Danny Welbeck to Sunderland (Loan Watch)

I'm not sure he will eventually play most games for us as striker. I think he'd make a better winger/outside forward much like he played for large periods today.

I see him as a Valencia type player - more attacking than a proper midfielder but does come back on defense when needed.

Think he's not suited to be a proper central striker.

He's a year younger than Muller.

Well last year Muller had a lot of games for Bayern's first team and made the World cup. So regardless of being a year older I still think i'm right to say he has progressed at a faster rate?!

He's not suited to being a central stiker without a lead striker ahead of him I would agree, however I don't see him as the similar type of player to Valencia.

Valencia isn't a forward he is more of an orthodox winger who unusually hugs the touch line but has of late started to learn to cut inside more often. you would still however expect him to do his best work getting up and down the flanks and crossing.

Danny looks like its more his natural game to stay a little more central even without the ball and only really cut to the byline to cross when the centre is too occupied. If you think of the the type of position that Henry started in for Arsenal before he was moved more central then you get an idea of the type of player I think Danny will become. You would still expect Danny being the type of player he is to have more contact with the front striker other than crossing(one two and quick interchanges being the most obvious type).

Muller may just be a better player. He's not seemingly gone through the growing pains that Welbeck has, effectively writing off the last season or 2.

I don't actually think he's a better player but i'm just biased with Welbeck!!

I keep reading Welbeck is technically gifted. Which I am struggling to make a decision on. There is something just not right. This is hard to explain, because I haven't really seen anything like it before.
I think his coordination is just off. I haven't seen it before in a player but at times he can do some great touches and dribble amazingly good and then others the ball will just bounce off him. It is carelessness. Clumsyness. Casualness. Inconsistency. This is my problem with Welbeck - and also his average football brain. However, he is a great athlete, with an ability to do the passing finishes as Datura mentioned. Combine this with the inconsistent great skill and touches and there is a good player. I don't think he will make it at United but will probably end up staying in the Premier League. I keep trying to think of a similar player, who will look careless but just as brilliant in the same match, but for now I struggle.

His inconstancy is due to firstly his young age and secondly, him getting used to his body. I've mentioned it before, we won't see the best of Welbeck till he's 21, and he's done finish with growing and get used to his new build.

He resembled a stick when he first broke through into the first team, with most oppositions players finding it easy to push him away. The above is increasingly unlikely to happen as he continues to build on his strength and he'll be a pain to play against in the future for defenders.

Yes but you don't grow during the minutes of a match. He just looses possession far too often. I think it is down to a lack of awareness around him and inconsistent technique.

Yes, he is still growing. But I don't think is a good reason for being inconsistent and giving the ball away so many times. These are down to being not that great a footballer.

 Damn him for being inconsistent at the age of 19.

Great to see Bruce having faith in him. Did well from the bits I saw

Getting better and better. Can he continue like this he will become a hit at Sunderland. btw....I like the spirit of Bruce's team. Titus Bramble impress me and Bent keep on scoring. It's a joy to watch them. First Shitty then Arse. Thank's God for late goals..

After last week it helps somewhat!

We just need to mill these feckers tomorrow and normality will return to the world!!!

He did well. Lets not forget he was playing against Arsenal, so all considered he did fine.

my apartment mates wanted to watch something else, hence i could not watch the game. but some guys on ESPN(South Asia) did say that Welbeck was playing really well. does anyone agree?

He wasn't really in the game but Sunderland had no craft in midfield, they just kept trying to launch it into the box mostly badly.

Today? That would be way over the top. He was quiet but the few times he had the ball at his feet he was fairly neat and tidy. The ball was put in towards him and Bent a lot and he got a flick or two with his head.

I really don't think Sunderland's style suits him. He kept on showing for short passes on the edge of the area and all Sunderland were doing was putting it into the box as early as possible.

I agree.

He seems to be a good option for Sunderland. It's good to see Brucey having faith in him against a big side and he really gave them something different today. This is the first full game I've seen since his move and his touch in tight areas and movement off the ball were impressive. He seems more comfortable in a wide position, as, despite his size, he's not very physical and seems a bit reluctant to compete in the air.

Looking forward to seeing how he progresses.

The style doesn't suit him but - on the plus side - he's being forced to develop the weaker areas of his game. Won a lot of headers today, which is unlike him.

I agree, that's probably quite important in the development of players like him. We saw it with Wilshere last year at Bolton and I think it's something that would also benefit some of our other youngsters, such as Gibson.

This. He has the physical attributes and technical ability to be a complete striker, just need to work on a few key areas and hopefully he'll develop into a player like Henry(with heading ability).

I wouldn't call him young compared to Wellbeck - Gibson is 23 and he's already been loaned out a couple of times the last loan move was to Wolves

I think he's more of an Ashley Young type player. Plays far up the pitch, but drifts to one side. Nippy.

Yeah, Henry played a hell of a lot on the wings until he went to Arsenal, but he was never anything other than a striker. Same thing with Welbeck, as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah I know what you mean, Welbeck for me is a striker all day long but playing wide won't harm him at all and as Pogue mentioned above it will help him develop weaker aspects of his all round game.

You lot are odd. He's a striker and he'll stay a striker, and if he realises his potential he'll be a player similar to Henry.

I'd agree with that. He can play wide, but he's not a winger, and he's not an attacking midfielder - he's a striker. Everything about his game screams that.

he didn't get involved much in the game, due to the way Sunderland were playing but when he showed some very good touches on the ball, keeping the ball in tight situations, beating players on the ball. pretty impressive, can always trouble a defence with this skill, and slowly his physique.
