Danny Welbeck to Sunderland (Loan Watch)

No chance in hell he gets Welbeck. He might get Onuoha, Man City might not care, but Welbeck will be given a chance at United...

He is a clever man. Which is why Welbeck's going nowhere.

Unlike some on here Welbeck's performance today will have been no surprise to Fergie.

Well given we already have plenty of striking options, a keen interest in a Sunderland rising star and a player on loan to them that they want, all im saying is i wouldn't be surprised if we came to some agreement on such a basis.

His improvement game by game has been astronomical(not sure that's correct, how can you improve game by game, yet astronomically? meh..). I've been watching all our loan players, every week, Cleverley and Welbeck specially.

I never jumped on the Frazier Campbell bandwagon, because he just seemed to be a quick player...but Danny is something else. He'll be given every chance to prove himself at United, and if he fails only then will he be sold, or if he pulls a Rossi.

I don't think Fergie will touch Henderson, and even if he does, Welbeck most definitely won't be a makeweight in that deal.

I think that was to give him some confidence at the top level more than actually believing he would make it.

I think that's probably true but you could always tell that - out of all our youngsters - Fergie has had the highest hopes for Welbeck. He won't speak bad of any young player but that was an unusually bullish statement. A real vote of confidence.

Very impressed with Danny today, if he keeps that up he'll make it no problem.

Have the dozey feckers on the mackem forums worked out he's anygood yet?

I've been following their forum pretty regularly since the loan was confirmed. Their change in tune since he's moved up top is quite amusing.

They're currently eating a lot of humble pie.

I'm liking the exciting options we have up front in Macheda and Welbeck...both these youngsters have shown great promise in spells and have had a fantastic weekend.

It is a problem for us though I think...Rooney, Hernandez, Berba, Welbeck and Macheda...looking ahead is that perhaps too many strikers? It doesn't even consider Owen, who we don't know for sure, or at all, if he's going at the end of the season. Fergie knows best and he'll know these youngsters will need games next season so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out.

Which is the point, 5 strikers is great for squad depth but when at most 2 are starting every week it makes it hard to give them all enough game time and unless we're shunting out the likes of Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez etc anytime soon it will be the Welbecks of this world who see little time.

Fergies always said he loves to have 4 good strikers at his disposal at the start of every season, cant see all those being on the books myself.

I'd be very surprised if that wasn't our 5 strikers next season, with Owens contract not renewed at the end of this season, and Diouf sold on.

there is no way fergie is giving up on welbeck anytime soon

I dont think he will be for sale

TBF on pure end product alone it'd be hard to progress much more from that.

Minor Trivia Note (that may not be true): IIRC SAF had him benched in the reserves after that goal for his "arrogant" celebration

That was after his goal away to Derby (another stunning finish btw) and it turned out to be bollocks.

I'm not too bothered if he's pushed out wide when Bent is back. It's all about playing regular Premiership football at this stage.

I told you way back in 2008 that he was talent when you were all pratting on about Drinkwater and Brandy.

Super talent. Some people have been made to look like fools in this thread.

Some of the claims people have made are baffling:
Welbeck is technically reasonable. He can keep the ball relatively well, and can dribble competently. He also has a decent shot on him. But none of these traits stand out - there's no doubt he's a good player, but he doesn't strike me as one who could play at the very top level. The weaker sides of his game include heading - which is bizarre given his physique - passing and vision. I'm sure someone will say that most of his passes hit his target, but they always seem to be the easiest choice, and normally go backwards.

Welbeck's creativity and link up play has always been very impressive, and it's shown throughout his loan spell at Sunderland, even before today.
It's clear you've seen very little of him or perhaps you're just clueless. Who knows?

By far the best i think hes ever played certainly the best ive seen of him, think the commentators were saying the same during the match, i hear Sunderland fans had been turning on him prior to todays game and to be fair from what ive seen previously its understandable he hasnt offered much for them before today to be perfectly honest at least as an attacking threat, i believe that was his first goal or assist for the club all season, not a bad time to get it mind!

