Beating Liverpool for their top target.

I'll have no problems with that at all. Young, cheap and English and will be happy here as a backup.

For people who don't want to give that rag hits (which in all likelihood is what this article is trying to do):

Manchester United have become favourites to sign Danny Ings after holding talks with Burnley about a summer deal.

Liverpool maintain an interest in the player and were prepared to exploit a Premier League loophole to guarantee a transfer in the summer. But Louis Van Gaal is attempting to use the same method to trump their rivals and secure the services of the 22-year-old.

Ings has scored nine goals so far in his first season in the Premier League and United consider him to be a future England international forward.

Van Gaal was particularly impressed by Ings’ performance against United at Old Trafford in February when he scored in Burnley’s 3-1 defeat.

Ings has become one of the most sought-after strikers in Europe and United are keen to ensure that they win the race for his signature. Real Sociedad, Tottenham and Manchester City are all interested in the player, but Sportsmail understands that United have opened dialogue with Burnley to hurry through a move.

The player is out of contract in the summer and due to his age Burnley would be set to receive around £5million in compensation if he moved to a domestic club.

But, under Premier League Rule U8, an English team can agree a fee and sign a pre-contract with Ings and the club which guarantees a transfer in the summer.

Liverpool wanted to sign Ings in the January transfer window and loan him back to Burnley, but were prevented doing so by Premier League regulations.

Burnley were adamant they wanted to hold on to the forward until the end of the season in the hope he would help keep them up and the club are still in with a chance of staying in the top flight.

If Ings takes up the Chicharito/Falcao backup role then I don't think it'd be such a bad move. Obviously not the quality we'd all hope for, but with the number of games we could potentially have next season we'll need a number of attacking options.

If Van Gaal plans to stick with 4-3-3 and have Rooney as his first choice #9 this move makes sense.

Pointless buying someone like Cavani, whose price tag alone would demand he have a good run to establish himself up front, which would force Van Gaal to change the team shape and Rooney's role in it again.

What we need is someone who can play the lone striker role on those nights when Rooney needs a rest and get a good goal return. Ings probably wouldn't be my first choice for but I can see the logic in going for someone like him. Good player, room to grow, will accept playing second fiddle to an established name like Rooney.

I guess if he's happy to be back to Rooney, which I think he will (he'll have to be lol), then fair enough. But if we get rid of RVP to have Ings, for example, I worry if Rooney gets injured.

Us being after him has been an open secret for quite a while now. Not convinced he'd be anything more than a squad player, but if we lose Falcao, Hernandez and possible RvP, we'd need a couple more strikers, even allowing for the one up front system.

I wouldn't worry.I mean let's be honest RVP will regress even more next season while Ings still only 22.He can also play as a second striker which sometimes LVG will love to have.

Cannot get excited about this transfer. It's not like we're man city and need to fill our English contingent. Would much rather have gone for some of the other exciting young strikers we were being linked with.

I 100% believe this lad will lead our charge to the title next season.

Will be just like the season Van Persie signed.

You'd be confident with Ings leading the line for a number of games if Rooney was out?

You'd be confident with Ings leading the line for a number of games if Rooney was out?

Yes.More confident than the 32 years old Robin Van Persie for sure.Or obviously the current Ramadel Falcao.

People don't rate Ings just because he's English, plays in a relegation zone team and has a boring name.

He's actually a very good player. I'd have no issue with him in the squad.

You'd be confident with Ings leading the line for a number of games if Rooney was out?

I don't see how anyone could be, he has 1 season and 9 top flight goals under his belt, he's proven nothing, if we waste our time with him it should be as 3rd choice not 2nd behind Rooney.

There's something in this. For the touted cost it's a low-risk, high-reward kind of transfer.

I see we've reached the "You only don't want him because he's English and plays for a shite club" cliche early in this thread. How about Burnley have been on the TV plenty for us to see and he's a very average player? As for exotic names, I better go and cross that John Stones off my muppet wishlist.....

More confident with Danny Ings leading the line then Van Persie?

Christ almighty.

If he comes here, it has to be as 3rd choice. If not I'd rather keep HernandeZ. In fact the only benefit of Ings over Hernandez is the fact he's English.

People need to calm down. This transfer makes sense in every aspect. Cheap, young and absolutely no risk for us as a squad player. Even if we sell him in 2 or 3 years, we will make a profit. I d rather Ings on the bench than a striker we bought for 30m. If RvP goes, there will be another one i guess.

Dybala has 13 in a shite league,Vietto has 12 and both would cost around 30 mil.

Would he really be cheaper than the likes of dabyala who everyone raves about? He is English and a regular for the u21s after all, and other English clubs also want him.

Fair enough. That's your opinion. I wouldn't say I don't rate him for the reasons you pointed out, though. I mean, I love young English talent at the club, I just think he lacks experience, and well, he plays in a 442 system for Burnley, where he has a striker to play off. How good would he be up top on his own? Guess only time would tell if this move was to materialize.

In all seriousness, it shows the tact I expected from LvG. He isn't stupid enough to spunk 50m on Cavani. We are playing a one striker system, and Ings will probably be fine with earning a decent amount playing a sizable chunk of games. I'd personally prefer someone more flexible in position and capable of making things happen alone, such as Vietto or Dybala. The obvious issue there is cost, of course.

He's out of contract at the end of the season. Some kind of tribunal will take place and Burnley will receive a small fee. Half a Bebe for a young, English striker that has a little bit about him? It can't hurt.

Absolutely. I can't see him being relied on as second choice, but he'd still get games as RvP will inevitably get injured/need rest. A much better fit than Falcao in that respect.

Wrong move for him.
That I can agree with.

Out of contract and will cost 5m at max!

Cheers. And to the others for the responses.

So, any good then?

I'm all for getting rid of Falcao and rvp this summer and getting one or two younger mobile strikers in.

I agree, but even then, I think I'd prefer Wilson as third choice, as I think Ings would stop him from progressing.

Obviously Dybala would be far too expensive, something around 30m (rumoured). Vietto i thought had a cheap buyout clause? If that is true, we should be all over him. With Depay coming in, Dybala would be a bit of a waste, where would he play? He isnt an out and out striker, on the wings is a massive fight for a spot. So Ings would be a good option, especially if we want to invest in other areas heavily.

I agree, I really see zero need to scrape the barrel like this, people citing cheapness and sell on value but that's not how we operate as a rule.
