino and Salah to a very rigid Diaz, Nunez, Salah.

I must admit I was very surprised Klopp was so keen on Nunez. He’s not the type of player I see in a Klopp system. He’s certainly not the type who will have fast interchange passing with other players around him who link up with him. He will be a player who wants crosses into the box which Liverpool will provide but how will it affect Salah and Diaz because they certainly won’t be the ones supplying crosses and they won’t really have a player like Firmino or Mane to interchange with. Going to be interesting to see how he gets on.

But I currently see Liverpools front 3 as a significant downgrade at this moment in time compared to their front 3 of 2/3 years ago.

It reminds me of comparisons with when we had Rashford, Martial and Greenwood as a fluid front 3 to when we had Lukaku where we had to play a totally different game.

Nunez does seem a very Lewandowski type player from back at Dortmund. Someone who is strong with the technical ability to hold the ball and play passes (though I personally don't think he's technically very strong).

In terms of positioning it only looks rigid if you look at the stature of Nunez. You would not expect a big, strong forward to be part of a fluid interchanging system but Nunez has played on the left wing for Benfica, and especially during big matches. From the match compliations I've seen, he also likes to run with the ball as he is quick, so he can definitely switch positions with Salah or Diaz, though I don't think he will be nearly as effective as Firmino/Jota were as they are seem like much better passers.

Nunez gives them an option to playing with a big number 9 who can play creative passes with the wingers, like Lewandowski did with Reus, Gotze/Kuba at Dortmund with Klopp, and someone who can rotate to the wings if he needs to play that system.

It's still a very risky signing for me as he's only had one great season in a good European league, so you would want a bigger body of work before bidding 70 mil. I don't see it this far to be honest.

“The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore, because the game is about playing together.” Goofy said calmly to Daffy Duck.
In 2016? I mean sure football and the market has moved on. He is playing in UCL finals and we are where we are

There were only a handful of players, all unattainable for us, which would not have been a significant downgrade from the Mane-Firmino-Salah front three of a couple of years ago.

At least we are busy with replacing our front three one by one with younger players who have yet to hit their peak, instead of trying to extend the lifeline of Mane-X-Salah one or two years by signing someone on top of his game but ready to decline. Diaz, Jota, and Nunez are 25, 25 and at least two of them are likely to improve even further in next seasons. There's literally not a better strategy I could have seen us deploy - we keep being competitive because we have signed players which are already quality, with the potential to become very good players or (at their ceiling) a top-5 / top-10 players in the world at their position.

Not to mention he already came out four years ago saying how he was wrong and he didn't expect the market to evolve the way it did.

Still overpaying. Still a ton of money for a one season wonder, if it is at all a wonder. The only thing Goofy is playing is himself.
If it was United who signed him we'd be made fun out of. Fortunately it's Klopp so it must be a 500 IQ signing when the reality suggests otherwise. Remember when Firmino was "the best CF" for Liverpool? "wouldn't trade him for anyone"? Salah and Mane were monsters so Bobby no goal was not a big issue and because it's Klopp's idea, its the best thing in the world when he could literally replace him and they would have scored more overall. This seems to be another Klopp love in, he signed Nunez and paid a lot so it must be the best decision in the world. And when he scores 8 goals a season, you will have people telling you he's the best for the system and it's not about goals.

I think you need to lie down for a bit.

It's a lot of money, and it could go either way, but let's not act like it's surprising that a lot of people think that this guy who was a goalscoring machine at Benfica last season will be a goalscoring machine when incorporated in one of the best attacks in football. The reasoning after their comments can really be that simple sometimes. If you disagree and think he will struggle, fine, we'll find out soon enough. The problem is that you'll be out here by December with the pitchforks out if he hasn't set the world alight in his first half season, while reality can very well be that he needs a season to adjust (at 23 years old) and only becomes a force the season afterwards or so. No doubt many will be laughing and writing him off though if he isn't immediately one of the best strikers in the league.

Football and transfers are very rarely black or white.

Definitely agree it's a winning combo; I just don't think it's infallible. Also a fair point re: AOC and Keita's injuries.

Mate I'm not out here trying to piss in anyone's cornflakes for no reason - I just feel more qualified than most on here to comment because there won't be many who have watched him play regularly to the extent I have. For me it's entirely fair for there to be question marks over someone who seems stylistically incompatible and has had only one top-flight season where he was even above average.

Don’t you dare say anything negative about them. The scouse mafia will hunt you down then go to the media.

Just saw this guy kicking a ball around on the green outside my house, and he's crap.

I actually dont get it. Yes he might be a very good signing for Liverpool, we all know Klopps history with transfers.

However; when people say he is the top 5 in Europe. Come on, 90% of us didn't even know his name before January.

There's a whole thread dedicated to you in the current event forum: "TheReligion, what's the point?" I would have to agree. :p

Watched him for one game against Liverpool and he reminded me of the game when Haaland scored 5 or so goals for Norway before moving to Dortmund. The conclusion that he's a natural finisher it's instinctive and something you can't teach. How he will look in the league depends on how he adapts but players from the Portuguese league seem to transition will into the premier League.

Overpriced quite clearly but all that will be forgotten if he gets a decent return within two years for Liverpool.

He probably will need time to adjust to a new league, new tactic and teammates. He will work under a world class coach and a well oiled team. He probably will be fine. He will get lots of service from his teammates.

He’s not practically a 100 Euro player though

far from it, that’s your take on the media hype of him being an £85 million signing

he’s not

he’s a £64 million signing, it’s literally in the details

first add on kicks in after 10 games making him a £68 million signing or in euros €78 million

the further add ons could take a year or so too kick in, unless he contributes to us winning trophies, in which case he’ll be worth the extra
 Nice try. You've paid 90 million for a relatively unproven player. Hope he's a big a disappointment

Diaz, Salah, Nunez, Jota, Firminio, and the kid Carvalho are winning us the league this year. Nunez will score goals and have a sudden impact on the team. I think Haaland is going to take a while to settle at City considering Pep isn’t as good as Klopp in having players making immediate impacts and winning three leagues in a row is a tough call so you can just sense Liverpool getting number 20.
