Danny Welbeck to Sunderland (Loan Watch)

He's shown glimpes at United that he can do it. His best game for me was against Everton I think it was (went off injured just after HT) he was brilliant that day and so today everything falls right for him. He's a better 'player' then Kiko and it's a reminder of the strength in depth we have but it's young.

Was certainly immense today, was key in all three goals and did as well as he could with two other chances. Let's see if he can kick on and get more goals now. It'll be interesting to see what Bruce does when Bent's back.

I keep reading Welbeck is technically gifted. Which I am struggling to make a decision on. There is something just not right. This is hard to explain, because I haven't really seen anything like it before.
I think his coordination is just off. I haven't seen it before in a player but at times he can do some great touches and dribble amazingly good and then others the ball will just bounce off him. It is carelessness. Clumsyness. Casualness. Inconsistency. This is my problem with Welbeck - and also his average football brain. However, he is a great athlete, with an ability to do the passing finishes as Datura mentioned. Combine this with the inconsistent great skill and touches and there is a good player. I don't think he will make it at United but will probably end up staying in the Premier League. I keep trying to think of a similar player, who will look careless but just as brilliant in the same match, but for now I struggle.

To be fair to Scholesy I think he is genuinely confused about Welbeck, usually he is quite definitive, definitely not the worst critic in this thread.

Fantastic performance today, and I am not his biggest fan but if he plays like that regular I will have been handed humble pie and we'll have a hell of a player on our hands.

Great to see him adding the goal threat and end product that has been missing until recent weeks. Him and Gyan seem a far more natural partnership and Sunderland importantly played shorter and utilised him far more effectively.

Shame Bruce will stick him back on the bench once Bent is fit....he might continue to play 4-4-2, but it will be with Gyan.

At best he'll squeeze Danny into the lineup by playing him on the wing, where he isn't as influential and alive.

He's said he'll play with one striker even when Bent returns but Gyan's form means you cant really chuck him on the bench now

Thing about Bent is he has always played best as a lone striker, Sunderland played so well with that team today I see no reason why he should walk straight back into the side.

Considering Bent has scored something like 60-80% of their goals since joining I think he would be hard to drop.

They need to find a way to play both Bent and Gyan

By far the best i think hes ever played certainly the best ive seen of him, think the commentators were saying the same during the match, i hear Sunderland fans had been turning on him prior to todays game and to be fair from what ive seen previously its understandable he hasnt offered much for them before today to be perfectly honest at least as an attacking threat, i believe that was his first goal or assist for the club all season, not a bad time to get it mind!

I still have serious reservations regarding his finishing and overal end prodcut which is what strikers our mainly judged on, his output for Sunderland has been very poor for a front man so far, he had a couple of gaping chances today and missed both, hes not the sort of player your overly confident is going to score when given great chances, but his overly game outside of the penalty box was excellent, his passing and awareness of Gyan especially really was good, they seem to enjoy playing together.

He'll probably be put back out wide which is a shame since he can do well up front, but Bent certainly has seniority and his goalscoring record to move him up the pecking order, and Gyan's a record signing and is scoring freely right now. Can't see Gyan and Bent doing well together to be honest, but we'll see. Danny's making the most of Bent being out, which is the main thing. He's there for experience and he's doing well. Potentially outstanding player.

Anyone who's watched him over the years, even in the United first team, will tell you he's a fantastic finisher. The boy has everything, we should all be very very excited, he is the true real deal.

Surely his output this season has suffered on account of him getting stuck out wide?

Was he really that good? I didn't watch the game :)

Yup on both counts.

he had a couple of gaping chances today and missed both

Pretty much did all he could with the header and forced Cech into a great save, and was on his left foot with the second. Can't really fault him at all for the first, second one wasn't easy.

If we can get him back to United, will give us a total new option than the usual shite we get off the predicatble Berbatov

Hes in the team as an attacking player, inside left with a license to get central appears to have been his role under bruce, either way 1 goal in 13 appearances isn't the best output to be honest, which was my point.

People saying hes an excellent finisher, ive not seen that yet maybe he is although his record wouldn't suggest it and he didn't look a natural today when given the chances which i think it was Andy Gray who made reference to, compare it with Gyan who went through on goal and he just looked a finisher, i wouldn't say Welbeck looks a finisher at the moment, he may be better at reserve level in that sense though.

It wasn't his penalty box play that impressed me though as i say it was the stuff he mainly did outside that impressed me, a general awareness of whos around and his link up play was really refreshing today.

Still more of the same is needed, and he will need to improve his productivity if hes ever to be a regular force for us.

Yup.

His finishing has always been one of his greatest strengths too. Now he's playing centrally he'll get more chances and the goals will follow.

I think the fact that he hadnt scored before today was probably getting to him a bit aswell because hes had some chances this season where he would have normally tried to chip the keeper or tried to curl it round him but he has been concentrating on just keeping the shot hard and low but hopefully now hes got his first goal it will free him up a bit and he will be more natural bacause when confident and on form hes capable of some exceptional finishes

His header was perfect....met it beautifully and directed downwards...Cech made a very good save. His other shot was on his wrong foot if I recall. I'm not saying he's as deadly as Ruud atm, or ever will be, but Welbeck knows how to find the back of the net.

Obviously at 19, and having not scored, he is a bit anxious, and might be even down on confidence...but he's not. You watch him play, and you can tell...he's a calm, and confident young player, who knows the ability he possesses.

Allforone in doubting Welbeck shocker.

His finishing itself has always had a touch of class about it, needs more consistency but he's been capable of the sublime pass into corner types from his academy days.

Great to see a player whom you've watched since they were 16 playing in academy through to reserves develop. I hope some twats realise that some know him more than themselves.

Not his biggest fan? Are you kidding me?

You said you thought he was nowhere near good enough and hated him!

He has scored some belters for us over the past year or two. Really can't doubt his finishing at this young age.

I don't understand why a lot of posters don't seem to rate Welbeck. I think he's always look a good prospect, and today he really showed what kind of a player he could become. Of course there are aspects to his game that need improvement, but he's got all the raw materials there. He needs to bulk up just a little bit and I think his pace and power will make him a real handful for most defenders. I'm going out on a limb, but I reckon he'll be in the England squad for Euro 2012.

He's still a million miles off being a first team regular at United to be fair

He's 19 years old. It's the "never" in that sentence which is retarded.

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it but his second best game for Sunderland was against Liverpool. Always a good sign when a young player raises his game against the big teams.

He was good against City too and apparently had a good impact against Spurs also.

Am I wrong in saying he also had a very good game against City?