I still have serious reservations regarding his finishing and overal end prodcut which is what strikers our mainly judged on, his output for Sunderland has been very poor for a front man so far, he had a couple of gaping chances today and missed both, hes not the sort of player your overly confident is going to score when given great chances, but his overly game outside of the penalty box was excellent, his passing and awareness of Gyan especially really was good, they seem to enjoy playing together.

Yeah, see, a lot of this isn't true. Welbeck was fantastic against Manchester City, at Anfield against Liverpool, and had a superb cameo midweek against Spurs in which he constantly unsettled their defence and managed to set up Gyan.

He's by and large been quite good for Sunderland before today. Today he was exceptional.

Only because of the potential for drinking puns. John Cofie's recently added another variation.

Credit where it's due though, I do remember you talking up Welbeck from his very first couple of appearances.

Peter was also waffling on about Cathcart. Also, I don't think anyone on here was EVER that excited about Drinkwater (or Cleverley for that matter, so shows what we know) but Brandy was probably even more talented than Welbeck at 14/15.

Cathcart was also very good I thought he'd make it above all of them.

I didn't take the Brandy/Drinkwater comment seriously tbh but bearing in mind how rare it is for PS to talk up any United player his comments on Danny really stood out. Compared him to a young Thierry Henry iirc.

Well that contradicts what a lot of Sunderland fans have said about his performances this season.

Welbeck was class today, what also has to be said is how good Sunderland were today too, Chelsea were distroyed today in defence. Sunderland have become the giant killers of this league, I think they are pushing on nicely. Fair play to Bruce.

He was excellent today, always looking to turn his man and make things happen. His control in tight areas was superb and he showed strength and awareness of his team mates for smart link-up play, it took a top drawer save from Chech to prevent his athletic header from giving Sunderland the lead and he worked his socks off; very very promising stuff.

I think the plan is for Rooney, Chicho, Macheda and Welbeck to be our striking quartet sooner rather than later.

I don't see any intention on Fergie's part to get rid of Berbatov.

It's great for Danny to have such a top game in his natural position today because it get's the doubters off his back and it builds his confidence up. It's all nice for anyone who has seen him in the youth and the reserves display his natural qualities over ninety minutes in the PL against the champions.

Nevertheless, there is no reason why when you break down his strengths and qualities as a player that he could develop into a player who can play across the front three either centrally or outwide. He was often used out wide in his youth team days, and this is probably the best chance he has of making it with United. I have always maintained this with Welbeck and sought for patience with him because he has massive talent.

WHen Bent is back to fully fitness Welbeck will be shunted out back wide left or be back on the bench. Bruce has to keep players who will be part of his future happy and he knows Fergie is not going to sell Welbeck so bearing injuries Gyan and Bent will more often not be the pairing for them.

I don't see any intention on Fergie's part to get rid of Berbatov.

I didn't say next season but he has one year left on his contract and will only be offered a years extension. I don't see any reason to not be hopeful that in 2 and half seasons time Welbeck and Macheda will be ready and when that happens a 32 year old Berbatov would not be needed.

Was he as good as being made? Or there is some exaggeration? I am being tempted to go watch the replay.

The entire Sunderland team were very good today and Danny was the best performer for them.

It's worth a watch if you can watch the full 90 minutes.

He was good, particularly the first half. Never used too feel too excited about Welbeck, he always seemed so gangly and rubber-legged, with an overly relaxed demeanour about him on field. (That's not saying he didn't have talent or ability).

Haven't seen him play for Sunderland until today, but have to admit he seems to have come on in leaps and bounds since he's been there. I'd watch the match if I were you.

I only saw the highlights and read the match reports from his game versus Stoke, ditto for tonight's match. But I saw his second half performance against Spurs, and I can tell you that 19 year old strikers have been hailed as the next big thing for much less than what he's done the past couple of weeks. Just take a moment and consider the fact that he's doing it in the Premier League, and he's doing it against top teams while playing for a team that can hardly be classified as one (even though they've been very impressive at times this season).

For me this is the absolute best part of football, watching the youngsters stake their claim to fame, and it's all the more sweeter when it's one of our own, even if the shirt he's doing it in at the moment has a little too much white in it. I think in five years time when he's a regular for us, at the very least, we'll look back at this game and remember it as the one "made" him. A quantum leap towards the absolute highest level I'd say!
